In October 2026, an AI interview assistant is one of two different products: software that helps a job candidate practice and answer interview questions, or software that helps an employer run, record and score interviews. This report on the state of AI interview assistants in 2026 covers what the term means, how the tools work, how many candidates use them, what they cost, what changed this year and where to read further in our 49-guide research library.
The short version: most candidate-side tools are desktop or web apps that cost about $15 to $150 a month when you pay month to month (as of October 2026). In a 2026 survey, more than one in five U.S. job seekers said they had used AI in real time during a live interview. Practice is still the one use no employer objects to. We make CoPilot Interview, a desktop AI interview assistant for Windows and Mac, so read our view with that in mind.
What does "AI interview assistant" mean in 2026?
Search for the term and roughly half the results are written for recruiters, not candidates. The same words describe both sides of the table:
| Candidate side | Interviewer side | |
|---|---|---|
| Works for | The job seeker | The employer or hiring team |
| Main jobs | Mock interviews, answer structure, feedback, and live suggestions where the employer allows them | Question generation, notes, transcripts and scorecards |
| Who pays | An individual, usually month to month | A company, usually per seat or by quote |
| Examples | CoPilot Interview, Final Round AI, LockedIn AI, Verve AI; Yoodli for delivery practice | HireVue, Metaview, BrightHire, BarRaiser; CoPilot Interview's Interviewer Mode |
On the candidate side, people also say AI interview copilot, AI interview helper or interview AI app. The names overlap almost completely; our guide to the difference between an assistant, a copilot and a helper sorts them out. CoPilot Interview works on both sides: Candidate Mode and Mock Interview for job seekers, and Interviewer Mode for hiring managers. It is not affiliated with Microsoft Copilot or GitHub Copilot.
How does the technology work?
Almost every candidate-side tool runs the same pipeline. Audio from the call, or your spoken practice answer, goes to a speech-to-text model that produces captions while the person is still talking. When the question ends, the text goes to a large language model with instructions about format, and sometimes with your résumé and the job description. The reply comes back as bullet points, a STAR outline, code or, in practice mode, a score with what to fix.
Speed depends on both models and on the network. In CoPilot Interview, a structured answer appears in about 2 seconds after the question ends. Our guide to the models behind these tools goes deeper, and the history of the category shows how open speech recognition and chat models made candidate tools practical in 2022 and 2023.
How many job seekers use AI in interviews?
Published surveys ask different questions, so read each number with its own wording. These are the figures we could open at the source in October 2026:
- 22% of U.S. job seekers said they use AI to answer job interview questions, and 34% use it to prepare for interviews, in the Resume Genius 2026 Job Seeker Insights Report. The same report says more than 1 in 5 job seekers have used AI in real time during a live interview. It surveyed 1,000 U.S. job seekers through Pollfish, starting March 16, 2026, and was published April 8, 2026.
- 39% of candidates used AI during the application process, mostly for résumé and cover letter text (3,290 candidates, fourth quarter of 2024), and only 26% trust AI to evaluate them fairly (2,918 candidates, first quarter of 2025), according to a Gartner press release of July 31, 2025.
Resume Genius sells job-search products, so its numbers describe its own respondents. For employer adoption, AI-led interviews and the laws that apply, see our AI in hiring statistics for 2026. Prices, platforms and privacy in October 2026
Disclosure: we make CoPilot Interview. Competitor details come from each vendor's own site, checked in October 2026.
| Question | What we found | CoPilot Interview |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | Most interview-specific tools charge about $15 to $150 a month month to month; quarterly or annual billing cuts that sharply | Standard $14.99/mo on sale (regular $19.99); Pro $29.99/mo; Pro+ $49.99/mo; Pro Annual $199.99/year |
| Free plans | From prep-only plans with no live help to credits or short sessions: Interviews.chat gives 30 free credits, Verve AI 3 copilot sessions of 15 minutes a month | 15 minutes a day, sessions up to 15 minutes, all four modes, no account or card |
| Platforms | Desktop apps for Windows and macOS are the norm for live help; many vendors add a web app, a Chrome extension or a mobile browser version; native phone apps are rarer (LockedIn AI and Hedy list them) | Windows 10+ and macOS 12+; Android companion in beta; browser mock interview with nothing to install |
| Call apps | Desktop tools listen to your computer's audio, so "works with Zoom" usually means audio capture, not an official integration | Runs in its own window beside Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet |
| Model choice | Now common: LockedIn AI, Verve AI, Parakeet AI and Interviews.chat publish model pickers | 9 AI models; ChatGPT and Gemini models on Pro, plus Claude on Pro+; Dual AI Mode shows two answers side by side |
| Privacy | Audio usually goes to a cloud speech-to-text model; retention and training terms differ by vendor | Audio is streamed in short encrypted segments to a speech-to-text model and the question text goes to the AI model you chose; nothing is kept on our servers beyond the request; session files stay in your Documents folder |
The feature-by-feature detail is in the 12-tool feature comparison, the Zoom, Teams and Google Meet compatibility matrix and the privacy policies compared. For our own picks with prices, see the best AI interview assistants compared.
What changed for AI interview assistants in 2026?
- A free practice tool disappeared. Google retired Interview Warmup in April 2026; our Interview Warmup alternatives page covers what replaced it.
- Some employers now name rounds where AI is allowed. Meta's AI-enabled coding round, reported since October 2025, uses an assistant Meta builds into the environment (our guide), and Amazon said in January 2026 that its software engineer assessments now include an interactive AI assistant. Most companies still bar outside AI in live interviews; our sourced list of company AI policies has the wording.
- Meeting assistants moved into interviews. General tools such as Cluely and Hedy, which has a "Job Interview (Candidate)" session type, now compete with interview-only products.
- Model choice became standard. In 2026 several vendors let you pick the model per session or per question, which used to be rare.
- Regulation dates moved. The EU's Digital Omnibus moved high-risk duties for recruitment AI to December 2, 2027, and Illinois's law on AI in employment decisions took effect January 1, 2026. These rules cover employers' hiring tools, not a candidate's practice app.
Where the category goes next is in the future of AI interview assistants.
Practice it
The use every employer accepts is rehearsal, and it is also where you improve fastest. In CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview you add your résumé and the job description, choose the level, 3, 5 or 8 questions and the mix of behavioral, technical, system design and coding. Each question is read aloud, you answer out loud, and every answer is scored out of 10 with what worked, what to fix and a model answer, then a report card. The browser AI mock interview has 113 real questions across 9 tracks with nothing to install.
If you also use live help, follow the rules of the employer or platform you're interviewing with — many people use it only to practice, which works on the free plan. Never use an assistant during an assessment or an AI-interviewer session; take those yourself. Our 7-day practice plan shows a full routine, and CoPilot Interview's product page shows the live and mock modes.

What is an AI interview assistant?
It is software that helps a job candidate prepare for and get through interviews. It uses speech-to-text and a large language model to run practice interviews, suggest structured answers and give feedback. Recruiters also use the term for interviewer-side tools that take notes, write transcripts and score answers.
How many job seekers use AI during interviews in 2026?
In the Resume Genius 2026 Job Seeker Insights Report, a survey of 1,000 U.S. job seekers published April 8, 2026, 22% said they use AI to answer job interview questions, 34% use it to prepare for interviews, and more than 1 in 5 said they had used AI in real time during a live interview. Other surveys ask different questions, so their numbers differ.
How much do AI interview assistants cost in 2026?
As of October 2026, most interview-specific tools charge about $15 to $150 a month when paid month to month, with large discounts for quarterly or annual billing. CoPilot Interview has a free plan with 15 minutes a day, and paid plans start with Standard at $14.99 a month on sale (regular $19.99).
Is it allowed to use AI help in a job interview?
Practicing with one is up to you. Using one during a real interview depends on the employer: a few name rounds where AI is allowed, and most do not allow outside AI in live interviews. Follow the rules of the employer or platform you're interviewing with, and take assessments and AI-interviewer sessions yourself.
What changed for AI interview tools in 2026?
Google retired Interview Warmup in April 2026, some employers began naming rounds where their own AI assistant is provided, general meeting assistants added interview features, model choice became common, and EU high-risk duties for recruitment AI were moved to December 2, 2027.
Which AI interview tool is best in 2026?
Our pick is CoPilot Interview: a free plan with 15 minutes every day, scored mock interviews built from your résumé and the job description, a choice of 9 AI models and an Interviewer Mode, from $14.99 a month. We make it, so weigh that. Its limits: it is desktop only (Windows and macOS), the Android companion is a beta, there is no human coach, and the free plan is 15 minutes a day.
