The history of AI interview assistants starts on the employer's side of the table: video-interview platforms were analyzing recorded interviews with AI years before candidates had tools of their own. The candidate-side AI interview assistant became practical in late 2022 and early 2023, when OpenAI released the Whisper speech-recognition model, ChatGPT and then paid APIs for both. By 2026 the category includes scored mock-interview apps, live copilots and interview rounds where the employer supplies the AI itself.

Before 2022: AI sat on the employer's side
For most of the last decade, "AI in interviews" meant software that companies used on candidates. One-way video platforms recorded answers and scored them, and the debate was about what those scores measured. HireVue's January 2021 post is the clearest marker of where that debate went: the company said its research found visual analysis added little once language analysis improved, so it removed visual analysis from new assessment models. Our guide to how the HireVue AI interview works covers the format candidates meet today.
On the candidate side, help was mostly static: question banks, books, courses and human mock interviews. Interview-intelligence tools such as BrightHire, founded in 2019, recorded and summarized interviews for hiring teams, while early practice apps such as Yoodli and Huru coached delivery, not content.
2022 to 2024: how did candidate-side assistants become possible?
Three releases in six months changed what a small team could build. Google's Interview Warmup showed that browser speech-to-text was good enough for practice: you answered aloud and read your words back, though answers weren't graded. Whisper made accurate transcription freely available in September 2022, and ChatGPT, in November 2022, showed a model that could follow a conversation and produce a structured answer.
The March 2023 APIs turned that into a product recipe. An AI interview assistant is mostly two paid services in sequence: speech-to-text to caption the question, then a language model to draft a structured answer or score yours. At $0.006 a minute, transcribing an hour of audio cost about 36 cents. Products split into two kinds that still define the category:
- Practice tools that run spoken mock interviews and give feedback, the descendants of Interview Warmup with a language model added.
- Live copilots that listen to a call and show suggestions. "AI interview copilot" became a common name for them; the word stresses that you stay in charge.
The trade-offs those early tools faced are still the ones buyers test today: how fast the answer appears, whether a browser extension can hear a desktop call app, and how much context the tool has about you. Our explainer on what an AI interview assistant is describes the types that came out of this period.
2025: how did employers respond to candidates using AI?
By 2025, candidate AI use was large enough to measure. Gartner reported in July 2025 that 39% of candidates had used AI in their applications, mostly for résumés and cover letters, while only 26% trusted AI to evaluate them fairly. Employers answered with written rules rather than one industry position:
- Explicit bans for live rounds. Anthropic's July 2025 guidance says live interviews are without AI unless the company says otherwise, and the careers pages of Google, Microsoft and IBM carry similar rules today.
- Rounds that expect AI. Canva described an AI-assisted coding interview in June 2025, and Meta began testing a coding round with its own built-in assistant.
- Disclosure rules. GitLab and Deliveroo allow AI on take-home work if you say how you used it.
Our list of companies that allow AI in interviews links each policy to the employer's own page. The pattern that emerged is the one that still holds: preparation with AI is broadly accepted, and live use depends on the employer and the round.
2026: AI-allowed rounds, a retirement and new deadlines
Three things defined 2026. First, AI-allowed formats spread: Meta's AI-enabled coding round became a reported part of its loop, and Amazon said in January 2026 that its software engineer assessments include an interactive AI assistant. In both cases the employer supplies the AI inside its own environment. Second, Google retired Interview Warmup in April 2026, leaving the free practice space to newer tools. Third, regulators adjusted their timelines: the EU moved high-risk duties for recruitment AI to December 2, 2027.
The products themselves converged. Model choice, once rare, became a standard feature, and general meeting assistants added interview modes. The current state of play, with sourced usage data and prices, is in the state of AI interview assistants in 2026; what may come next is in the future of AI interview assistants.
Where does CoPilot Interview fit in this history?
CoPilot Interview is made by NeuraSense AI LLC, founded in 2025, and the latest desktop version listed on our press page is 1.3.16 (October 2026). It belongs to the post-2023 generation: a desktop app for Windows 10+ and macOS 12+ that combines both product types from the period above. Mock Interview builds questions from your résumé and the job description and scores each spoken answer out of 10, and Candidate Mode shows live captions and then a structured answer in about 2 seconds after the question ends. Interviewer Mode serves the employer side, and the Resume Builder tailors your résumé to a job URL. See the current CoPilot Interview AI interview assistant for each mode.
We make CoPilot Interview, so read this section with that in mind. Its limits: it is desktop only, the Android companion is a beta, there is no human coach and the free plan is 15 minutes a day. It is not affiliated with Microsoft Copilot or GitHub Copilot.
Practice it
The lesson of the last five years is that practice is the use nobody disputes. Run a scored mock interview built from the job you want, answer out loud, fix the weakest answer and run it again. The free browser AI mock interview has 113 real questions across 9 tracks with nothing to install. If you use live help, follow the rules of the employer or platform you're interviewing with — many people use it only to practice, which works on the free plan. Take assessments and AI-interviewer sessions yourself.
Practice with a current-generation assistant
CoPilot Interview's free plan gives you 15 minutes every day across all four modes, including Mock Interview scored out of 10, with no account and no credit card.

When were AI interview assistants invented?
Employer-side AI interview tools came first: HireVue was already analyzing recorded interviews with AI before it removed visual analysis in early 2020. Candidate-side assistants became practical after OpenAI released Whisper in September 2022, ChatGPT in November 2022 and paid APIs for both on March 1, 2023, which let developers connect speech-to-text and a language model cheaply.
What was the first AI interview practice tool?
We can't verify which was first. Google's Interview Warmup, introduced in 2022, was the best-known free one: it transcribed spoken answers in real time but did not grade them. Google retired it in April 2026. Practice apps such as Huru, whose iOS app arrived in December 2021, existed earlier.
Did HireVue stop using facial analysis?
Yes. In a January 12, 2021 post, HireVue said it had removed visual analysis from its new assessment models, a decision made in early 2020, because its research found visual analysis added little once language analysis improved.
When did companies start allowing AI in interviews?
Published examples start in 2025: Canva described an AI-assisted coding interview in June 2025, Meta confirmed in July 2025 that it was testing AI tools for applicants, and Amazon said in January 2026 that its software engineer assessments include an interactive AI assistant. In each case the employer provides the AI.
Is an AI interview copilot the same as an AI interview assistant?
In practice, yes. Both names describe candidate-side software that helps you practice and structure answers; "copilot" stresses that you stay in charge. Recruiter tools sometimes use the same names, so check which side a product serves.
