For ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for interview prep, all three can turn a job description into likely questions, tighten a STAR story and run a spoken mock interview, so choose on documented features: where voice works, how much you can upload and what the free plan allows. None of them scores your answers the same way twice unless you write the rubric, which is the gap a dedicated AI interview assistant fills.
Below are those features side by side, taken from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google help and pricing pages in October 2026, then five prep tasks, a 30-minute test you can run yourself and a simple routine. We didn't run a scored head-to-head, so this page reports what each company documents, not test results. For the wider market, see the state of AI interview assistants in 2026.
We make CoPilot Interview, and its paid plans use ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude models. CoPilot Interview is not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft Copilot or GitHub Copilot.

Which is best for each interview prep task?
Most prep work is reading and writing, which all three do well. The differences show up in voice, saved context and research. Here is where each documented feature matters.
| Prep task | Feature that matters | What the docs point to |
|---|---|---|
| Questions from a job description | Pasting or uploading the posting and your résumé | A résumé and one posting fit easily in any of the three. Context length only matters when you paste several postings and notes at once. |
| Mock behavioral round | Voice, turn-taking and a transcript afterwards | ChatGPT Voice on web or phone; Claude voice mode on desktop, web or phone, with push-to-talk; Gemini Live on your phone, with Hold for thinking time. |
| STAR story rewrite | Standing instructions and your story bank kept between chats | All three rewrite well. Claude Projects and Gemini Gems hold standing instructions; in ChatGPT, keep your story bank in a file you upload. |
| Coding explanation | Explaining code and, ideally, running it | ChatGPT lists data analysis on Free, Claude's Free plan lists running code, and Gemini's free plan lists Canvas. Run any code yourself before you trust it. |
| Company research | Web search with links you can check | ChatGPT and Claude include web search on Free; Gemini lists Deep Research on its free plan. Confirm every claim on the company's own site. |
If you want ready-made prompts for one tool, use our ChatGPT mock interview prompts, Claude prompts for interview practice or the Gemini Live practice guide.
Which has the best voice mode for mock interviews?
Voice is where a mock interview feels real, and it's also where the three differ most. The biggest practical problem is the AI cutting in while you pause to think, so look at how each one handles turn-taking.
- ChatGPT Voice. Works on the web and in the iOS and Android apps. OpenAI says its Live option can listen and speak at the same time, so you can interrupt naturally, and suggests asking it to wait, for example "Wait until I ask you to respond." A transcript is added to the chat afterwards. On Free, Live voice use is limited and measured over a rolling 24 hours.
- Claude voice mode. A beta on every plan, on mobile, desktop and web. Hands-free mode replies at natural pauses; push-to-talk listens only while you hold a button, which suits long behavioral answers. Transcripts are saved, voice counts toward your usage limits, and Anthropic lists interview practice as a use.
- Gemini Live. In the free plan, in the Gemini phone apps only. Hold turns your mic off while you think, captions show what's said, and you can switch between voice and text in the same chat. Tap End to get the transcript.
So: at a desk, ChatGPT and Claude both run in a browser; on a phone, all three work. Push-to-talk and Hold are the most direct fixes for interruptions. Whichever you use, wear headphones and keep your interviewer instructions in a note you can paste in. Our guide to ChatGPT voice mode for interview practice covers the setup in detail.
How to test ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini yourself in 30 minutes
Your résumé, your stories and your target role decide which tool helps you most, so run the same test in all three rather than trusting anyone's ranking, ours included.
- Use identical inputs. The same job description, the same résumé and the same three rough stories in each tool.
- Run the same prompts. Use the examples below, word for word.
- Score each output yourself, 1 to 5, on four points: relevance to the posting, use of your real details, depth of follow-up questions and accuracy. Check every fact and every number it adds.
- Do one spoken round in each. Note who interrupted you, who let you finish and whether the transcript matched what you said.
- Keep two tools at most: one for drafting and research, one for spoken practice.
Example prompts we wrote for this test:
- Questions: "Here are the job description and my résumé. List the 10 questions this interviewer is most likely to ask, grouped as behavioral, technical and role-specific. For each, quote the line of the posting it comes from."
- Behavioral mock (voice): "Interview me out loud for [role]. Ask one question at a time, in under 25 words. Wait until I say 'done'. After each answer, ask one follow-up about what I personally did. Hold all feedback until I say 'review'."
- STAR rewrite: "Rewrite this story in STAR form in under 150 words. Keep my facts and don't add numbers I didn't give you. Then list the two questions an interviewer would ask next."
- Coding explanation: "Explain this solution the way I'd say it in an interview: approach first, then time and space complexity, then one edge case. Point out anything in my code that's wrong."
- Company research: "Using web sources from the last 12 months, summarize what [company] says about [team or product]. Link every claim, then suggest three questions I could ask the interviewer."
Where an AI interview assistant adds value over a chatbot
A general chatbot is a blank page: you write the interviewer, the rules, the rubric and the stopping point, every time. That flexibility is great for drafting and research. It's weaker for repetition, because the questions, the pace and the scoring drift with each prompt you write.
CoPilot Interview's desktop AI interview assistant takes the setup off your plate:
- A mock built for one job. Paste your résumé and the job description, then choose the level, 3, 5 or 8 questions, the mix (behavioral, technical, system design, coding), your coding language and an optional focus.
- Timed, spoken practice. Each question is read aloud and you answer out loud. Coding questions never auto-submit, so you can think in silence.
- The same scoring every round. Each answer gets a score out of 10, what worked, what to fix and a model answer, then a report card, so you can see whether a fix held.
- A browser option. The free AI mock interview runs in your browser with 113 real questions across 9 tracks and nothing to install.
Honest limits: the full app is desktop only (Windows 10+ and macOS 12+), the Android companion is a beta, there's no human coach, the free plan is 15 minutes a day, and AI feedback can be wrong. Paid plans let you pick the model family: Pro uses ChatGPT and Gemini models and Pro+ adds Claude, and Dual AI Mode shows two models' answers side by side.
Practice it: a chatbot for drafting, a scored mock for rehearsal
- Day 1, chatbot: run the question prompt above and draft STAR outlines for your four strongest stories. The free STAR story builder works too.
- Day 2, scored mock: a 5-question Mock Interview with the same résumé and posting. Note your two lowest scores.
- Day 3, chatbot: paste one weak answer and its "what to fix" note, and ask for three ways to tighten it. Pick one and say it in your own words.
- Day 4, chatbot voice: ask for a skeptical interviewer who pushes on follow-ups.
- Day 5, scored mock: rerun the round and compare report cards.

Which is better for interview prep: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
It depends on the task. All three draft and rewrite answers well. For spoken practice at a desk, ChatGPT and Claude both offer voice in the browser; Gemini Live runs in the phone apps. For research, ChatGPT and Claude include web search on their free plans and Gemini lists Deep Research. Run the same prompts in each and keep the one that uses your real details best.
Can I do a free mock interview with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
Yes. As of October 2026, ChatGPT's Free plan includes limited voice use, Claude's voice mode is a beta on every plan including Free, and Gemini Live is listed in Google's free plan. Each has usage limits, so long voice sessions can run out.
Which one can keep my résumé and stories between chats?
Claude's Free plan includes up to 5 Projects, which hold files and standing instructions, and Google lists Gems on Gemini's free plan. ChatGPT's free tier includes a 500 MB Library for uploaded files, but new GPT creation isn't available on personal accounts.
Do ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini score interview answers?
Only if you ask and give them a rubric, and the scores depend on your instructions, so they can shift between sessions. Treat a chatbot score as a prompt for revision, not a measurement.
Is a dedicated AI interview assistant better than a chatbot?
For timed spoken practice with the same scoring every round, yes. CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview builds questions from your résumé and the job description, reads them aloud and scores each answer out of 10. For research and open-ended drafting, a general chatbot is the better tool, and many people use both.
Does CoPilot Interview use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?
Its paid plans do. The Free and Standard plans use fast free models, Pro uses ChatGPT and Gemini models, and Pro+ adds Claude. CoPilot Interview is not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Microsoft Copilot.
