ChatGPT Voice Mode Interview Practice: Setup, Prompts and Limits

Build a ChatGPT project for one job, run spoken mock rounds with 10 voice-ready prompts, then score the transcript and track your weakest answer.

To practice interviews with ChatGPT voice mode, create a ChatGPT project that holds your résumé, the job description and your interviewer instructions, start a chat in it, then select the Voice icon and answer each question out loud. Voice runs inside the chat, so a transcript is waiting there for scoring when you finish. As of October 2026, Free accounts get limited voice access, and Go and Plus get 3 hours in any rolling 24-hour period.

This page covers spoken practice. For typed prompts across behavioral, coding, system design, case and salary rounds, see our ChatGPT mock interview prompts.

ChatGPT Voice as of October 2026: options, devices and limits

These details come from OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice help article, checked in October 2026.

ChatGPT planLive voice in chats, per rolling 24 hours (October 2026)
FreeLimited access; OpenAI says limits may change
Go3 hours
Plus3 hours
Pro ($100/month)15 hours
Pro ($200/month)Unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails

A focused mock round takes 20 to 40 minutes, so Go or Plus covers several rounds a day. On Free, keep voice rounds short and do your review by typing.

Set up a voice mock interview in ChatGPT

  1. Create a project. Select New project in the sidebar and name it after the job, such as "Interview prep: [company]". OpenAI's projects help article says projects hold files such as PDFs and docs, and that you can use voice inside them.
  2. Add your résumé and the job description as project files, or paste them as text.
  3. Add interviewer instructions. Open the project's more options menu, select Project settings and paste prompt 1 below. Project instructions apply only inside that project and override your global custom instructions.
  4. Pick a voice and language under Settings, then Voice. Choosing the language you speak most often helps ChatGPT understand you.
  5. Start a new chat in the project and select Voice. Allow microphone access if asked, and wear headphones.
  6. End with the exit control, then type the review prompt (prompt 10) in the same chat.
Tip: OpenAI's help page says you can ask Live to wait until you're ready for a response, for example "Wait until I ask you to respond." Put a rule like that in your instructions so ChatGPT doesn't jump in while you think. Long pauses or background noise can still trigger a reply; on iPhone, OpenAI suggests turning on Voice Isolation under Mic Mode in Control Center.

10 ChatGPT voice prompts for interview practice

These are example prompts we wrote for this guide. Replace anything in [square brackets]. They're written for listening rather than reading: short questions, nothing read out as a list, and a clear signal for when your answer ends.

1. Project instructions (paste once into Project settings)

In this project you are my interviewer for the [job title] role at [company]. Use my résumé and the job description in the project files. In every voice chat: ask one question at a time, in one or two short sentences. Wait until I say "over" before you respond, even if I pause. Never read out lists or headings. Don't suggest an answer unless I say "show me." After each answer, ask one follow-up that a real interviewer would ask. Save all feedback until I say "feedback."

2. Behavioral round with a wait signal

Start a 20-minute behavioral round. Ask four questions based on the skills this job description stresses most. After each answer, ask one follow-up about what I did personally. Don't comment on my answers until the round ends; then give me one strength and one fix per answer, in plain sentences.

3. A two-person panel

Simulate a panel with two interviewers: Dana, the hiring manager, who asks about impact and priorities, and Sam, a senior teammate, who asks how things actually worked. Say each name before they speak and alternate for six questions. At the end, tell me which interviewer I connected with less, and why.

Panels reward answers that address everyone in the room. See what a panel interview is for the format.

4. Walk through your résumé

Ask me to walk you through my résumé. Each time I finish a role and say "over," ask why I moved on and what I'm proudest of there. At the end, tell me whether my story had a clear direction and which transition sounded weakest.

Our guide to the walk me through your résumé question shows a structure that keeps this under three minutes.

5. Practice in another language

Run this round in [language]. Ask me three common interview questions for this role in [language], one at a time. After each answer, repeat any phrase that sounded unnatural, give me a more natural version in [language], then continue.

OpenAI says you can ask ChatGPT to speak a different language during a voice conversation, which helps if your interview won't be in your first language.

6. Think out loud on a coding problem

Give me a medium coding problem on [topic] in two sentences, then stop. I'll ask clarifying questions and explain my approach without writing code. Only interrupt if my approach has a bug, and then only with a question that points at it. When I say "over," ask for the time and space complexity, then name one edge case I skipped.

Coding rounds test explanation as much as code. Pair this drill with written practice and the coding interview cheat sheet.

7. The pressure round

Play a demanding interviewer who's short on time. Ask why I want this job, why I'm leaving my current role and what my biggest weakness is. If an answer rambles, say "Give me the short version" and let me try again. Afterwards, tell me where I sounded rushed or defensive.

8. Situational questions with a complication

Ask me three situational questions for this role, each starting with "What would you do if," such as a missed deadline or a disagreement over priorities. After each answer, add one complication, like a stakeholder refusing my plan, and let me respond. Then tell me whether I stayed calm and specific.

9. Your questions for them

End the interview by saying "We have a few minutes. What questions do you have for me?" Answer my questions in character as the hiring manager. Afterwards, rate each of my questions as strong, generic or risky, and suggest one better question I could have asked.

Need questions worth asking? Start with our list of questions to ask the interviewer.

10. Review the transcript (type this after you end voice)

Review the transcript of the voice conversation above. Score each answer 1 to 5 for structure, specificity and relevance to the job description, and quote the line that cost the most points. Then name my three most repeated habits, such as starting with too much background or ending without a result. Finish with the one question I should practice again tomorrow.

OpenAI notes that voice transcripts aren't verbatim records, especially when speech overlaps or moves quickly. Use them to judge content, and a phone recording to judge pace and filler words.

Turn voice sessions into steady progress

One long session a week does less than short, repeated rounds with the same review. Here is a five-day plan that fits within the Go or Plus allowance:

DayVoice round (20 to 30 minutes)Prompts
MondayBehavioral, four questions2, then 10
TuesdayRésumé walk-through4, then 10
WednesdayCoding or role-specific think-aloud6, then 10
ThursdayPanel with two interviewers3, then 10
FridayPressure round and your questions7 and 9, then 10

Limits of ChatGPT voice mode for interview practice

When a dedicated scored mock interview helps

ChatGPT voice mode is flexible, which makes it good for unusual formats such as a panel or a second-language round. A dedicated mock interview helps when you want the same structure and scoring every time. CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview, in the desktop app for Windows and macOS, builds the interview from your résumé and the job description, reads each question aloud, scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer, and ends with a report card. Coding questions never auto-submit, so you can think in silence.

FAQ

Can I practice interviews with ChatGPT voice mode for free?

Yes, with limits. As of October 2026, OpenAI gives Free accounts limited access to Live voice and says those limits may change. Go and Plus include 3 hours of Live voice in any rolling 24-hour period.

How do I stop ChatGPT from interrupting me in voice mode?

Tell it at the start to wait until you say a signal word such as "over." OpenAI says you can ask Live to wait until you're ready. Headphones and a quiet room help, because pauses and background noise can still trigger a reply.

Can ChatGPT voice mode use my résumé?

Yes. Add your résumé and the job description to a project as files or text, or paste them into the chat before you start voice. Voice works inside the chat, so it uses the same context.

Does ChatGPT keep a transcript of my voice mock interview?

Yes. A transcript is added to the chat when you end voice, so you can ask ChatGPT to score it. OpenAI notes it may not exactly match what was said.

Which voice option is best for mock interviews?

Live feels most like a conversation because it can listen and speak at once. If you'd rather take strict turns, Standard is turn-by-turn and transcribes your speech before it responds. Switch under Settings, then Voice, if your plan offers both.

Is ChatGPT voice practice enough to prepare for an interview?

It covers spoken reps and role-play well. Add a timer, a fixed rubric and a weekly recording, or use a scored mock interview if you want results you can compare from week to week.
