AI interview assistants are expensive because every minute of live help runs two paid AI services at once, real-time speech-to-text and a language model, on servers built for low delay, and because vendors keep each customer only for the weeks a job search lasts. Most month-to-month prices checked in October 2026 run from $14.99 to $150, while the raw AI cost of an hour of help works out to roughly $0.17 to $2.60 at public list prices, by our estimate; the rest pays for speed, payments, refunds, support and finding customers.
This page explains why prices land where they do. For what each tool actually charges, see how much an AI interview assistant costs and the cost per hour across tools. Both are part of our 2026 research on interview assistants. We make CoPilot Interview, one of the products priced here.
What does an hour of AI interview help cost to run?
A live session has two metered parts. A speech-to-text model turns the interviewer's voice into text, and a language model writes the answer. The table uses public pay-as-you-go list prices from each provider's own pricing page, checked October 22, 2026. Our assumptions: one hour of streamed audio, and 30 answers an hour, each sending about 3,000 tokens (instructions, résumé context, recent questions) and receiving about 500.
| Component | Public list price (October 2026) | Cost for one hour (our estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming speech-to-text, AssemblyAI | $0.15 an hour (Universal-Streaming) | $0.15 |
| Streaming speech-to-text, Deepgram | $0.0048 a minute (Nova-3, limited-time price; $0.0077 before) | $0.29 to $0.46 |
| Speech-to-text, OpenAI Whisper | $0.006 a minute | $0.36 |
| Language model, low-cost tier | $0.10 per million input tokens, $0.50 per million output (OpenAI) | About $0.02 |
| Language model, mid tier | $2.00 input, $10.00 output per million (OpenAI) | About $0.33 |
| Language model, top tier | $10.00 input, $50.00 output per million (OpenAI) | About $1.65 |
| Card payment | 2.9% + 30¢ per US card charge (Stripe) | $0.73 on a $14.99 charge; $4.65 on $150 |
Add it up and an hour costs from about $0.17 (low-cost transcription and model) to about $2.60 (two audio streams on Deepgram's earlier price plus a top-tier model). Showing two models side by side doubles the model line. Large vendors may negotiate lower rates; these are the public prices anyone can check.
So the AI itself is rarely what makes a $150 month. The gap comes from the costs below.
Why does real-time speed cost extra?
Practice tools can wait a few seconds; live help can't. Speed changes the bill in four ways:
- Streaming, not batch. To show captions while someone is still talking, audio has to stream continuously. AssemblyAI's pricing page notes that streaming is billed on session duration, not audio sent, so idle connection time counts.
- Two audio sources. Some assistants, CoPilot Interview included, can capture both your microphone and the call audio, which can double transcription cost.
- Knowing when a question ends. The tool has to decide fast that the speaker has finished; deciding too early cuts the question short, and waiting longer adds delay.
- Servers kept ready. Low delay needs capacity running before your interview starts, sized for busy hours, not average ones.
The payoff is the speed you see. In CoPilot Interview, a structured answer appears in about 2 seconds after the question ends. Our explainers on where latency comes from and how real-time transcription works go stage by stage.
Why do short job searches push prices up?
Many software products earn from a customer for years. Interview tools lose customers by design: you stop paying when you get the job. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median duration of unemployment at 11.5 weeks in September 2026 (the mean was 24.8 weeks). A vendor that spends money to find you has a few months to earn it back, which shows up in three ways:
- High monthly prices, deep annual discounts. As of October 2026, Final Round AI charges $150 month to month or $25 a month billed annually ($300 up front), Sensei AI $89 monthly or $24 a month billed annually, and Parakeet AI $149.90 a month for unlimited use or $49.99 a month billed yearly.
- Strict refunds. A live tool can be used for one important call and then refunded, so many vendors cap usage or refuse refunds. Card disputes also cost money: Stripe lists $15 for each dispute received.
- Time-sensitive support. A setup problem the evening before an interview can't wait until next week, so support has to be fast.
Refund terms vary as much as prices; we compared them in refund policies across 12 interview tools.
Why minutes, credits and monthly plans?
Each pricing model passes a different share of those costs to you. Examples are from vendors' own sites, checked October 2026. Disclosure: we make CoPilot Interview.
| Pricing model | Example (October 2026) | Why vendors use it | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily free minutes | CoPilot Interview: 15 minutes a day, sessions up to 15 minutes, no card | Lets you test real use; the daily cap limits the vendor's cost | Long rounds need a paid plan |
| Monthly subscription | CoPilot Interview Standard: $14.99 a month (sale; regular $19.99), up to 100 minutes a day | Predictable revenue while your search lasts | Automatic renewal after you're hired |
| Per-minute credits | Interviews Chat: $19 a month for 1,000 credits; 1 credit is 1 minute | Ties your price to its transcription and model cost | Unused credits don't roll over |
| Hourly credits | Parakeet AI: $38 for one hour, cheaper per hour in bundles | You pay only for interviews you have | A high price for a single hour |
| Annual billing | Final Round AI: $25 a month billed annually ($300) | Collects a year of revenue up front | You may be hired in weeks |
| Subscription plus usage credits | Interview Coder: $299 a month for 1,000 usage credits | Caps heavy use within a plan | No refunds; all sales are final |
How can you pay less for an AI interview assistant?
- Start on a free tier. Use it to check audio, speed and answer quality before you pay. Our free vs paid comparison shows what each tier adds.
- Practice first. Most of your hours should be rehearsal, and mock interviews are included on several free tiers, CoPilot Interview's among them.
- Choose monthly for a short search. With a median unemployment spell under three months, a monthly plan you cancel on time often beats a year paid up front.
- Cancel before the renewal date. Set a reminder two days before it; most of the 12 vendors in our refund comparison don't refund a renewal you forgot to cancel.
- Pay for the model you need. In our experience, faster, cheaper models handle most behavioral questions, and premium models matter most for harder technical rounds. Our page on comparing two AI models side by side explains the trade-off.
Best choice: CoPilot Interview. It's built for the pay-less approach above: a free plan with 15 minutes every day, no account or card, all four modes including Mock Interview; then Standard at $14.99 a month (sale; regular $19.99) with 60-minute sessions, up to 100 minutes a day and no gap between sessions; Pro at $29.99 with ChatGPT and Gemini models; Pro+ at $49.99, adding Claude; and Pro Annual at $199.99 a year. Full details are on the pricing page. The honest limits: the full app is desktop only (Windows and macOS), the Android companion is in beta, there's no human coach, and the free plan is 15 minutes a day. Disclosure: we make CoPilot Interview.
Practice it: spend free minutes on rehearsal
The cheapest hour of interview help is the one you spend practicing. Run the browser AI mock interview first, with nothing to install, then use Mock Interview in an AI interview assistant with a daily free allowance: it builds questions from your résumé and the job description, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer. If you use live help in a real interview, follow the rules of the employer or platform you're interviewing with — many people use it only to practice, which works on the free plan.
Start with 15 free minutes a day
CoPilot Interview's free plan needs no account and no card, and includes Mock Interview with scored answers. Upgrade only if you need longer sessions.

Why are AI interview assistants so expensive?
Live help runs real-time speech-to-text and a language model on servers kept ready for low delay, and vendors keep each customer only for a short job search. At public list prices the AI itself costs roughly $0.17 to $2.60 an hour by our estimate, so most of the price covers speed, payments, refunds, support and acquiring customers.
How much does it cost a vendor to run one hour of AI interview help?
By our estimate from October 2026 list prices, about $0.15 to $0.46 for an hour of streaming transcription and about $0.02 to $1.65 for 30 answers from a language model, depending on the model tier. Two audio streams or two models side by side raise that. Large vendors may pay less than list prices.
Is a monthly or annual plan cheaper for interview prep?
For most searches, monthly. The US median duration of unemployment was 11.5 weeks in September 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, so a monthly plan cancelled on time often costs less than a year paid up front, even with a large annual discount.
Why do AI interview tools sell credits instead of subscriptions?
Credits tie your price to the vendor's own per-minute costs for transcription and AI models. They suit people with only a few interviews, but check whether unused credits expire or roll over, and compare the cost per hour with a monthly plan.
Is there a free AI interview assistant?
Several tools have free tiers with limits. CoPilot Interview gives 15 free minutes every day with no account or card, including Mock Interview; it is a free plan, not a trial. We make CoPilot Interview.
Do premium AI models give better interview answers?
In our experience, mainly on harder technical questions. For many behavioral questions a faster, cheaper model is enough, and your own stories and résumé context matter more than the model name.
