A Paradox Olivia interview is usually a text conversation with Olivia, the AI recruiting assistant from Paradox, that screens you against a job's requirements and then books your interview with the hiring team. Olivia chats by text message, WhatsApp or web chat, answers your questions, sends reminders and, at some employers, asks for short recorded video answers or hosts an in-browser video interview. Workday completed its acquisition of Paradox on October 1, 2025 and now markets it as the Workday Paradox Candidate Experience Agent, while paradox.ai still introduces the assistant as Olivia. Every Paradox fact below comes from Paradox's and Workday's own pages, checked in October 2026.
Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand. Olivia passes your answers straight to the employer, so the prep that matters happens before you reply to the first text.
What Olivia is and who uses it
Paradox launched in 2016 and is based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Its FAQ describes a conversational recruiting platform driven by an AI assistant that handles minimum-qualification screening, interview scheduling and candidate questions. Paradox contrasts this with scripted chatbots that give single-turn, pre-programmed replies, and says its conversational AI uses natural language processing to understand intent.
Olivia is built mainly for frontline and high-volume hiring. Workday's closing announcement says Paradox simplifies applications, scheduling and interview coordination, "particularly for frontline industries." Paradox lists retail, restaurants, franchise hiring, healthcare, logistics and trucking, manufacturing, financial services and hospitality among the industries it serves, and its client stories include Chipotle, 7-Eleven, Compass Group and Medtronic. If a text from Olivia arrived soon after you applied for a store, restaurant, warehouse or hospital role, this is the system you're talking to.
How the Paradox Olivia interview works, step by step
- You start the conversation. Paradox says candidates can begin by scanning a QR code, texting a keyword from a job ad, chatting on a career site or clicking apply on a job board such as Indeed.
- Olivia screens you. As soon as the conversation starts, Olivia checks your answers against the requirements the employer set for the role. Workday's product page calls these required knockout questions, asked by chat or text.
- Qualified candidates get interview times. When you meet the requirements, Olivia can schedule you automatically. You pick a slot that works, and it sends reminders.
- Other candidates get a decision or other jobs. If you're not a fit, Paradox says Olivia can respectfully disposition you, which means closing out your application, or share other openings that suit you better.
- Some employers add a video step. Paradox's video product lets employers add short video screening prompts to the conversation and view your recorded responses on demand. Its in-browser video interviews need no logins, downloads or passwords: you click the reminder link and turn on your camera.
- Olivia can send prep materials. Paradox lists candidate prep, meaning materials to review about the role, among Olivia's tasks.
- The interview itself is with the employer. Olivia books time on the hiring team's calendars, and the hiring team runs the interview and makes the decision. Questions about the outcome go to the employer.
What each stage asks of you
| Stage | What Paradox or Workday says (as of October 2026) | What to have ready (our advice) |
|---|---|---|
| Applying | Start by QR code, a text keyword, career-site chat or a job board's apply button | The exact job title and location you want, and the phone number you check most |
| Screening | Olivia checks your answers against the role's requirements; Workday calls them required knockout questions | Accurate answers for every requirement in the posting: availability, start date, travel to the site, any license or certification |
| Scheduling | You choose a time; Olivia books it and sends reminders | Two or three time windows you can definitely keep |
| Recorded video | Short video prompts inside the conversation; the hiring team watches responses on demand | A 30-to-60-second answer to "Why this job?" and one short example of good work |
| Video interview | In the browser, with no downloads or logins; you join from the reminder link | A charged phone or laptop, a tested camera and a quiet spot |
| Your questions | Paradox says its AI answers candidate questions in more than 100 languages | Questions about pay, shifts and training to ask the manager in person |
Channels, languages and how to stop the texts
Paradox's FAQ says its conversational AI works over SMS, WhatsApp and web chat and answers candidate questions in more than 100 languages. Workday's candidate experience page adds Facebook Messenger and says you can apply "without needing logins or passwords."
To stop messages, Paradox's help center describes two routes. Replying with a carrier keyword such as STOP, UNSUBSCRIBE, END or QUIT is a hard unsubscribe: Paradox says it can't change that preference afterward, and you'd need to text a keyword such as START to opt back in. Phrases like "remove me" or "take me off your list" are a soft unsubscribe that blocks that employer from texting you while still letting your replies through.
Think before you send STOP if you still want the job, because the same thread carries your interview confirmation and reminders. If the texts are for a role you've given up on, unsubscribing is fine.
On privacy, Paradox's FAQ says it doesn't sell personal or candidate data and processes client data only to provide its services, following each client's instructions. The privacy policy link on paradox.ai now redirects to Workday's privacy statement.
Limits: what Olivia does and doesn't decide
- The employer sets the bar. Olivia screens against requirements the employer configured, so the employer decides what counts. Answer knockout questions accurately: a mistaken "no" can close your application before a person sees it.
- Sensitive traits stay out, Paradox says. Its screening page says potentially exclusionary criteria such as gender, race or ethnicity never factor into Olivia's screening.
- It isn't the whole interview. Paradox's pages describe screening, scheduling and video tools, not an AI that grades a long spoken interview the way some AI interviewers do. For how fully automated interviewers work, see our explainer on what an AI interviewer is.
- Support is for employers. Paradox's FAQ says its Help Center is for clients, so contact the employer about your application, a missed interview or an offer.
- The names vary. You may see Paradox, Olivia or Workday Paradox in messages and on career sites. They refer to the same product line.
How to prepare for a Paradox Olivia interview
Most of the work is getting your basics straight before the first text, then preparing for the person-to-person interview Olivia books.
- Write your screening facts down. Your availability by day, earliest start date, how you'll get to the location, and any license, certification or age requirement the posting lists. The posting's requirements are what Olivia screens against, so have an accurate answer ready for each one.
- Book a slot you can keep. Choose from the times Olivia offers and save the confirmation. If plans change, reschedule in the same conversation rather than not showing up.
- Rehearse 30-to-60-second video answers. If the employer adds video prompts, practice "Why do you want this job?", "Tell me about a time you helped a customer" and "What does being reliable mean to you?" out loud, on camera, once each. These are practice questions we wrote, not Paradox's.
- Prepare three stories for the manager. Good stories for frontline roles cover reliability, teamwork, and handling a busy shift or a difficult customer. Shape each one with the free STAR story builder.
- Run a scored practice interview. Say your answers out loud and get feedback before the real one.
For that last step, CoPilot Interview's desktop Mock Interview builds a practice interview from your résumé and the job description. You choose the level, 3, 5 or 8 questions, and the mix of question types. It reads each question aloud, scores your spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer, and ends with a report card. Without installing anything, the browser AI mock interview offers 113 real questions across 9 tracks, including behavioral. Our guide to how to pass an AI interview covers other automated formats, and if a voice bot calls you instead of texting, read our AI recruiter phone screen guide.
Other employers use different AI tools for the first step. If you're sent a typed chat interview instead, see our Sapia AI interview guide; for a two-way AI interview by video or phone, see the Alex AI recruiter interview guide.
Rehearse the interview Olivia books
CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview reads questions aloud, scores each spoken answer out of 10 and shows a model answer, so the manager interview isn't your first practice run. The free plan includes 15 minutes every day.
