A Sapia AI interview is a text-based Chat Interview: you type answers to 5 to 7 mostly behavioral questions, sometimes alongside a few multiple-choice questions, with no video, no camera and no time limit. Sapia.ai says every candidate is assessed on the same set of attributes derived from their written answers, that sensitive characteristics such as gender, age and race aren't used in its AI, and that you get a free personality profile and coaching tip afterward that isn't shared with the employer. Every Sapia fact below comes from Sapia.ai's own candidate explainer and website, checked in October 2026.
Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand. Sapia tells candidates not to copy answers and says it checks for plagiarism and machine-written text, covered below.
What Sapia.ai is
Sapia.ai is an AI interview platform that employers use to interview every applicant for a role. It used to be called PredictiveHire; its About page explains the name change. Alongside the Chat Interview it sells tools for building interviews, scheduling live interviews and reviewing candidates, and it lists retail, contact centres, healthcare, airlines, rail, graduate programs and food and beverage among the industries it serves. Customer stories on its homepage include Holland & Barrett, David Jones, Spark NZ and Regis Aged Care.
Sapia pitches the Chat Interview as a way for employers to interview every applicant instead of relying on résumés alone, which is why it shows up in frontline, volume and graduate hiring. For you, that means the chat may be the first step after you apply, so treat it like an interview, not a form.
How the Sapia AI interview works
- You get the link. Either an email invitation or a link inside the employer's applicant tracking system, the site where you applied.
- You enter your details. First and last name, email, phone number and location (pick one of the suggestions that appear as you type), then tick "I accept, continue" to agree to the privacy statement. The Continue button stays disabled until all of this is done.
- You answer one question at a time. Type in the text box and click the arrow to its right to save and move on. Pressing Enter only starts a new line.
- You can edit. Scroll up and click the pencil icon next to an answer to change it.
- You can pause. When you start, you get an email from notification@sapia.ai titled "Online Interview Started" with a unique link back to your saved answers.
- You submit and get your profile. An email brings your My Insights personality profile and a coaching tip.
- The employer takes over. The employer's recruitment team contacts you about next steps. Sapia says it has no visibility of your application before or after the Chat Interview.

What the questions look like
Sapia says the questions are mainly behavioral: each asks for an example from your own experience of a time you showed a particular work-related trait or behavior, and they relate to the role and company you applied to. It also says your examples don't have to come from work. School, family, friendships and hobbies all count, which helps if this is your first job.
The questions below are ones we wrote to practice with, not Sapia's questions.
| Trait to show | Practice question (we wrote it) | What a good answer includes |
|---|---|---|
| Customer care | Tell us about a time you went out of your way to help someone. | Who it was, what you did beyond the minimum, what changed for them |
| Reliability | Describe a time you kept a commitment when it was inconvenient. | The commitment, the obstacle, how you followed through |
| Teamwork | Tell us about a time you worked with someone who saw things differently. | The disagreement, how you listened, the outcome |
| Learning | Describe something you taught yourself recently. | Why you started, how you learned, what you can do now |
| Pressure | Tell us about a time you had too much to do at once. | How you prioritized, what you let go, the result |
How to write a strong Chat Interview answer
Sapia says you're assessed on your written answers and nothing more, so the content and clarity of each answer carry the whole interview. A simple shape fits comfortably in 50 to 150 words:
- Situation (one sentence): where you were and what was going on.
- Action (two or three sentences): what you did, in the first person, with one concrete detail.
- Result (one sentence): what happened, with a number if you have one.
- Reflection (one sentence): what you learned or would do again.
An example we wrote, about 90 words: "Last summer I worked the front counter at a busy café. A customer's online order had been lost, and she had ten minutes before a meeting. I apologized, told her exactly what I would do, and asked the kitchen to make her order next while my manager approved a free coffee. I checked back twice so she wasn't left guessing. She made her meeting and later left a thank-you note for my manager. I learned that telling people the plan calms them faster than apologizing again."
Then check spelling and grammar, which Sapia specifically recommends, and keep your own voice. Sapia's last tip is to be yourself and let your personality show, and it warns against copying answers from anywhere.
Limits and things to know
- The word guidance differs on the same page. The tips say 50 to 100 words and the FAQ says 50 to 150. Aiming for about 100 words fits both.
- No profile reuse. Sapia says you can't currently use your profile to apply for other jobs.
- Support can't see your application. Sapia's support helps only with the Chat Interview itself. Questions about your application's progress go to the employer.
- The profile is for you. The HEXACO profile covers honesty-humility, emotionality, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness to experience. Sapia says there's no right or wrong personality score, and the employer doesn't see this profile.
- A live interview may follow. Sapia also sells interview scheduling for live interviews, so the chat can be the first of several steps.
- If the link fails. Update to the latest Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, clear your browser history, or open the link in a private window. Lost the link? Search your inbox and spam folder for notification@sapia.ai or "Online Interview."
A 3-day prep plan for the Sapia AI interview
| Day | Focus | What you should have at the end |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | List five stories from work, school, volunteering or hobbies and shape each with the STAR story builder | Five stories with one line each for situation, action and result |
| 2 | Write two practice answers of about 100 words to questions from the table above, then read them aloud to check they flow | Two answers you'd be happy to submit, in your own voice |
| 3 | A scored spoken mock for the interviews that follow, then the real Chat Interview in a quiet 30-minute block | A calm, unhurried submission |
The free STAR story builder handles day 1. Sapia's chat is typed, but the same stories carry over to any phone or in-person interview that follows. For those, CoPilot Interview's desktop Mock Interview builds a practice interview from your résumé and the job description, reads each question aloud, scores your spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer, and ends with a report card. The free plan includes 15 minutes every day. Without installing anything, the browser AI mock interview offers 113 real questions across 9 tracks, including behavioral.
For other automated formats, see our explainer on what an AI interviewer is and our guide to how to pass an AI interview. If an employer texts you through Paradox instead, our Paradox Olivia interview guide covers that flow, and our AI interview prep checklist helps you plan the final hour.
Turn your stories into spoken answers
CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview reads questions aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with a model answer, so you're ready for the conversation after the chat. The free plan includes 15 minutes every day.
