How to Pass an AI Interview: What It Scores, How to Answer and How to Practice

One-way video, conversational AI interviewers and bot screens, explained from the vendors' own candidate guides, with a setup checklist and a practice loop you can start today.

To pass an AI interview, prepare for a structured screen with a strict format. An AI interviewer asks questions tied to the job, records or transcribes what you say, and scores your answers against criteria built from the role. You pass by giving short, specific, well-structured spoken answers that match the job description, by keeping your camera, microphone and connection reliable, and by knowing what to do if the software stalls. Everything below about how these tools work comes from the vendors' own candidate guides (HireVue, Mercor and micro1), checked in October 2026.

One rule runs through the whole guide. Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand. AI interview platforms publish their own rules on outside help, and breaking them costs far more than a weak answer.

What an AI interview is: three common formats

"AI interview" covers three different experiences, and the one you have been sent changes how you should prepare.

FormatWhat happensLength the vendor states
One-way (recorded) videoA question appears as text or video and you record your answer within a time limit. No one responds in the moment. Some employers add an AI assessment of your answers.HireVue: most video-based assessments have five to eight questions and take under 20 to 30 minutes; it suggests setting aside 45 minutes.
Conversational AI interviewerAn AI voice asks questions in real time, listens to your answer and asks follow-ups based on what you said, usually with your camera on.Mercor: most take about 20 minutes. micro1 (Zara): 20 to 40 minutes, about 7 minutes per skill assessed.
Bot phone or chat screenA short automated call or chat that checks the basics: interest, availability, location, work authorization, pay expectations and required credentials.Varies by employer and system.

Many employers chain these: a chat screen, then a recorded or conversational interview, then human interviews. For how employer-side AI interviewers differ from candidate-side tools, see our AI interviewer vs AI interview copilot explainer.

What AI interviewers score, according to the vendors

Here is what each vendor says about scoring in its own materials:

Read across those and a pattern appears. The scoring rewards answering the question that was asked, a clear structure, specific evidence from your own experience, the vocabulary of the job description and composure. Nothing in any of these guides rewards length for its own sake.

How to answer so the scoring works in your favor

  1. Answer in your first sentence. State your answer or decision, then support it. A scorer reading a transcript has to find your point; don't make it dig.
  2. Use the job description's words, honestly. HireVue and Mercor both say questions or rubrics come from the job description. If the posting says "stakeholder communication" and you have done it, name it in those words.
  3. Use STAR for past-behavior questions. Situation, Task, Action, Result, with most of your time on Action and a concrete Result. Draft six to eight stories in advance with the free STAR story builder, and see these STAR examples for the shape.
  4. For situational questions, lead with the first step. Say what you would do first and why, then the next step and the trade-off you are accepting.
  5. Be specific. Numbers, tools, team size and your own role. Say "I" for what you did and "we" only for the team's result.
  6. Respect the clock. HireVue notes that most on-demand interviews give you just a few minutes per answer. Aim for 60 to 120 seconds unless the question needs more.
  7. Expect follow-ups. Conversational interviewers probe, so anything you mention can become the next question. Mention only what you can explain.
  8. Don't go silent for long. Mercor warns that extended silences may cause its AI to interject. If it cuts in, tell it you weren't finished, and ask it to repeat or clarify a question whenever you need to.

Here is the difference in practice. Both answers below are examples we wrote for the question "Tell me about a time you had to learn a new tool quickly."

What the scorer looks forWeak answer (example)Strong answer (example)
A clear point"I'm a fast learner and always pick up new software.""Two weeks before a release, I had to move our build pipeline to a new CI tool."
Your actions"We used a lot of tools at my last job and I adapted.""I rebuilt our three main workflows in a branch and ran both systems side by side for a week."
A resultNone given."We switched on schedule and builds went from about 14 minutes to 9."

A practice loop with a scored mock interview

The most common problem in AI interviews is format shock: talking to a timer or a synthetic voice for the first time on the day it counts. Fix it with scored repetitions.

  1. Gather your inputs. The job description and your current résumé. Mercor builds its questions from both, so your practice should too.
  2. Run a scored mock. In the CoPilot Interview desktop app, Mock Interview builds the interview from your résumé and the job description. You choose the level, 3, 5 or 8 questions, the mix (behavioral, technical, system design, coding), your coding language and an optional focus. It reads each question aloud, listens to your spoken answer and scores it out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer, then gives you a report card. Coding questions never auto-submit, so you can think in silence.
  3. Re-answer your lowest score in your own words. Borrow the structure of the model answer, not its sentences. Our guide to reading a score out of 10 explains how to act on low, middle and high scores.
  4. Rehearse on camera once. HireVue suggests recording yourself on a phone, tablet or computer to get used to answering on camera. Watch it back once muted for posture and eye line, then once with sound for filler words.
  5. Use the platform's own practice. HireVue gives you a practice question before the real interview. Mercor offers a free Practice Interview that isn't shared with companies, and micro1 offers a free Interview Prep tool.
  6. Repeat for three to five days. The CoPilot Interview free plan includes 15 minutes every day with all four modes, including Mock Interview. With nothing to install, the browser AI mock interview has 113 real questions across 9 tracks.
Tip: Practice the follow-up, not just the opener. After each mock answer, ask yourself the most obvious "why?" or "how exactly?" question and answer it out loud. Conversational AI interviewers are built to go one level deeper.

Setup checklist: camera, microphone, room and browser

CheckWhat the vendors say
BrowserMercor recommends the latest Google Chrome, supports Edge and Safari, and does not support Firefox or mobile browsers. micro1 recommends Chrome (Safari also supported) and advises against Incognito mode, Firefox and Brave.
Device and connectionmicro1 lists 8 GB of RAM, 4 vCPUs and a stable 4G-or-faster connection. HireVue recommends at least 350 Kbps up and down for its on-demand interviews and a charged or plugged-in device.
LightingHireVue: light in front of you, and close the blinds if a window is behind you.
Camera positionHireVue suggests placing your video window near the top center of the screen so looking at it reads as looking at the camera. Mercor asks that your full face stays visible.
AudioMercor recommends headphones and an external microphone, plus its test sound in the waiting room.
RoomA quiet, distraction-free space. micro1 also suggests closing unnecessary apps and browser tabs.
MaterialsMercor suggests pen and paper, and a calculator if relevant. HireVue says you can keep notes beside you as a reminder. Follow whatever your own invitation allows.
Camera and display rulesSome interviews ask you to share your entire screen and keep your webcam on, and micro1's proctored interviews also limit you to one monitor.

Run the platform's own system check on the same device, browser and network you will use for the real thing. Mercor's waiting room has setup checks for your microphone, camera and lighting; micro1 has a system-check page.

What to do if the AI interview glitches

Whatever the platform, screenshot the error, note the time and email the recruiter that day. Don't treat retakes as practice: Mercor's waiting room asks candidates to save retakes for technical issues and notes that hiring managers can see your retake count.

Accommodations, human alternatives and your data

Nerves are normal in any format. Our interview anxiety techniques work just as well when the interviewer is software, and our guide to recorded one-way video interviews goes deeper on that format.

Rehearse the format before the real one

CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview builds questions from your résumé and the job description, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix. The free plan includes 15 minutes every day, with no credit card.

FAQ

Can you fail an AI interview?

Yes. AI interviews are usually an early screen, and answers that miss the question, lack specifics or fail a must-have qualification can stop your application there. HireVue says that for most jobs its interviews are a first step, with people making hiring decisions after person-to-person interviews.

How long is an AI interview?

It depends on the platform. HireVue says most video-based assessments take under 20 to 30 minutes and suggests setting aside 45. Mercor says most of its interviews take about 20 minutes, and micro1 says Zara interviews run 20 to 40 minutes depending on how many skills are assessed.

Is a human involved in an AI interview decision?

Usually, at some point. HireVue describes its interviews as a first cut before person-to-person interviews, micro1 records Zara sessions so human recruiters can review results, and Mercor says human reviewers may review assessments.

Can I use ChatGPT or an AI assistant during an AI interview?

No. Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand. Mercor's policy, for example, asks candidates not to use large language models to compose their interview responses.

Can I retake an AI interview?

Sometimes. Mercor allows up to three retakes of an interview, only your most recent attempt counts, and hiring managers can see your retake count. Other platforms leave retakes to the employer, so check your invitation before assuming you get a second try.

How do I practice for an AI interview for free?

Use the platform's own practice first: HireVue's practice question, Mercor's Practice Interview or micro1's Interview Prep tool. Then run scored mocks in CoPilot Interview, whose free plan includes 15 minutes every day with Mock Interview.
