Can I ask for a human interviewer instead of AI? Yes. You can always ask, and some employers offer a non-AI route, but in most places they don't have to agree just because you prefer a person. Your request carries the most weight when it's tied to a reason the law recognizes, such as a disability accommodation, when you make it before you start, and when you name the alternative you want.
Below: when you have more than a polite request, how to ask, two email templates, what to expect, and how to prepare if the answer is no. For background on the format, see what an AI interviewer is.
When you can ask for a human interviewer instead of AI
These situations give your request real backing. Outside them you're asking for a preference, which is still worth doing politely. This is a summary as of October 2026, not legal advice, so check the law where you live.
| Your situation | What you can ask for | What backs it up |
|---|---|---|
| A disability makes the AI format harder, such as a speech impairment, autism, or a hearing or vision disability | A reasonable accommodation: extra time, an accessible version or a change to the process, such as a different format | The ADA requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations during hiring unless that would cause undue hardship, per the U.S. Justice Department's guidance on AI in hiring |
| The job is in New York City and you live there | Instructions for requesting an alternative selection process or an accommodation | The city's rules require those instructions in the notice, but say employers don't have to provide an alternative process |
| You're in the EU and a decision about you is made solely by software | Human intervention, a chance to give your point of view and to contest the decision | EU data protection law, as the European Commission explains it |
| You're a Colorado resident and an AI-influenced decision goes against you, from January 1, 2027 | Correction of factually incorrect data, and human review and reconsideration where commercially reasonable | Colorado SB 26-189; see our guide to AI interview laws and candidate rights |
| The employer's platform has a non-AI route | The equivalent route without AI | As of October 2026, HireVue's AI Interviewer page says "Candidates can opt out" and lists equivalent non-AI paths |
Two limits are worth knowing. The EU right covers decisions made solely by automated means, so it may not apply if a recruiter genuinely reviews the result. And a vendor offering an opt-out doesn't mean every employer uses it, so ask the recruiter how their process works.
How to ask, step by step
- Read the invitation first. Look for an accommodations link, a notice about AI, or an option to request another format, and read the first screen of the interview before you click start.
- Ask before you start. A request before the interview is easier to grant than a redo after it.
- Write to the recruiter. The employer decides the process. Platform support usually handles technical problems, not format changes.
- Give the reason in a sentence or two. Keep it to the barrier and the change you need. If it's a preference, say why a conversation would show your skills better.
- Name the alternative. A phone or video call with a recruiter, written answers, extra time or a timer removed. Offering two options makes yes easier.
- Offer a fallback date. Say when you'll complete the AI interview if they can't change it, so your link doesn't expire while you wait.
- Keep a copy. Save your request and the reply, with dates.
Email templates for asking
Both are examples we wrote. Replace the brackets and keep it short.
Example 1: an accommodation request
Subject: Interview format request for [role]
Hello [recruiter's name],
Thank you for inviting me to interview for the [role] position. I have [a speech disability / a condition that affects my hearing or processing time], and the automated, timed format makes it hard for me to show my skills accurately. As an accommodation, could I complete this stage as a phone or video interview with a member of the team? If that isn't possible, extra time per question and a person reviewing my recording would help.
I can be available at any time that works for you this week.
Best regards,
[Your name]
Example 2: a preference request
Hello [name], thank you for the invitation to the AI interview for [role]. I do my best work in conversation, and I'd welcome the chance to complete this stage as a short call with you or someone on the team. If that's not an option, no problem: I'll complete the AI interview by [date]. Best, [your name]
Before and after: the same request, rewritten
Before: "I don't do AI interviews. Can I just talk to a real person?"
After: Example 2 above. It thanks them, gives a reason tied to doing the job well, asks a yes-or-no question and offers a fallback with a date. A recruiter can say yes without escalating it, and if they say no, you haven't lost the slot.
What to expect after you ask
- A yes. You get a call or video interview with a person, sometimes scheduled later than the AI link would have allowed.
- A different accommodation. Extra time, a removed timer or a retake instead of a person. If that solves the barrier, it's usually worth accepting.
- A no. Employers can decline a preference request. Ask whether a person reviews every AI result, then decide whether to continue.
- No reply. Follow up once after two or three business days, and say when you'll complete the AI interview if you don't hear back.
Asking shouldn't count against you. The Justice Department's guidance says employers should make sure that asking for an accommodation doesn't hurt an applicant's chance of getting the job. For tone and timing on follow-ups, see our guide to the follow-up email after an interview.

Can I refuse an AI interview?
You can decline, but the employer may then end your application unless it offers another format. Ask for an alternative first, explain why in a sentence or two, and say when you could complete the AI interview if the answer is no.
Do employers have to offer a human interview instead of AI?
Usually not just because you prefer one. A disability accommodation request carries more weight under the ADA, and in the EU you can ask for human intervention in decisions made solely by software. New York City requires employers to tell you how to request an alternative but doesn't require them to provide one.
How do I ask for an accommodation in an AI interview?
Email the recruiter before you start, describe the barrier in a sentence or two, and name the change you need, such as extra time, a removed timer, an accessible version or an interview with a person. Keep a copy of the request and the reply.
Will asking for a human interviewer hurt my chances?
It shouldn't, and the U.S. Justice Department's guidance says employers should make sure asking for an accommodation doesn't hurt an applicant's chances. Keep the request short and polite, and offer to complete the AI interview by a set date if they can't change the format.
What should I say when asking for a human interviewer?
Thank them for the invitation, give a one-sentence reason, ask whether the stage can be a call or video interview with a person, and offer a fallback, such as completing the AI interview by a specific date.
How can I practice if I can't avoid the AI interview?
Practice answering out loud with scored feedback. CoPilot Interview's free plan includes 15 minutes every day of Mock Interview, which scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix, and the browser demo needs nothing installed.
