What happens after an AI interview is usually a review, not an instant verdict. The system turns your recorded answers into a transcript and ratings or a summary, those results land in the employer's hiring system, and a recruiter or hiring manager decides whether you move to the next round. How long that takes, and whether you hear anything in between, depends on the employer rather than on the AI.
Vendors say this plainly. HireVue's candidate FAQ says its interviews help recruiters make the first cut, with "hiring decisions are made by people" afterwards. Alex's candidate FAQ says it "does not automatically reject candidates" (both as of October 2026). This guide walks through what happens to your interview, who sees what, how to follow up and how to ask for feedback.
What happens after an AI interview, step by step
- Your answers are processed. Speech is converted to text, then rated against the skills the employer chose. HireVue's 2026 explainability statement adds a detail worth knowing: if its AI can't detect enough content in a response (an answer that's too short, speech that isn't clear enough, or a microphone problem), that response isn't scored by AI and is flagged for human review instead (as of October 2026).
- Results go to the hiring team. Depending on the vendor, that means scores, a transcript, a summary or the recording itself. Alex says it shares the recording and transcript with the hiring team so human reviewers can make the decisions.
- A person reviews and decides. A recruiter compares candidates and chooses who moves on. On talent marketplaces the flow differs: Mercor's AI interview guide says it keeps your recordings and transcript to evaluate your candidacy and recommend your profile to employers.
- You're notified, or you hear nothing. Mercor says you are notified when your application moves to the next stage. Some employers send rejections; others don't.
- The next round is usually with people. HireVue says that if recruiters move you past its screening step, you're almost certain to have one or more person-to-person interviews later on.
Who sees what after your AI interview
Here is what typically exists after the session and whether you can usually get it. Vendors and employers differ, so treat the right-hand column as a starting point for a polite question, not a promise.
| What exists | Who usually sees it | Can you get it? |
|---|---|---|
| Recording (video or audio) | The hiring team; the vendor stores it under the employer's settings | Rarely. Mercor says it can't share interview recordings or transcripts. |
| Transcript | Recruiters, sometimes hiring managers | Usually not, but you can ask |
| Competency ratings | Recruiters | Sometimes. HireVue says employers can turn on a Candidate Feedback Report for candidates. |
| AI summary | Recruiters and interviewers in later rounds | Generally not shared with candidates |
| Retake count | On Mercor, hiring managers can see it | You know it already |
| Your stored data | Controlled by the employer's retention settings | You can ask the employer to delete it; HireVue says the company you applied to decides |
The practical point: assume the next interviewer may have your transcript or a summary in front of them. Your AI interview answers become the starting point for the human round, so prepare to go deeper on the same stories rather than telling new ones that contradict them.
How long until you hear back after an AI interview?
There's no standard timeline, and the vendors don't promise one. Mercor says only that you're notified when your application moves on, and Alex says the employer will reach out with next steps if it wants to move forward. AI scoring can be quick, but the decision waits for people, and people often review in batches, wait for more candidates to finish, and fit reviews around other work.
- If you were given a date, wait until it passes before checking in.
- If you weren't, a short status check after about a week is reasonable. That's common courtesy, not a vendor rule.
- Write down when you finished and which questions you got. Both help when you follow up and when you prepare for the next round.
For typical waits by hiring stage, see how long it takes to hear back after an interview.
Follow-up email after an AI interview (example)
Write to the recruiter or the contact named in your invitation, not to the AI vendor. Alex, for example, tells candidates to contact their primary contact at the employer about next steps and to use its support team for technical access issues.
Before (example we wrote): "Hi, I did the AI interview thing yesterday. Did I pass? Please send me my score."
After (example we wrote):
- Subject: AI interview completed: Customer Success Manager application
- Body: "Hi Dana, I completed the AI interview for the Customer Success Manager role on October 20. The questions about onboarding new accounts confirmed how much I'd like to work on your mid-market team. One thing I didn't get to mention: last quarter I ran renewal calls for 35 accounts and kept all but two. Could you share the expected timeline for next steps? Thank you, Sam Ortiz"
The second version confirms you finished, shows specific interest, adds one relevant piece of evidence and asks a question the recruiter can answer. Keep it to one email. Don't attach a re-recorded answer, and don't ask for your score in the first message. For more templates, see our follow-up email guide and thank-you email examples.
How to ask for feedback after an AI interview
Expect limits. Alex says "we are unable to provide feedback to you directly", and some employers have policies against sharing detailed feedback. Some do share a report: HireVue says employers can enable a Candidate Feedback Report that shows how you performed on the assessment. If you received one, read which competencies scored lowest and pick stories that show those skills better next time.
Ask after a decision, not while you're waiting. A short, specific request gets a better response than "Why was I rejected?"
Example we wrote: "Thank you for letting me know. If you're able to share, I'd value one or two points from my interview that I could strengthen for future roles. Either way, I appreciate your time."
If no feedback comes, review your own answers. Our guides on getting feedback on interview answers and why you might not get the job after a good interview cover what to check.
Your data after an AI interview
You can usually ask what happens to your recording. HireVue says it keeps your data for the retention period the employer sets, and that the company you applied to, not HireVue, decides whether and when to delete it. Some laws add rights. Under Illinois's Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act, if an employer used AI to analyze your recorded video interview for an Illinois-based job, it must delete your interviews within 30 days of your request and tell anyone it shared them with to delete them too (as of October 2026). This is a summary, not legal advice; rules differ by location, so check the law where you live. Our explainer on AI interview laws and candidate rights covers more.
Retakes and second chances
- Check the platform's rules before asking. Mercor allows up to three retakes across applications related to the same interview, asks candidates to reserve retakes for technical issues and notes that hiring managers can see your retake count (as of October 2026). On some one-way video platforms, a submitted answer is final even if you had takes left.
- If a technical problem ruined the session, email the recruiter the same day with the time, what went wrong and a screenshot, and ask whether a retake is possible.
- Don't ask to redo it just because you think it went badly. Use that energy for the next round instead.
What to do while you wait
- Write down every question you were asked and the story you used for each. The human round often goes deeper on the same competencies.
- Add a second layer of detail to each story: who disagreed, what you'd do differently, the before-and-after numbers.
- Practice the next round out loud. Our free AI interview assistant includes a Mock Interview mode that builds questions from your résumé and the job description, reads each one aloud and scores your spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer. The free plan gives you 15 minutes every day. Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand.
- Try a quick browser round. The free AI interview demo has 145 real interview questions across 10 tracks, graded by AI.
- Keep applying. Mercor tells candidates they are welcome to keep applying to other open roles on its platform while they wait.

How long does it take to hear back after an AI interview?
There's no standard timeline. Scoring can be fast, but a person usually reviews the results and decides, and that depends on the employer's schedule. If you weren't given a date, a short status check to the recruiter after about a week is reasonable.
Does a human review my AI interview?
Usually. HireVue says hiring decisions are made by people, and Alex says it shares the recording and transcript with the hiring team so human reviewers can decide (both as of October 2026). Ask the recruiter if you want to know how your employer reviews results.
Can I see my AI interview score or transcript?
Usually not. Mercor says it can't share interview recordings or transcripts. Some employers that use HireVue turn on a Candidate Feedback Report, so check your email after the assessment, and ask the recruiter if you didn't get one.
Does the AI reject candidates automatically?
It depends on the vendor and the employer's settings. Alex, for example, says it does not make final hiring decisions and does not automatically reject candidates (as of October 2026). If it matters to you, ask the recruiter how results are reviewed.
Should I send a thank-you email after an AI interview?
There's no interviewer to thank, but a short note to the recruiter is reasonable. Confirm you completed it, name one specific reason you want the role, add one relevant fact you didn't mention and ask about the timeline.
Can I ask for my AI interview video to be deleted?
You can ask the employer, which usually controls retention. In Illinois, if AI analyzed your recorded video interview for an Illinois-based job, the employer must delete it within 30 days of your request. Rules differ elsewhere, so check the law where you live.
