Alex AI Recruiter Interview: How It Works and How to Prepare

Alex runs live, two-way first-round interviews for employers and staffing firms. Here is the candidate flow, the three formats, what the hiring team sees, and how to practice.

An Alex AI recruiter interview is a live, two-way first-round interview with Alex, an AI interviewer that employers use to run structured, role-specific interviews over video, phone or chat. Alex asks follow-up questions based on your answers, records the interview and shares the recording and transcript with the employer's hiring team, and its candidate FAQ says it does not make final hiring decisions or automatically reject anyone. Alex is the business name of Apriora Inc. (the site footer reads "Apriora Inc. dba Alex"), so an invitation that mentions Apriora comes from the same company. Every Alex fact below comes from alex.com, checked in October 2026.

Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand. Alex monitors its interviews for outside help, as described below, and the employer decides what happens with anything it flags.

How the Alex AI recruiter interview works

  1. You get a scheduling email. It contains a link to pick a time. Alex says it's available 24/7, so you can choose any date and time.
  2. You can reschedule at any time. Use the link in Alex's confirmation email, or in the calendar invite if you added it to your calendar.
  3. You join on any device. Video interviews run in the browser, work on phones and need no app. Phone interviews need no webcam, app or internet connection.
  4. Alex interviews you. Questions follow an interview guide customized to the role. Alex asks follow-ups based on what you actually say, reacts to your answers and handles interruptions and questions from you.
  5. Checks run in the background. Alex says its proctoring runs inside the interview, with nothing for you to install or do, and that video interviews include automatic identity verification.
  6. The hiring team reviews. They get the recording, a searchable transcript, a role-fit score and any flags. People at the employer make every hiring decision.
  7. The employer gets back to you. Alex can't give you feedback directly. The employer contacts you if it wants to move forward, and on phone screens Alex can book the next round while you're still on the call.

Video, phone or chat: the three Alex formats

FormatWhat Alex says (as of October 2026)How to set up (our advice)
VideoA real-time, two-way conversation in the browser, recorded and transcribed. Alex recommends video to employers for the strongest signal and identity verification.Camera at eye level, light in front of you, headphones, a quiet room
PhoneAlex calls you; no webcam, app or internet needed. It says it understands accents, pauses and interruptions.A charged phone, good signal and a room where you can talk freely
Chat (SMS or WhatsApp)A two-way interview by text messageFull sentences, one point per message, proofread before you send

Alex also switches languages based on the candidate's preference; its site says it works in more than 30 languages. If you'd rather interview in a language other than the job posting's, ask the employer before your slot.

Alex's phone interview page adds that it can call past applicants to check interest and availability, so you may hear from Alex about a new role if you're in an employer's or agency's list of past applicants. For the general pattern of automated calls, see our AI recruiter phone screen guide.

What Alex asks and what the employer sees

Alex's AI interviewer page says interviews are customized to each role by domain-specific AI and are built to capture behavioral signals and soft skills that keywords miss. Expect structured questions about the job's core skills, plus behavioral questions about how you've worked, each followed by a deeper question when your answer opens one up.

Its candidate FAQ says Alex uses the content of the interview and your application materials to summarize you for the hiring team. It does not scrape LinkedIn, GitHub or Stack Overflow, or build profiles from third-party data. Your résumé and application answers are in scope; your social profiles aren't.

After the interview, the employer can open searchable transcripts, role-fit scores and fraud flags, and can chat with Alex to ask follow-up questions about your answers, such as how you handled the behavioral questions.

Alex's Proctor product says it rates the likelihood that a candidate had assistance and shows the moments behind each rating. The signals it lists include a second voice, a second person in frame, sustained off-screen glances, tab switching, answers read from an external source and AI-written answers. It says it reads the pattern of the whole conversation rather than the quality of one answer: generic phrasing with no first-person detail, or a reply read word for word, reads differently from someone thinking out loud. A flag doesn't decide the outcome by itself; each employer configures how flagged interviews are handled.

The practical lesson is the same as for any good interview: talk through your own experience in the first person, with specific details, and think out loud when you need a moment.

Technical setup and what to do if it breaks

Tip: If Alex mishears you or cuts in, say so plainly and ask it to repeat the question. Alex says it handles interruptions and back-and-forth, so treat it the way you'd treat a recruiter on a call.

Who uses Alex, and the limits for candidates

Alex says it's built for enterprise talent acquisition teams, staffing agencies and recruitment firms, and high-volume hiring. Its site lists healthcare, manufacturing, research and bio, retail, professional services, early careers, and RPO and staffing among its industries, and it says it connects with more than 30 applicant tracking systems. So you can meet the same AI interviewer whether you applied directly to an employer or through an agency.

How to prepare for an Alex interview

  1. Re-read your application. Alex works from your application materials, so be ready to explain every role, project and skill you listed in 60 to 90 seconds.
  2. Map the job description. Pick the five skills the posting stresses and attach one story to each.
  3. Prepare the next layer. Alex digs into specific answers, so for each story know the hardest moment, how you measured the result and what you'd do differently.
  4. Rehearse out loud with a voice-led mock. Practicing spoken answers to a voice that asks the questions is the closest match to Alex's format.
  5. Test your setup the day before. Use the same device, room and connection you'll use for the real interview.

For step 4, CoPilot Interview's desktop Mock Interview builds a practice interview from your résumé and the job description. You choose the level, 3, 5 or 8 questions, and the mix of behavioral, technical, system design and coding. It reads each question aloud, listens to your spoken answer, scores it out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer, and ends with a report card. The free plan includes 15 minutes every day. Without installing anything, the browser AI mock interview has 113 real questions across 9 tracks, and the free STAR story builder gives each story a clear shape. Our guide to what a score out of 10 means explains how to read the feedback.

For the bigger picture, see our explainer on what an AI interviewer is and our guide to how to pass an AI interview. Other two-way AI interviewers work similarly: our Talview AI interview guide covers Ivy, and our Mercor AI interview guide covers a résumé-driven format with published retake rules.

Practice a voice-led interview first

CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview builds questions from your résumé and the job description, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10, so your Alex interview isn't your first rehearsal. The free plan includes 15 minutes every day.
