CoPilot Interview still runs on Windows 10 as well as Windows 11, so you do not have to upgrade before your interviews, but Windows 10 stopped receiving free security updates on October 14, 2025, and a job search is a bad time to run an unpatched machine that handles your resume, your email and video calls with strangers' links. Our advice on Windows 10 end of support for an interview season: if your laptop is eligible for Windows 11, upgrade at least a week before your first interview and never the day before; if it is not eligible, keep Windows 10, tighten the basics, and plan the replacement for after the search.
What end of support actually means
End of support does not switch anything off. Windows 10 boots, your apps run, and meeting apps keep working. What stopped on October 14, 2025 is the free monthly stream of security fixes from Microsoft, so any newly found flaw stays open on your machine. Microsoft has described extended security update options under its own terms; check its current guidance for whether one applies to you. Browser makers and most app vendors, including us, continue to update their software on Windows 10 for now.
The risk is therefore gradual, not sudden, and it is highest for the things a job search involves: opening attachments from recruiters, clicking meeting links from people you have never met, and signing in to new accounts. Our Windows guide covers the app itself on both versions.
Should you upgrade before the interview?
| Your situation | Recommendation | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible for Windows 11, first interview more than a week away | Upgrade now | Finish and re-test everything at least seven days before |
| Eligible, first interview within a week | Wait | Upgrade after this round of interviews |
| Not eligible for Windows 11 | Stay on Windows 10 and tighten the basics below | Plan a replacement after the search |
| Buying a new laptop | Set it up early | Install and test the meeting apps and the assistant a week before |
A major upgrade can reset microphone permissions and default audio devices, which is why the week of margin matters. Our page on what to check after an OS update is the five-minute test to run once the upgrade finishes.
Keeping Windows 10 safe enough for a job search
- Keep the browser current. Browsers still update on Windows 10 and they are where most recruiter links open.
- Keep Windows Security or your antivirus on and let its definitions update; those continue.
- Install meeting apps from official sources only, and be suspicious of a "meeting plugin" a link asks you to download.
- Use the Microsoft Store version of CoPilot Interview where you can. It installs in one click, updates itself, and shows no SmartScreen warning; the direct download shows the standard SmartScreen "more info" step on first run. Both are version 1.3.17. See installing from the Microsoft Store.
- Keep your resume and notes backed up somewhere other than the laptop.
None of this makes an unsupported system supported. It lowers the odds for the weeks you need the machine. The system requirements page has the baseline for both Windows versions.
Avoid an update landing on interview day
Whichever version you run, an update that installs itself at the wrong moment is the more immediate threat to an interview than an unpatched flaw. Two days before: open Windows Update, install whatever is pending, and restart. Then pause updates until after the interview; Windows 10 and 11 both let you pause for a period from the Windows Update settings page. Set active hours to cover the interview time so Windows will not restart on its own.
After any restart, run the audio check: open the assistant, press Ctrl+Shift+L, play a video with speech, and confirm a caption appears and an answer follows about 2 seconds after the speech pauses. Confirm the meeting app's speaker and microphone still point at your headset. Close everything else before you join.
Where CoPilot Interview fits
CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant for Windows 10 and 11 and for macOS 12 and later, available as a direct download or from the Microsoft Store, both at version 1.3.17. It runs beside your meeting app, never joins the call, shows a caption of each question and then a structured answer, and includes AI mock interviews that build questions from your resume and the job description and score each spoken answer out of 10. Mock interviews are the place to start; live help is for interviews where it is allowed, so follow your employer's rules. The free plan costs $0 with no credit card, includes mock interviews, and gives 15 minutes of live help a day in sessions of up to 15 minutes. Audio is streamed in short segments for transcription and is not stored on our servers; a text transcript is saved only in your Documents folder. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
Does CoPilot Interview still work on Windows 10?
Yes. Version 1.3.17 runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11, as a direct download or from the Microsoft Store. The Store version updates itself and shows no SmartScreen warning. Windows 10 itself stopped receiving free security updates on October 14, 2025, which is a reason to plan an upgrade, not a reason the app stops.
Should I upgrade to Windows 11 before a job interview?
If your laptop is eligible and the interview is more than a week away, yes, and re-test audio and permissions afterwards. If the interview is within a week, wait until the round is over. An upgrade can reset microphone permissions and default audio devices, so never do it the day before.
Is it safe to use Windows 10 for a job search after end of support?
Safer than it sounds if you keep the browser and antivirus definitions current, install meeting apps only from official sources, treat unexpected downloads from recruiter links with suspicion, and back up your documents. It is still unsupported, so plan a replacement or upgrade for after the search.
How do I stop Windows from updating during my interview?
Two days before, install pending updates and restart. Then pause updates from the Windows Update settings page and set active hours to cover the interview. After the restart, check that the assistant hears audio and that the meeting app still points at your headset.
Install the self-updating version
Get CoPilot Interview from the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 or 11 and run a practice question.
