After a Windows or macOS Update the Assistant Lost Permissions: Fixes

A major Windows or macOS update can reset microphone and screen recording permissions, change the default audio device, and occasionally leave an app without the authorization it had the day before, so your AI interview assistant may hear nothing after the update although you changed nothing. The fix is a five-minute check: privacy settings, default devices, re-authorize the app if asked, then press Ctrl+Shift+L (Cmd on a Mac) to start listening again.

Below is the checklist for each OS, what to do if you discover this during a call, and the one rule that avoids it: do not take OS updates the day before an interview.

What an OS update actually resets

Three things, in rough order of how often we see them. Permissions: macOS in particular re-asks for Screen Recording after a major version, and Windows 11 can flip the global microphone toggle or drop an app from its allowed list. Default devices: an update that touches audio drivers often promotes the laptop's own speakers and mic back to default, so the meeting plays somewhere the assistant is not listening. Trust: the app may need to be re-authorized once. None of these are faults in the app. The symptom, in every case, is identical to the assistant not hearing the interviewer.

macOS: the five-minute check

  1. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, Microphone. Confirm the assistant is listed and on.
  2. Open Screen & System Audio Recording in the same place. Confirm the assistant is on; this permission is what lets it hear the computer's audio output. If it is on but the app still hears nothing, toggle it off and on, then quit and reopen the app.
  3. Open System Settings, Sound. Set Output to your headphones and Input to your microphone. Updates often reset both to built-in.
  4. Open the meeting app and confirm its speaker and microphone match.
  5. Open the assistant, press Cmd+Shift+L, and play a video with speech. Captions should appear within a second or two.

If the permission toggles are grayed out or the app does not appear in the list, the macOS permissions guide covers removing and re-adding it.

Windows 11: the five-minute check

  1. Open Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone. Confirm Microphone access is on, Let apps access your microphone is on, and the assistant is allowed.
  2. Open Settings, System, Sound. Set Output and Input to the devices you tested with before the update. Click the output device and check its volume is not at zero.
  3. If a headset or dock is missing, unplug and replug it; a driver update can list devices under new names.
  4. Open the meeting app and set its speaker and microphone explicitly, not "Same as system".
  5. Open the assistant, press Ctrl+Shift+L, and play a video with speech. Confirm captions and an answer about 2 seconds after the speech pauses.

The Windows sound settings guide has the full tour of these panels.

If you discover it during the call

Answer from your preparation and fix it between questions. Say "let me think about that for a second," give your answer, and while the interviewer talks open Sound settings and move the output back to your headphones; that single change fixes the most common case in a few seconds. Leave permission changes that need the app reopened for a break between rounds. The interviewer sees none of this, since the assistant is not part of the meeting.

The rule, and the 2-minute test

Do not take OS updates the day before an interview. Pause Windows Update for a week from Settings, Windows Update, or turn off automatic macOS updates until the interview is over, then update and test. When you do update, run this test:

  1. Open the assistant and the meeting app with the headphones you will wear.
  2. Play a video with speech. Confirm captions and an answer.
  3. Say one sentence and confirm it is not captioned as a question.

Fold it into the setup checklist you already run before each interview.

Where CoPilot Interview fits

Our AI interview assistant needs microphone permission to hear you and, on macOS, screen recording permission to hear the computer's audio output; on Windows it needs microphone access and the correct default output device. Those are exactly the settings a major update is most likely to reset, so the checklist above is the whole fix. Practice with the AI mock interview first, use live help only where it is allowed, and follow your employer's rules on assistance. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my microphone permission reset after a macOS update?

Major macOS versions re-ask for sensitive permissions, especially Screen & System Audio Recording, and sometimes show an app as allowed while the grant is stale. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, toggle the assistant off and on under Microphone and Screen Recording, then quit and reopen it.

The assistant worked yesterday and hears nothing after a Windows update. Why?

The update most likely reset the default output or input device, or turned off microphone access for apps. Open Settings, System, Sound and re-select your headset and mic, then Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone and confirm the assistant is allowed. Press Ctrl+Shift+L to start listening.

Should I pause updates before an interview?

Yes. Do not take OS updates the day before an interview. Pause Windows Update for a week or disable automatic macOS updates until the interview is over, then update and run the two-minute test before relying on the assistant again.

Do I need to reinstall the assistant after an OS update?

Almost never. Permissions and default devices are what change, not the app. Re-grant the permissions, re-select your devices and press Ctrl+Shift+L. Reinstall only if the app itself refuses to open, which is a different problem.
