To install CoPilot Interview from the Microsoft Store, open the listing, click Get, and the app installs in one click with no SmartScreen warning and updates itself from then on. The Store build is version 1.3.17, the same as the direct download from copilotinterview.com. The direct .exe gives you the identical app but shows the standard SmartScreen "More info" step on first run, because it is a newer, less-downloaded installer. Both run on Windows 10 and 11 only; there is no Linux build. Below: which to pick, the install steps for each, the first-run checklist and a two-minute test.
Microsoft Store or direct download: which to pick
Both routes give you the same AI interview assistant at the same version, so the choice is about convenience and what your PC allows.
| Microsoft Store | Direct download (.exe) | |
|---|---|---|
| Version | 1.3.17 | 1.3.17 |
| Install | One click | Run the installer |
| SmartScreen | No warning | "More info" step on first run |
| Updates | Automatic through the Store | Download and run the new version |
| Windows | 10 and 11 | 10 and 11 |
Pick the Store unless the Store app is disabled or unavailable on your PC. Then use the direct download; it is the same software.
Install from the Microsoft Store
- Open the CoPilot Interview listing on the Microsoft Store, or open the Store app on your PC and search for CoPilot Interview.
- Click Get (or Install). The Store downloads and installs the app with no further prompts.
- Click Open when the button changes, or find CoPilot Interview in the Start menu.
- Right-click the Start menu entry and pin it to the taskbar so it is one click away on interview day.
From now on the Store keeps it current; you do not need to check for updates yourself.
Install with the direct download instead
- Go to the download section of copilotinterview.com and choose Windows.
- Run the installer. On first run, SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC" because the installer is new and has little download history. Click More info, confirm the file is the CoPilot Interview installer you just downloaded, then click Run anyway.
- Follow the prompts and open the app.
Only click Run anyway for a file you downloaded yourself from copilotinterview.com. Our Windows guide covers the SmartScreen screen in detail, and if a later update stalls, see what to do when an update is stuck.
First-run checklist
- Microphone permission. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone (Windows 10: Privacy > Microphone), turn on microphone access, and turn on the switch for desktop apps. The mock interview needs it to hear you.
- Output device. Set your headset as the default output in Settings > System > Sound, and point Zoom, Teams or Meet at the same device. The assistant captions the interviewer from the computer's audio output, so both must match. Our Windows sound settings guide walks through it.
- Account. None is needed for the Free plan, which gives 15 minutes of live help a day and includes AI mock interviews. Paid plans sign in with an email link, no password, so your plan follows you across devices.
Test it in two minutes
- Open Mock Interview, paste a job description and your resume, and answer two questions out loud. You should hear each question read aloud and get a score out of 10.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+L to start listening, play any video with speech, and confirm captions appear. Press Ctrl+Shift+A to ask for an answer.
If step 1 works but step 2 shows nothing, the output device does not match; recheck the sound settings. Our setup guide has the full test call with a friend.
Where CoPilot Interview fits
CoPilot Interview is a desktop AI interview assistant for Windows and macOS that runs as a separate window beside the meeting app, never joins the meeting and is not a participant. Use the mock interview to prepare, use live captions only where they are allowed, and follow your employer's rules on help during interviews. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
Is CoPilot Interview on the Microsoft Store?
Yes. The Microsoft Store listing installs CoPilot Interview 1.3.17 in one click, with no SmartScreen warning, and the Store updates it automatically. It is the same version as the direct download from copilotinterview.com and runs on Windows 10 and 11.
Why does the direct download show a SmartScreen warning when the Store version does not?
SmartScreen judges installers partly on download history. The direct .exe is a newer, less-downloaded file, so Windows shows the "More info" step on first run. The Store build is distributed through Microsoft's own channel, so no warning appears. Both contain the same 1.3.17 app.
Do I need a CoPilot Interview account after installing?
Not for the Free plan, which includes 15 minutes of live help a day in sessions of up to 15 minutes, plus AI mock interviews. An account is needed only for paid plans, so your plan follows you across devices. Sign-in is an email link with no password.
How do updates work for each version?
The Microsoft Store version updates itself in the background like any other Store app. The direct-download version is updated by downloading and running the newer installer from copilotinterview.com. Both are at version 1.3.17 today, and they are the same application.
Does CoPilot Interview run on Windows 10, or only Windows 11?
Both. The Store build and the direct download support Windows 10 and Windows 11. There is no Linux build, and it is not a browser extension. macOS 12 and later has its own direct download, and iPhone and Android have separate practice-focused companion apps.
