AI Interview Assistant Won't Open or Update After a New Version: Fixes

When an AI interview assistant will not open or update after a new version, one of three things has happened: the old process is still running and holding files, the installer stopped halfway, or a Microsoft Store install is waiting on a Store sign-in or a paused download. End the old process, run the installer again or press Get updates in the Store, and on a Mac re-unzip and re-grant permissions.

All of this takes under ten minutes, which is exactly why the rule is never to update within an hour of an interview. Fixes for each build follow, then how to make sure the next update is uneventful.

Why an update stalls

Desktop updates replace files the running app has open. If the app did not fully exit, the installer cannot overwrite them and either waits, errors or gives up, leaving a mix of old and new files that refuses to start. Store updates fail differently: the Store needs a Microsoft account signed in on the device and a download that is not paused by a metered connection or a battery saver. Version 1.3.17 is current for both the direct download and the Store on Windows; if the app shows an older number after an update, the update did not finish.

Direct download on Windows

  1. End the old process. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, find CoPilot Interview in Task Manager, and end it. Check the system tray for a lingering icon and quit from there too.
  2. Run the installer again. Download 1.3.17 fresh from copilotinterview.com rather than re-running a half-downloaded file. On first run you will see the standard SmartScreen "more info" step; click it, confirm the publisher, and continue.
  3. Restart Windows if the installer still complains about files in use. A restart releases every handle.
  4. Open the app and check the version against the changelog. Then press Ctrl+Shift+L and confirm it is listening.

Microsoft Store build on Windows

  1. Open the Microsoft Store app, go to Library, and press Get updates. A pending CoPilot Interview update appears there and installs in place.
  2. If the Store shows a sign-in prompt, sign in to the Microsoft account you installed with. Store updates do not run without it.
  3. If a download is stuck at a percentage, pause it, wait a few seconds and resume. Check that the connection is not marked metered, which pauses Store downloads by default.
  4. If the app still will not open, uninstall it from Settings, Apps, and reinstall from the Store listing. Your plan is tied to your sign-in email, not the install, so nothing is lost.

The Store install guide covers first-time setup and why the Store build updates itself without prompts.

macOS

  1. Quit the app fully (Cmd+Q, not just closing the window).
  2. Download the new zip, unzip it, and replace the old app in Applications.
  3. Open it. If macOS says it cannot verify the app or the window never appears, check System Settings, Privacy & Security, and re-grant Microphone and Screen Recording. A replaced app often needs its permissions confirmed again, and without screen recording it cannot hear the computer's audio.
  4. Press Cmd+Shift+L and confirm captions appear when you play a video with speech.

The Mac guide goes through each permission prompt in order.

If this is happening right before an interview

Stop fixing and start preparing. If the interview is within the hour, do not reinstall; open your notes and answer from your preparation. The assistant is a safety net, and a half-installed one is worse than none because it distracts you. If the old version still opens, use it; an update can wait until after the call. If nothing opens and you have time between rounds, the Store reinstall path above is the fastest route back.

The rule we tell everyone: never update within an hour of an interview, and test every update with a mock interview before relying on it live. Updates land on their own schedule; your interview does not. For other mid-interview failures, see what to do if your AI interview assistant stops working.

The 2-minute test after any update

  1. Open the app and confirm the version number matches the changelog.
  2. Play a video with speech and confirm captions appear and a structured answer follows in about 2 seconds.
  3. Press Ctrl+Shift+A (Cmd on a Mac) and confirm an on-demand answer arrives.
  4. Start a short AI mock interview and answer one question out loud, which checks the microphone path and your sign-in at the same time.

Where CoPilot Interview fits

Our AI interview assistant ships for Windows as a Microsoft Store app that updates itself and as a direct download, both at version 1.3.17, and for macOS 12 and later as a direct download. Your plan is tied to your email sign-in, so reinstalling never costs you anything. Practice with the AI mock interview first, use live help only where it is allowed, and follow your employer's rules on assistance. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my interview assistant open after an update?

Usually the old process was still running when the installer tried to replace its files, leaving a mix of versions. End the process in Task Manager, run the 1.3.17 installer again or press Get updates in the Microsoft Store, and restart if files are still reported in use.

The Microsoft Store update is stuck. What do I do?

Open the Store, go to Library and press Get updates. Make sure you are signed in to the Store with the account you installed from and that your connection is not metered. If the download stays stuck, pause and resume it, or uninstall and reinstall from the listing.

Will reinstalling lose my plan or settings?

Your plan is tied to your sign-in email, not to the install, so a reinstall never affects it. Transcripts are saved as text files in your Documents folder and survive a reinstall too.

Should I update right before an interview?

No. Never update within an hour of an interview. If a prompt appears, dismiss it and update afterward, then run a short mock interview to confirm captions, answers and your microphone before the next live call.

The app opens on my Mac but hears nothing after updating. Why?

A replaced app often needs its permissions confirmed again. Open System Settings, Privacy & Security, and re-grant Microphone and Screen Recording; the latter is what lets the app hear the computer's audio. Then press Cmd+Shift+L to start listening.

Test the update before it counts

Run a short mock interview after every update so the live call holds no surprises.
