What Happens When Your AI Interview Assistant Minutes Run Out Mid-Interview

When your minutes run out mid-interview, the live captions and answers stop, and you carry on from your own preparation. The call itself is unaffected: the assistant is a separate window that never joins the meeting, so nothing drops out of the call and the interviewer's screen does not change.

When your minutes run out mid-interview, the live captions and answers stop, and you carry on from your own preparation. The call itself is unaffected: the assistant is a separate window that never joins the meeting, so nothing drops out of the call and the interviewer's screen does not change.

It is an uncomfortable moment, but a recoverable one, and an avoidable one. Here is what actually happens, how to match your plan's session length to the interview before the day, how to top up, and what to do if the clock runs out anyway.

What actually happens when the time runs out

The assistant window stays open but stops producing captions and answers. Your microphone and the meeting keep working, because the assistant listens to your computer's audio output and your microphone and is not a participant in the call. There is no message to the interviewer and no change to their view.

What you lose is the live prompt. What you keep is everything you prepared: your stories, your notes, your knowledge of the role. If you have been practicing with mock interviews, you have answered questions like these out loud already, which is the point of practicing first.

Before the call: match session length to interview length

Most run-outs happen because a plan's session cap is shorter than the interview. Check the cap against the scheduled length the day before, not the minute before.

Pro and Pro+, $39.99 and $49.99 a monthUp to 70 minutesUnlimited, no gapRounds that run over, stacked days

Two details catch people. A 60-minute round that starts late and runs ten minutes over needs a 70-minute session. And a final-loop day with three one-hour blocks exceeds Standard's 100 minutes a day, so plan for Pro or Pro+. Our setup checklist has this as a line item.

Know your balance before you join

You do not need a dashboard to know where you stand. On the free plan it is 15 minutes today, in one session of up to 15 minutes. On a pack it is whatever you have not used since you bought it, and packs never expire. On Standard it is 100 minutes today in 60-minute sessions; on Pro and Pro+ it is unlimited sessions of 70 minutes.

Then open the app before the call, confirm it is listening with Ctrl+Shift+L (Cmd on macOS), and leave the window where you can see it. Start listening when the questions begin, not while you wait in the lobby; on a 15-minute allowance, lobby time is the most common reason the clock ends early.

Topping up: hour packs that never expire

If your interview is longer than your plan allows, buy time before the day. One-time hour packs cost $9.99 for 1 hour, with $29.99 and $49.99 packs as well; see the pricing page for the hours in each pack. They never expire, so a spare hour from this search waits for the next one.

If three or more hours of rounds fall in one month, a month of Standard at $24.99 costs less than packs; our hour packs vs subscription page has the break-even. Either way, buy the day before. Buying mid-call means leaving the interview to deal with a checkout, which is worse than finishing without captions.

During the call: keep going from your preparation

If captions stopped and you are not sure the clock was the reason, our guide on what to do if your assistant stops working covers audio, permissions and connection problems. And whatever plan you are on, follow your employer's rules on live help; where it is not permitted, use the assistant to prepare and leave it closed during the round.

Where CoPilot Interview fits

CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant that runs beside Zoom, Teams, Meet or any call app as a separate window, with live captions and a structured answer in about 2 seconds. The free plan's 15 minutes a day is where we suggest you start; packs and plans are for rounds the free session cannot cover.

Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when my AI interview assistant minutes run out during an interview?

The live captions and answers stop and you continue from your preparation. The call is unaffected because the assistant is a separate window that never joins the meeting; nothing drops out and the interviewer's view does not change.

How long is a session on each CoPilot Interview plan?

Free sessions run up to 15 minutes with 15 minutes a day. Standard sessions run up to 60 minutes, up to 100 minutes a day. Pro and Pro+ sessions run up to 70 minutes with unlimited sessions and no gap between them.

Can I buy more minutes mid-interview?

Technically yes, but we advise against it: leaving an interview to complete a purchase is worse than finishing without captions. Buy a one-time hour pack from $9.99 the day before, or take a month of Standard at $24.99 if several rounds fall in one month.

Do hour packs expire if I do not use them?

No. Hour packs are one-time purchases that never expire, so time left after one interview is available for the next, even months later. The $29.99 and $49.99 packs' hours are listed on the pricing page.

Check your session length before the call

Match the plan to the interview the day before; the free plan covers practice and short screens.
