How to Prepare for a TCS Interview: NQT, Rounds and Sample Answers (2026)

The best way to prepare for a TCS interview is to plan for the whole path: most freshers start with the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT), and candidates who clear it commonly describe technical, managerial and HR interviews, sometimes all on one day. Steps vary by role, location, country and team, and experienced hires usually go straight to interviews.

TCS, Tata Consultancy Services, is one of India's largest IT services employers and hires freshers from many degrees. Nobody outside TCS can tell you a guaranteed NQT cut-off, so prepare broadly. Our Big 4 and IT services interview guide compares TCS with similar firms.

TCS interview process after the NQT

As candidates and job postings commonly describe it:

  1. Register for the NQT through the TCS careers pages or your college.
  2. TCS NQT: an online test covering aptitude, reasoning, English and, for some roles, programming.
  3. Technical interview: programming, databases, your project and your strongest subject.
  4. Managerial interview: workplace situations, teamwork, pressure and flexibility.
  5. HR interview: background, relocation, shifts and documents.
  6. Offer letter and joining.

Test sections and the hiring tracks offered to freshers change from year to year, so read the current official notice before you start.

What the managerial round is really testing

The managerial round surprises many freshers. It usually explores how you would act in work situations: a teammate who does not deliver, a client who changes requirements, a deadline you cannot meet. Interviewers want a calm, honest process, not a perfect answer.

A useful pattern is to say what you would do first, who you would inform, and what you would learn. Avoid blaming others, and do not offer "I will work all night" as your only plan.

TCS stages and what to practice

TCS interview questions with sample answers

Commonly reported questions include "Introduce yourself", "Which programming language are you comfortable with?", "What is normalization?", "What was your role in the project?", "What if your lead assigns work outside your skills?" and "Are you ready to relocate?"

"What is normalization?" "Normalization is organizing database tables to reduce repeated data and avoid update errors. For example, instead of storing a customer's address in every order row, I keep customers in one table and orders in another, linked by customer ID. First, second and third normal forms are the usual steps, and most practical designs aim for third normal form."

"Your lead gives you work in a technology you do not know." "I would accept it and be honest that I am starting from the basics. I would ask for project documents, spend the first evening on fundamentals, and split the task into small parts so I could show progress early. If I was stuck for more than a few hours, I would ask a teammate instead of staying silent. That is how I learned Python during my internship."

"Are you ready to relocate to any TCS location?" "Yes. I have discussed it with my parents and they support it. I lived in a hostel for four years of college, so living away from home is not new. If there is a choice I would prefer Hyderabad, as it is closer to my family, but I will join wherever I am placed and settle in quickly."

Your seven-day TCS plan

  1. Day 1: Read the current NQT or interview notice on the TCS careers pages and list the sections.
  2. Day 2: Timed aptitude and reasoning practice, then English reading.
  3. Day 3: Revise technical basics: OOP, SQL, normalization and one language.
  4. Day 4: Prepare your project story: problem, your role, a difficulty and the result.
  5. Day 5: Answer three managerial scenarios out loud.
  6. Day 6: A full mock interview covering technical, managerial and HR questions.
  7. Day 7: Arrange mark sheets, ID and certificates; test your camera if the interview is online.

Where CoPilot Interview fits

The NQT is a test, so prepare for it beforehand and use nothing during it. For the interviews, our AI interview assistant helps you practice: in an AI mock interview you paste the job description and your resume, and an AI interviewer reads questions aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10, with what worked, what to improve and a model answer. Mock interviews and 15 minutes of live help every day are free, and in low- and middle-income countries, including India, the pricing page shows a regional price: Standard is $14.99 a month there instead of the US price of $24.99.

Live help is only for interviews where it is allowed; follow your employer's rules. If you are also applying elsewhere, our Wipro interview process guide is a close comparison. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the TCS NQT?

The TCS National Qualifier Test is an online test TCS uses for fresher hiring. Candidates describe sections on aptitude, reasoning and English, plus programming for some roles. Sections, timing and any cut-off are set by TCS and can change, so read the official notice on the TCS careers pages.

How many interview rounds does TCS have?

Freshers commonly describe three: technical, managerial and HR. They may happen in one session with one or more panel members, or on separate days. Experienced hires often have a technical round with the project team followed by managerial and HR discussions.

Is the TCS HR interview easy?

It is usually conversational, but it is still an assessment. Expect questions about relocation, shifts, family support, documents and why TCS. Clear, honest answers matter more than polished English. If you do not know something, say so calmly and offer what you do know.

Does TCS charge money for interviews or offer letters?

Legitimate employers do not ask candidates to pay for tests, interviews, training or offer letters. If an email or caller asks for a fee to confirm a TCS job, treat it as a scam, do not pay, and check openings only on the official TCS careers pages.
