Big 4 interview preparation splits into two kinds of stage: the ones an AI interview assistant can help you rehearse and, where the firm allows it, support live (competency interviews with a person, the manager round, the partner round), and the ones where it is practice-only because the assessment measures you alone (online tests, recorded one-way video interviews, group exercises). Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG run similar funnels under different labels. Below is the stage-by-stage view, the competency questions with outlines, notes on firm values, and a practice plan.
The Big 4 process stage by stage
Labels vary by firm and country, but the shape is the same; the right-hand column is where an AI tool belongs.
| Stage | Format | AI help |
|---|---|---|
| Application and screening | CV, academics, eligibility questions | A resume builder for the CV; nothing in the forms |
| Online tests | Numerical, verbal, situational judgment, game-based | Practice only; the test terms require unaided completion |
| Recorded video interview | One-way, timed answers to set questions | Practice only; rehearse timed answers until fluent |
| Assessment center or group exercise | Case, group discussion, presentation, written task | Practice only; rehearse the case frame and presentation |
| Competency or manager interview | Live, with a person | Rehearse; live help only where the firm's rules allow |
| Partner or final interview | Live; commercial awareness and fit | Rehearse; live help only where the firm's rules allow |
Our assessment center guide covers the group day; the UK Big Four guide covers UK timelines and formats.
Big 4 competency questions with answer outlines
Nine questions that appear in some form at all four firms, each with the order of a strong answer.
- Why this firm and not the other three? One service line, one program or specialism, one person you met or event you attended, one firm-specific fact you can defend.
- Why audit (or tax, or consulting)? What the work is in your own words, what you would learn in two years, one honest downside you accept.
- Tell me about working in a team under pressure. Your specific role, the point where it nearly failed, what you changed, the result.
- Describe delivering bad news to someone senior. Facts first, the options, your recommendation, how you followed up.
- Three deadlines collide. How do you prioritize? Impact and dependencies first, negotiate the one that can move, tell everyone early.
- Tell me about a mistake you made. Own it in one sentence, the fix, the control you added so it does not repeat.
- What business story interested you recently? Something from the last month, why it matters to the firm's clients, a view of your own.
- How would rising interest rates affect our clients? Debt costs and going-concern questions for audit, valuation changes for deals, cash-flow stress for smaller clients.
- Explain what an audit is for, to someone outside finance. Independent assurance that the numbers can be relied on by people who cannot check them themselves.
Firm values and how to use them
Each firm publishes a short set of values and expects you to have read it. KPMG lists Integrity, Excellence, Courage, Together and For Better; PwC's are act with integrity, make a difference, care, work together and reimagine the possible; EY frames its purpose as building a better working world; Deloitte publishes five shared values. Check the current wording on each firm's site before the interview.
Do not recite them. Map one real story to each value and let the interviewer make the connection. For the technical rounds on the audit path, our accountant interview guide and auditors and compliance guide go deeper.
A practice plan built on the AI mock interview
In the AI mock interview you paste the job description and your resume, choose the level and the mix, and an AI interviewer asks questions built from your resume, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what worked, what to improve and a model answer.
- Day 1: "why this firm" and "why this service line," until each is under ninety seconds.
- Day 2: four competency stories at two minutes each.
- Day 3: recorded-video rehearsal: answer set questions against a timer with your camera on.
- Day 4: commercial awareness: two business stories and the interest-rate question.
- Day 5: a full mixed round with partner-style follow-ups.
For the group exercise there is no substitute for a live practice group; the mock helps with the presentation only.
Policy: tests, recorded interviews and live rounds
Online tests and recorded video interviews come with terms that require you to complete them alone, and the firms say they check. Treat them as practice-only stages and close every tool before you start. In live interviews, follow your employer's rules and the firm's candidate guidance; if the invitation is silent, ask the recruiter rather than assume.
Verify yourself anything an AI tells you about auditing or tax standards, and every detail you state about the firm; models blur the four firms together.

Frequently asked questions
How do I prepare for a Big 4 interview?
Learn the stages for your firm and country, practice the online tests alone, rehearse timed answers for the recorded video interview, prepare four competency stories with results, read the firm's values and recent news, and make "why this firm" specific.
What are the stages of the Big 4 recruitment process?
Typically an online application, online tests (numerical, verbal, situational judgment or game-based), a recorded video interview, an assessment center or group exercise, and one or two live interviews with a manager and a partner.
Can I use an AI interview assistant in a Big 4 online test or video interview?
No. Online tests and recorded video interviews carry terms that require unaided completion, and the firms check. Use an assistant to practice beforehand; in live interviews with a person, follow the firm's candidate guidance and ask the recruiter if it is not stated.
How do I answer "why this firm" at Deloitte, PwC, EY or KPMG?
Name one service line, one program or specialism, one person you met or event you attended, and one firm-specific fact you can defend if challenged. Avoid anything that would be equally true of the other three firms.
