AI Interview Assistant for Assessment Centres: Group Exercises, Presentations and Interviews

An AI interview assistant helps with assessment centre preparation for two of the day's components, the competency interview and the presentation, and is no use for the rest: group exercises, in-tray tasks, role plays and anything done in a room with assessors watching. If the centre is run virtually, the organizer's rules on software apply to the whole day, and some platforms ask you to close everything else.

Below is a component-by-component guide to where the assistant fits and where it does not. We use the UK spelling of “centre” because the format and the search term are mostly British.

What an assessment centre is

An assessment centre is a half-day or full-day selection event in which several candidates complete a set of exercises, each scored by trained assessors against the same competency framework. A typical day mixes a group exercise, a written or case-study task, a presentation, a competency interview and sometimes aptitude tests, with a lunch where you are also, informally, being observed. It is standard for UK graduate schemes, many public-sector entry routes and some senior hires, and since 2020 a growing share run on video. Our assessment centre guide describes a typical timetable.

Component by component

ComponentWhat happensAI assistant helpsAI assistant cannot
Competency interviewPanel asks one question per competency, scores against indicatorsMock interview per competency; live captions on video where allowedNothing in an in-person room
Presentation10 minutes on a set topic, then questionsRehearsing out loud; challenge questions; Q&A captions on video where allowedHelp during the delivery
Group exerciseSix to eight candidates solve a problem while assessors watchNothingAnything; it is live, in a group, often in person
Case study or in-trayWritten task against the clockPractice beforehand with a chat modelAnything during the task
Role playOne-to-one scenario with an actorRehearsing scenario answersAnything live
Aptitude testsNumerical, verbal, logical, timedNothingAnything

The pattern is simple: an AI assistant is useful where you prepare spoken answers alone and useless where the exercise is live, shared or written. Group interviews explains what assessors mark in the group exercise.

Eight questions you will meet across the day

A practice plan for the spoken components

  1. Competency interview. Paste the scheme's job description and your resume into the AI mock interview, add the published competency framework, choose a behavioral mix, and answer one question per competency out loud. Each spoken answer is scored out of 10 with what worked, what to improve and a model answer. Our competency-based interview page has the full routine.
  2. Presentation. Rehearse the ten minutes out loud with a timer three times, then run a mock interview with a focus such as “challenge the recommendations in my presentation about X” to practice the questions.
  3. Group exercise and role play. Practice with people. Three friends and a printed brief is the best rehearsal, because the marks are for listening, inviting others in and summarizing.

For graduate applicants, graduate scheme interviews covers the motivation questions that come up in the interview component.

Virtual assessment centres and the rules

A virtual assessment centre runs the same exercises over a video platform, often with a dedicated assessment system for tests and written tasks. Organizers typically send rules in advance: camera on throughout, no other applications, sometimes a browser lockdown for the tests. Those rules cover the interview component too. Read them and follow your employer's rules for the whole day. Where the rules permit outside tools during the interview, live captions help you hear each competency question precisely; where they do not, the preparation above is still fully available.

In person, nothing changes about preparation and nothing from this page applies on the day.

Where CoPilot Interview fits

CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant whose mock interview, free, is the right tool for the interview and presentation components of an assessment centre, and the wrong tool for everything else on the timetable. Most applicants need nothing beyond the free plan for this.

Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI interview assistant help with an assessment centre?

For two components: the competency interview and the presentation, both of which you can rehearse out loud with an AI mock interviewer. It does not help with group exercises, role plays, written tasks or aptitude tests.

Can I use an AI assistant during a virtual assessment centre?

Only if the organizer's rules allow it, and most virtual centres ask you to close other applications for the day. Read the rules you were sent and follow your employer's rules. Use the assistant for preparation beforehand.

How do I prepare for the group exercise?

With people, not software. Assessors mark listening, bringing others in, building on ideas and summarizing. Rehearse with three friends and a printed brief, and practice being the person who keeps time and checks the group answered the question.

What is being scored in the assessment centre interview?

The same competencies as the rest of the day, usually from a published framework. Each answer is scored against written indicators for one competency, so prepare one STAR story per competency with your own actions and a measurable result.

Do I need a paid plan to prepare for an assessment centre?

No. AI mock interviews are included on the free plan, and they cover the interview and presentation rehearsal that an assistant is useful for. The other components are prepared with people and a printed brief.

Rehearse the interview component

The AI mock interview asks competency questions aloud and scores each spoken answer, free.
