Why mod APKs of interview apps are risky

What a modified APK can do with interview permissions
A genuine interview app needs your microphone to hear you and, on desktop, system audio to hear the interviewer. In a modified app, the same permission can record continuously, upload audio to an unknown server, and run while you think the app is closed. Interview conversations contain your name, employers, salary expectations and sometimes confidential details about your current job. Combined with access to your contacts or accounts, that is enough for targeted fraud. Android warns about some of this, but repackagers routinely strip signatures and evade simple checks.
How to tell an official APK from a modified one
Some legitimate apps are distributed as APKs outside Google Play, especially during betas. That makes provenance the key question.
- Download only from the developer's own domain over HTTPS, linked from their official website — never from APK mirror or “mod” sites.
- Check the package name and developer shown in Android's app info against what the official site states.
- Keep Google Play Protect on; it scans sideloaded apps and flags known threats.
- Be suspicious of “premium unlocked”, “pro free” or “no ads” labels; developers do not distribute those.
- Watch requested permissions: an interview app has no reason to read your SMS or contacts.

If you already installed one
- Uninstall the app and run a Play Protect scan.
- Change the password of any account you signed in with inside the app, and turn on two-factor authentication.
- Review which apps have microphone and accessibility permissions in Android settings, and revoke anything unfamiliar.
- Watch your email and bank accounts for unusual activity for the next few weeks.
- If the phone behaves oddly afterwards — battery drain, pop-ups, unknown apps — back up your data and factory reset.
Desktop “cracked” versions carry the same risks
The same logic applies to cracked Windows or macOS builds of interview apps. A cracked desktop app with system audio and screen recording access can see and hear everything on your computer, including password managers and work email. On a Mac, bypassing Gatekeeper to open an unsigned modified app removes one of the main protections macOS has.
