How does CoPilot Interview work? The four modes, scoring and privacy flow

A step-by-step look at install, Mock Interview scoring, the live caption-to-answer flow, the phone companion and what happens to your audio, with the limits.

How does CoPilot Interview work? It's a desktop app for Windows 10+ and macOS 12+ that runs in its own window, listens to your computer's audio, and uses AI models in one of four modes: Mock Interview interviews you from your résumé and the job description and scores each spoken answer out of 10, while Candidate Mode shows live captions of a question and then a structured answer in about 2 seconds. The other two modes are Interviewer Mode for hiring managers and the Resume Builder.

Disclosure: we make CoPilot Interview. This page sticks to how the product works, including what it can't do. For the one-page product overview, see the AI interview assistant page.

How does CoPilot Interview work? The short version

  1. Install: download, unzip and run. No signup is needed to start.
  2. Pick a mode: Mock Interview, Candidate Mode, Interviewer Mode or Resume Builder.
  3. The app listens to your computer's audio (and your microphone when you answer a mock question) and turns speech into text.
  4. An AI model you choose generates the next step: a scored review of your answer, a structured answer, or a tailored résumé.
  5. Your session files are saved in your own Documents folder.

It runs beside Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. Because it works from your computer's audio, it works alongside any call app that plays sound through your computer, and it doesn't rely on an official integration with any of them. It is not a browser extension.

Step 1: install and start

On Windows you download CoPilot_Interview_Setup.zip; on macOS, CoPilot Interview.zip. Unzip it, run it, and you're on the free plan: 15 free minutes every day, sessions up to 15 minutes, the free AI models and all four modes. There's no account to create first and no card. If you can't install software, the browser AI mock interview needs nothing installed and has 113 real questions across 9 tracks: behavioral, system design, coding, data science and ML, frontend, DevOps, SQL, product and security.

How Mock Interview works and how it scores you

Mock Interview is the practice mode, and it's where most people should start.

  1. Add your résumé and the job description. The interview is built from both, so the questions match the role you applied for.
  2. Set it up. Choose the level, how many questions (3, 5 or 8), the mix (behavioral, technical, system design, coding), your coding language and an optional focus.
  3. Listen. The app reads each question aloud, like a real interviewer.
  4. Answer out loud. It listens to your spoken answer. Coding questions never auto-submit, so you can think in silence.
  5. Read the score. Each answer is scored out of 10, with what to fix and a model answer.
  6. Review the report card at the end of the round, then run the weakest questions again.

The score is a coaching signal, not a prediction of a hiring decision. If you want to understand what AI scores can and can't tell you, read how AI interview assistants score answers, and for building practice around a real listing, see running a mock interview from a job description.

How the live flow works, in about 2 seconds

Candidate Mode is the live mode. Follow the rules of the employer or assessment you're in — many people use it only to practice, which works on the free plan.

  1. Captions: the app shows live captions of the interviewer's question as it's spoken, from your computer's audio.
  2. Answer: about 2 seconds after the question, a structured answer appears in the app's window.
  3. Two views if you want them: Dual AI Mode lets two models answer side by side, out of 9 AI models in total.
  4. Coding questions: coding mode gives complete code in your chosen language, its complexity and an example run.
  5. Your words: the answer is a starting point; you decide what to say.

It supports 50+ languages. Candidate Mode doesn't read your résumé; personalization from your résumé and the job description happens in Mock Interview and the Resume Builder. For live captions on their own, see live captions for interviews.

What happens to your audio and data

From the site FAQ and the privacy policy, here is the path your audio takes:

  1. The app streams audio in short encrypted segments through our proxy to a speech-to-text model.
  2. The question text is sent to the AI model you chose.
  3. The answer comes back to the app on your computer.
  4. Session files stay in your own Documents folder.
  5. Nothing is kept on our servers beyond the request.
Tip: Before you use any AI tool that hears your calls, read its privacy policy for where audio goes and how long it's kept. Our guide to AI interview assistant privacy lists the questions to ask.

Limits, and who it suits

Limits:

It suits you if you want spoken practice built from a real job description, scored answer by answer, for free every day; you prepare for technical rounds and want coding and system design questions in the same mock; or you'd rather practice on your own schedule than book a partner. It suits you less if you want a video course or a human coach. For who makes the app and how refunds work, read is CoPilot Interview legit.
