"AI interview software" is not a market. It is a label stretched across at least six product categories that share a word and almost nothing else — different buyers, different users, different pricing shapes, different failure modes. A recruiting director evaluating async screening and a job seeker looking for practice tools are both told they are shopping in the same category, and neither is well served by the comparison. This is a map of the space rather than a ranking of vendors.

Two ground rules for this page. First, we build a candidate-side copilot, so we have a stake in one of these six segments and have tried to describe the others without editorialising. Second, and more importantly: this page does not publish market-size estimates, growth rates, funding figures, or market-share statistics. 1. Candidate-side real-time assistants and copilots

What it does. Runs on the candidate's own machine during a live interview with a human interviewer. It transcribes the question and surfaces a private outline or reference the candidate can glance at while answering in their own words. It does not participate in the call and produces no output anyone else sees.

Who buys it. Individual job seekers, spending their own money over a search window measured in weeks, not years. That single fact shapes everything about the segment: pricing must be low, onboarding must be instant, and there is no procurement cycle.

Pricing. Consumer subscription, usually monthly with a free tier or free plan. CoPilot Interview sits in this segment; so do tools like Final Round AI and Sensei AI, named here purely as category examples.

2. Candidate-side practice and mock-interview tools

What it does. Simulates an interview for rehearsal. The tool plays interviewer, asks role-relevant questions, and gives feedback on structure, filler words, pacing, or content. Some generate question sets from a pasted job description; some record you and play it back.

Who buys it. Individual job seekers, plus a meaningful institutional channel — university career centres, bootcamps, and outplacement firms buy seats in bulk for cohorts.

Pricing. Consumer subscription or credit packs for individuals; annual site licences for institutions, where the buying process looks more like edtech than recruiting software.

How to evaluate. Question realism for the specific role matters more than volume — a thousand generic prompts is worse than forty that match your target job. Then look at whether feedback is specific and actionable or a vague delivery score, whether it handles technical as well as behavioural rounds, and whether you can practise the same story repeatedly and see it tighten.

3. Employer-side AI interviewers and async video screening

What it does. Conducts a first-round screen on the employer's behalf. The candidate completes a recorded video, chat, or automated voice session, often on their own schedule with a per-question timer. The system transcribes, structures the responses against a rubric, and hands recruiters a summary, a score, or a shortlist. HireVue is the reference example most people know; several ATS vendors have shipped comparable capability.

Who buys it. Talent acquisition leaders and recruiting operations at organisations with high applicant volume — retail, hospitality, call centres, graduate schemes, large-scale technical funnels.

Pricing. B2B, commonly per interview, per hire, or an annual platform fee with volume tiers, usually with implementation involvement and an annual commitment.

How to evaluate. Ask what the system outputs and how much weight that output carries. Whether a human reviews every result before rejection. How the rubric was built and validated. What bias auditing exists and who performed it. What data is retained, for how long, and where. Whether candidates are told the screen is automated and offered an alternative process on request. 4. Employer-side interview intelligence and note-taking

What it does. Sits in on a human-to-human interview and records, transcribes, and summarises it. Output goes into a scorecard or the ATS so the hiring team debriefs from a shared record instead of competing memories. Metaview and BrightHire are commonly cited examples; general-purpose meeting recorders are increasingly used the same way.

Who buys it. Recruiting teams and hiring managers who want interviewer consistency and faster debriefs. The pitch is assistive rather than evaluative — it helps humans decide rather than deciding for them, which puts it in a different regulatory and reputational position than segment 3.

Pricing. Per seat, monthly or annual, sometimes with a floor on interviewer count.

How to evaluate. Candidate consent flow first — recording a person requires notice and, in many places, consent. Then transcription accuracy across accents, whether summaries map to your actual scorecard structure, ATS write-back quality, retention policy, and whether interviewers use it or quietly go back to their own notes.

5. ATS-integrated scheduling and workflow

What it does. The least glamorous and arguably most-used segment. Coordinates panels across calendars, handles reschedules, sends reminders, routes candidates through stages, and keeps the applicant tracking system current. The AI here is mostly optimisation and drafting rather than assessment.

Who buys it. Recruiting coordinators and HR operations — the people whose day is consumed by logistics.

Pricing. Per seat, or increasingly bundled into the ATS itself as native features absorb what were standalone products.

How to evaluate. Depth of ATS and calendar integration is nearly the whole story; a scheduling tool that does not write back cleanly creates more work than it saves. Then reschedule handling, timezone and panel-complexity support, and candidate-facing experience.

6. Coding-assessment platforms

What it does. Evaluates technical skill through code — take-home tasks, timed challenges, or a shared live editor with playback and test execution. AI features layered on top typically generate problems, summarise a submission's approach, or flag unusual submission patterns. HackerRank and CoderPad are long-standing examples of the two ends of this segment.

Who buys it. Engineering hiring managers and technical recruiting teams.

Pricing. Per assessment or candidate-volume tiers; live-collaboration products often price per interviewer seat.

How to evaluate. Whether the problems predict job performance rather than puzzle familiarity is the hard question and the one most buyers skip. Then language and framework coverage, whether candidates can use their real tooling, how AI-assisted submissions are handled as a policy question rather than a detection one, and candidate experience — strong engineers abandon assessments that feel like hazing.

Three directions look plausible from the outside, offered as observation rather than forecast. Second, real-time capability: as low-latency speech and language models get cheaper, features that once required a recorded session are moving into live conversation on both sides of the table.
