What Is an AI Interview Copilot? What the Term Means and How It Is Used

The copilot metaphor, practice vs live use, and a plain guide to the products that share the name.

An AI interview copilot is candidate-side software that works beside you during interview practice or a live interview: it turns the question into text, uses a language model to suggest a structured answer, and leaves the actual answering to you. The term names the same category of tool as an AI interview assistant.

The word carries a promise: the software assists, and you stay in charge. It also causes confusion, because "copilot" appears in several unrelated product names. This page explains where the term comes from, sorts out the names and shows how to use a copilot well.

Where the "copilot" in AI interview copilot comes from

In aviation, the copilot is the second pilot. They share the workload, watch the instruments and run checklists, while the captain stays in command. Software makers borrowed the idea for AI that works alongside a person instead of replacing them.

A widely known early use is GitHub Copilot, which GitHub announced as a technical preview on June 29, 2021 and described as an "AI pair programmer" (GitHub's announcement). Microsoft has since used the Copilot name for its own AI assistant. Interview tools picked up the word for the same reason: the AI suggests, and the candidate decides what to say.

Which "copilot" is which

"Interview copilot" can mean the general category or a specific product. Here is how the names line up as of October 2026.

How an AI interview copilot works: practice vs live use

Under the hood, a copilot runs the same pipeline as any AI interview assistant: speech-to-text turns the question into text, a large language model writes a structured answer, and the tool shows it in a window you can read at a glance. What changes is when you use it.

Follow the rules of the employer or assessment you're in — many people use it only to practice, which works on the free plan. Online assessments and AI-interviewer sessions are practice topics only: take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand.

Example: a copilot in a practice round

Example (we wrote this; it isn't copied output from any tool). You're preparing for a product analyst role and ask the copilot to interview you from the job description.

  1. Question, read aloud: "How would you measure whether a new onboarding flow is working?"
  2. Your spoken answer: you name sign-up completion as the main metric but skip how you'd compare the new flow with the old one.
  3. Feedback: what worked (a clear primary metric), what to tighten (say how you'd run the comparison and which guardrail metric you'd watch) and the follow-up to expect ("What if completion rises but week-one retention falls?").
  4. Your redo: you answer again in your own words and compare the two scores.

The copilot's value here is the loop: question, answer, specific fix, second try.
