One-Week AI Interview Practice Plan: 7 Days of Scored Practice

A day-by-day plan using Mock Interview (scored out of 10), the free browser demo and the STAR story builder, with a score log. Fits in 15 free minutes a day.

A good AI interview practice plan fits into one week of short daily sessions: a scored baseline on day 1, a story bank on day 2, one scoring skill a day from day 3 to day 6 (answering first, results, the time limit, follow-ups), then a dress rehearsal and a re-score on day 7. Each day needs about 15 minutes of spoken practice plus a little writing, which matches the CoPilot Interview free plan: 15 free minutes every day, no card and no signup, with Mock Interview scoring each spoken answer out of 10.

The plan trains what AI scoring tends to reward: answering the question asked, clear structure, specific evidence and your own words. Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand. If your interview is tomorrow, use the AI interview prep checklist instead.

Writing tasks, such as drafting stories, happen outside your 15 minutes. The minutes are for speaking.

Before day 1: gather four things (10 minutes)

Days 1 to 3: baseline, story bank and answering first

Day 1: take a baseline

Start with one question in the free AI interview demo, which has 145 real interview questions across 10 tracks, graded by AI, so the format feels familiar. Then run a 3-question Mock Interview with no preparation. In the desktop app you choose the level, the number of questions (3, 5 or 8) and the mix of behavioral, technical, system design and coding. It reads each question aloud, listens to your spoken answer and scores it out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer, then gives you a report card. Write down each score and fix note. Don't try to improve yet; you need an honest starting point.

Day 2: build your story bank

Write six stories in the free STAR story builder: a deadline, a conflict, a mistake, a decision with incomplete information, leading without authority, and a result you're proud of. Keep only three bullets per story: headline, key action, result. Then run a short mock round and try two of the new stories. For how STAR changes when a transcript is scored, see the STAR method for AI interviews.

Day 3: answer in your first sentence

Today's only goal is that the first sentence of every answer answers the question. Run a behavioral round and check each opening line.

Days 4 to 6: results, the time limit and follow-ups

Day 4: end every answer on a result

Re-answer your lowest-scoring question from day 1, then do a new round. Every answer must end on an outcome: a number, time saved, a scale or a change someone noticed. If you're short on numbers, see how to quantify results in interview answers.

Day 5: fit the time limit

Set your phone timer to the limit in your invitation, or 2 minutes if none is given, and record three answers on camera. Each should finish with 15 to 30 seconds to spare. If you run over, cut the setup, never the result. Our guide to one-way video interview time limits has a timing table for 1-, 2-, 3- and 5-minute limits. Finish with one mock round to check that the shorter answers still score well.

Day 6: prepare for follow-ups and the platform

Conversational AI interviewers ask follow-ups. After each mock answer, ask yourself "How exactly?" and "What would you do differently?" and answer out loud. More in how to handle AI interviewer follow-up questions. Then use the platform's own practice if it offers one. As of October 2026:

Practice questions are not the same as retakes of the real interview. Treat the official attempt as the real one.

Day 7: dress rehearsal and re-score

  1. Use day 1's settings. The same job description, level and number of questions, so the comparison is fair.
  2. Use your real setup. The device, headset, room and lighting you'll use for the interview.
  3. Answer without a script. If the employer allows notes, keep them to a few bullets.
  4. Compare with day 1. Look at the scores and, more usefully, whether the same fix note keeps coming back.
  5. Pick two reminders for the day. For example, "answer first" and "say the result before extra detail."

How to track your scores across the week

A simple log shows whether the plan is working. This example uses made-up numbers to show the format:

DayQuestionsScores out of 10 (example)Repeated fix noteNext focus
135, 6, 4"No clear result"Story bank
336, 7, 6"Opening is slow"Results
437, 7, 6"Result is vague"Timing
738, 7, 8None repeatedRest before the interview

Scores move around with the question, so watch the repeated fix note more than any single score. For a fuller template, see how to track interview practice progress. Every spoken session in this plan runs on the free plan of our free AI interview assistant, with Mock Interview scoring each answer out of 10.

Tip: Keep each day to one goal. With one change at a time, you can tell which change moved your score.

FAQ

How long should I practice for an AI interview?

One week of short daily sessions covers the basics: a baseline, a story bank, four focused skills and a re-score. About 15 minutes of spoken practice a day, plus some writing, fits this plan.

Can I follow this AI interview practice plan for free?

Yes. The CoPilot Interview free plan includes 15 free minutes every day with all four modes, including Mock Interview, with no card and no signup. The browser demo and the STAR story builder are also free.

What if I only have three days?

Compress the plan: day 1 for a baseline and your story bank, day 2 for answering first and ending on results, day 3 for the time limit and a dress rehearsal. With less than a day, use a prep checklist instead.

How do I know if my practice is working?

Re-run day 1's settings on day 7 and compare. A repeated fix note disappearing is a better sign than any single score, because scores move around with the question.

Should I also practice on the employer's platform?

If it offers practice questions, yes. As of October 2026, HireVue recommends trying practice questions and Mercor says its practice interviews are not shared with companies. Don't use official retakes as practice.

Does this plan help if a human interviews me with an AI note-taker?

Yes. Notes and summaries are written from what you say, so answering first, naming your own actions and stating results clearly help in that format too. Day 6, on follow-ups, matters most with a human interviewer.
