Monzo's interview process usually starts with a recruiter call and an initial call, moves to one or two role-specific stages (for engineers, a take-home or pair-coding exercise and a systems design interview; for credit roles, a case study and a role-specific interview), and ends with a one-hour behavioural interview before a hiring committee decides. Monzo publishes detailed interview guides for several teams on its own blog, and it is clear that AI is fine for preparation but not for use live in the interview.
This guide brings those published guides together as of October 2026, shows how the stages differ by team, and gives you practice questions and an example answer. Monzo notes that its processes can change, so the job posting and your recruiter have the final word. For the wider UK context, start with our job interview tips for the UK.
Monzo backend engineering interview, stage by stage
Monzo's backend engineering interview guide (published 1 March 2025) describes a recruiter call followed by four interview stages:
| Stage | Format | What Monzo assesses |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiter call | Conversation about Monzo's mission and the role | Mutual fit; Monzo says it will always share the outcome or next steps |
| Initial call | One hour with fellow engineers; no whiteboarding or live code | A recent project you had real input on: implementation details, trade-offs and what you would change |
| Coding exercise | Your choice: a take-home program with a README and a review call, or a pair-coding session against pre-written unit tests (described as 45 minutes to an hour) | Idiomatic, well-structured code that meets the spec; not speed, puzzles or language trivia |
| Systems design | Design a system for a hypothetical, non-Monzo problem in a shared whiteboard tool | Reasoning about performance, consistency and availability, edge cases and assumptions |
| Behavioural | One-hour video call with two engineers or engineering managers | Communication, learning, teamwork and delivering projects |
| Decision | A hiring committee reviews all the feedback | The offer, a check for bias, and which team fits your skills and goals |
A few details from the guide are worth acting on. In the coding exercise, extra features earn no bonus points, documentation and search are allowed, and you do not have to finish everything. In systems design, interviewers may add new information that forces a change, and diagram neatness is not judged; Monzo suggests reasoning from first principles rather than reciting textbook answers, and being ready to justify any technology you name. Our guides to the take-home assignment interview and the system design interview cover both formats in more depth.
How do Monzo's mobile and credit interviews differ?
Mobile engineering
Monzo's mobile interview guide (29 January 2025) adds written application questions about customer-centric apps, a technical challenge you faced and why you want to join. The initial call is an hour with an engineer and involves no coding. You then choose a take-home task with a four-hour timebox and no submission deadline, followed by a 45-minute review call, or a one-hour pair-coding session using your own setup. The final stages are a one-hour behavioural interview with two interviewers built around four questions about specific past experiences, and a one-hour mobile systems design interview with two mobile engineers.
Credit and other business roles
Monzo's credit interview guide (9 September 2026) lists a 30-minute recruiter call, a 45-minute initial call with a credit risk manager or team lead, a 60-minute case study, a 60-minute role-specific interview and a 60-minute Values and Collaboration interview, plus a 60-minute leadership interview for senior (L50 and above) roles. The case study is a commercial scenario set outside banking, in four progressive sections; Monzo asks you to bring a pen, paper and a calculator. If case work is new to you, read our guide to what a case interview is.
What does Monzo's behavioural interview assess?
Every published Monzo process ends with a behavioural interview, and it carries real weight. For engineers, Monzo names four areas: communication, learning, teamwork and delivering projects at pace. For credit roles, the Values and Collaboration interview covers four pillars:
- Communication: explaining complex ideas clearly to non-specialists.
- Stakeholder management and collaboration: competing priorities, pushback and building alignment across teams.
- Adaptability and flexibility: spotting problems outside your remit and stepping in.
- Integrity and ownership: customer-focused, ethical decisions when goals conflict.
Monzo's own advice across the guides is consistent: use STAR (its AI guide mentions STARR, which adds a reflection at the end), be clear about what you personally did rather than what the team did, explain the alternatives you considered, and prepare a project that did not go to plan and how you corrected course. Saying "I don't know" is acceptable if you then reason it through. Our STAR method guide shows how to structure answers that hold up to follow-up questions.
Can you use AI in a Monzo interview?
For preparation, yes. During the interview, no. Monzo's guide to using AI in its hiring (30 July 2024) sets the rule as "refine, not replace":
- Applications: AI for spelling, formatting and improving the phrasing of real examples is fine; inventing examples is not.
- Interview preparation: AI for research, practice questions based on the job description and framing answers in STARR format is fine.
- Live interviews: Monzo says "please do not use AI live in the interview". Its backend guide repeats that AI tools may be used for preparation but not during interviews.
- Take-home or live tasks: the same principle applies; check with your recruiter if you are unsure.
- Adjustments: if you rely on an AI tool such as a note-taker, tell your recruiter before the interview.
Follow the rules of the employer or assessment you're in — many people use CoPilot Interview only to practise, which works on the free plan. Monzo's guidance explicitly welcomes practising with questions based on the job description, which is what a mock interview does.
Monzo practice questions
These are practice questions we wrote around the areas Monzo publishes. They are not questions reported from Monzo interviews.
- Walk me through a recent project you had significant input on. What would you change if you built it again?
- Tell me about a time you explained a technical trade-off to someone outside engineering.
- Describe a project that did not go to plan. How did you notice, and what did you do?
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with a stakeholder's priority. How did you reach alignment?
- Describe something you learned quickly because a project needed it.
- Tell me about a time you made a decision that put the customer ahead of a target.
- Design a service that sends a notification when a payment arrives. Where could it fail?
Example answer we wrote (to "Tell me about a time you explained a technical trade-off to someone outside engineering"): "Our operations lead wanted instant refunds for every disputed card payment. I explained the trade-off in her terms: instant refunds would cut customer wait times from three days to minutes, but about one in twenty disputes later turns out to be invalid, and we would be absorbing those losses. I proposed instant refunds under £50, where the risk was small, and the normal review above that. She agreed, complaints about refund speed fell sharply over the next quarter, and losses stayed inside the budget we set. What I learned was to lead with the customer impact and the cost, not the system design."
Practise these out loud, because Monzo's behavioural round is a conversation with follow-ups. CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview builds questions from your CV and the job description, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what worked, what to fix and a model answer, with 15 free minutes a day and no account. You can also try the browser AI mock interview with nothing to install. If you are interviewing across London fintech, compare with our Revolut interview process guide.

How many interview stages does Monzo have?
It depends on the team. Monzo's backend engineering guide describes a recruiter call plus four stages: an initial call, a coding exercise, systems design and a behavioural interview. Its credit guide lists five or six stages, including a case study and a Values and Collaboration interview.
Does Monzo ask LeetCode-style questions?
Not in the backend process it describes. Monzo says its coding exercise is not a speed test, a LeetCode-style puzzle or a language-trivia test; it looks for idiomatic, well-structured code that meets the spec.
Can I choose between a take-home and pair coding at Monzo?
Yes, in the engineering processes Monzo has published. You choose either a take-home exercise followed by a review call, or a live pair-coding session with a Monzo engineer.
Can I use AI during a Monzo interview?
No. Monzo says you can use AI to research, practise and refine real examples, but asks candidates not to use AI live in the interview. If you need an AI tool such as a note-taker as an adjustment, tell your recruiter beforehand.
Who decides whether I get a Monzo offer?
Monzo's backend guide says a hiring committee reviews all the interview feedback together, makes the offer decision, checks for bias and considers which team best fits your skills and goals.
What is STARR in Monzo's guidance?
Monzo's AI guide mentions framing answers in STARR format, which commonly means Situation, Task, Action, Result and Reflection. Its other guides recommend STAR. Either way, end with what you learned.
