Logistics coordinator interviews test whether you can keep shipments moving when carriers, customs and warehouses all have their own problems: tracking and exceptions, documentation, carrier management, cost control and clear communication with customers who want to know where their freight is. Expect a scenario about a delayed or lost shipment and a question about the systems you have used. Wider context is in interview help for supply chain and logistics roles; the buying side is in procurement specialist interview questions. This page gives 10 questions with what a strong answer contains, 3 sample answers you can adapt, a table of the rounds to expect, and a practice plan for the week before.

Logistics coordinator interview questions and what strong answers contain
- A shipment is delayed and the customer is calling. What do you do? Get the facts from the carrier, give the customer a real update and a next update time, work the options (reroute, expedite, partial), document.
- Walk me through booking and tracking a shipment end to end. Order, mode and carrier selection, booking, documents, pickup, tracking, exceptions, delivery, invoice reconciliation.
- What documentation do you prepare for international shipments? Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or airway bill, certificates of origin, customs declarations; accuracy and Incoterms.
- How do you choose a carrier for a given shipment? Service level, transit time, cost, reliability history, equipment, insurance.
- How do you control freight costs? Consolidation, mode optimization, rate negotiation, invoice audit, avoiding accessorial charges.
- Describe a time you resolved a lost or damaged shipment. Claim process, evidence, customer communication, the outcome, prevention.
- Which systems have you used? TMS, WMS, ERP, carrier portals; what you did in each.
- How do you prioritize during peak season? Service-level commitments first, visibility boards, pre-booking capacity, communicating early.
- How do you work with warehouse and customer service teams? Shared status, clear handoffs, daily huddles, feeding back recurring issues.
- Tell me about an error you made and what changed. Specific, owned, with the process fix.
Sample answers
A shipment is delayed and the customer is calling.
I call the carrier before I call the customer back, so I have facts: where the freight is, why, and the new ETA. Then I give the customer that information plainly and a time I will update them again, even if the news is bad. While they wait, I work the options: expedite from the terminal, split the shipment, or pull stock from another location. Last winter a snowstorm held a truckload for two days; we shipped a partial by air for the urgent lines and the customer kept their production schedule.
How do you control freight costs?
Consolidating less-than-truckload shipments into fuller loads on fixed days saved about eight percent on one lane. I audit carrier invoices against the quote every week because accessorials creep in. And I challenge the default mode: a surprising amount of 'urgent' air freight is not urgent once you ask the customer.
Describe resolving a lost shipment.
A pallet went missing between a cross-dock and the destination. I pulled the scan history, found the last scan, got the terminal to search, and filed the claim the same day with photos and the signed bill of lading. The customer got a replacement from stock within 48 hours, and the carrier paid the claim. I added a pallet-count check at the cross-dock.
Mistakes to avoid
- Scenario answers that forget to update the customer.
- Vague documentation answers for international work.
- Cost control described only as negotiating rates.
- Blaming carriers without describing what you did.
A practice plan for the week before
- List your modes, volumes, systems and lanes with numbers.
- Write stories for a delay, a loss or damage, a cost saving, a peak-season crunch and an error.
- Review the documentation and Incoterms relevant to the company's shipments.
- Run a mock interview from the posting and answer aloud; end every scenario with the customer informed.
- Prepare questions about volumes, carriers, systems and peak season; the support-side view is in operations support specialist interview questions.
