Legal assistant interviews test the mix of administrative reliability and substantive support that the title covers: organising case files and discovery, drafting routine documents, tracking deadlines, researching under an attorney's direction, client contact without giving advice, and billing your time accurately. Expect scenarios, a question about the line between your role and the attorney's, and often a drafting or proofreading test. The broader guide to this interview is interview help for paralegals and legal assistants; the neighbouring roles are covered in paralegal interview questions and legal secretary interview questions. This page gives 10 questions with what a strong answer contains, 3 sample answers you can adapt, a table of the rounds to expect, and a practice plan for the week before.
What the interview looks like
| Round | What happens | Prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | Practice areas, firm size, software (document management, e-discovery, billing), education or certificate, schedule | Practice areas and systems with honest levels |
| Attorney or paralegal manager interview | Case organisation, drafting, deadlines, research, client contact, billing, ethics, behavioral | Scenario answers that respect the attorney's role and name the deadline |
| Drafting or proofreading test | Draft a letter or summarise a document; proof a pleading | Practise a clear one-page case summary |
Legal assistant interview questions and what strong answers contain
- How do you organise a case file from intake to close? Index, pleadings, correspondence, discovery, evidence, billing; naming conventions; the document management system.
- Walk me through preparing a document production. Collect, review for responsiveness and privilege under attorney direction, Bates number, log, produce in the required format, keep the record.
- How do you track deadlines across many matters? Master calendar, rules-based deadline calculation, internal deadlines, weekly review with the attorney.
- A client asks you whether they should accept a settlement offer. What do you say? Cannot advise, take the question to the attorney, set a callback, document the contact.
- How do you research a question an attorney gives you? Clarify the question and the jurisdiction, primary sources, note the date and the sources, summarise with citations, flag uncertainty.
- How do you record your billable time accurately? Contemporaneous entries, task descriptions the client can read, the firm's increments, no padding.
- Describe a time you caught an error in a document before it went out. What, how, what changed.
- How do you handle an attorney who gives unclear instructions? Repeat back, ask the two questions that matter, confirm in writing, deliver a draft early.
- What do you do if you notice something that might be an ethics problem? Raise it with the supervising attorney or the firm's designated person, document, do not ignore it.
- Why legal work, and where do you want it to lead? A real reason; paralegal certificate, law school, a practice area.
Sample answers
A client asks you whether they should accept a settlement offer.
I tell them honestly that I am not able to give legal advice and that it is exactly the question the attorney should answer, and I make sure they do not feel brushed off: I take down their question and concerns in detail, tell them when the attorney will call, and put the note in the file and in the attorney's inbox before I do anything else. Clients ask assistants because we are easier to reach; the way to serve them is to get them the right answer fast, not to guess.
Walk me through preparing a document production.
I start from the request and the attorney's instructions on scope. I collect from the sources identified, run the review under the attorney's direction for responsiveness and privilege, with anything doubtful flagged rather than decided by me. Responsive documents are Bates-numbered, privileged ones go on the log with the reason, and I produce in the format the request or the agreement specifies. I keep a record of exactly what was produced and when, because the question always comes up months later.
How do you handle an attorney who gives unclear instructions?
I repeat back what I understood in one or two sentences and ask the two questions that change the work most: the deadline and the audience. Then I confirm by email so there is a record, and I send a partial draft early rather than a finished product late, because a wrong direction caught at thirty percent costs an hour and one caught at a hundred costs a day.
Mistakes to avoid
- Anything resembling legal advice to a client.
- Production answers that skip privilege or the record.
- Vague billing habits.
- Treating ethics concerns as someone else's problem.
A practice plan for the week before
- Rehearse the case-file, production and client-advice answers aloud.
- Write a one-page sample case summary to practise the test format.
- Write stories for an error caught, unclear instructions and a deadline save.
- Run a mock interview from the posting and answer aloud.
- Prepare questions about practice areas, the ratio of administrative to substantive work and software.
