Paralegal interviews test substantive knowledge for the practice area, how you manage deadlines where a missed date is malpractice, how you handle confidential and privileged material, how you draft and research, and how you work with attorneys who are busy and sometimes short. Expect a writing or research exercise and questions about specific systems. Role-specific preparation is in AI interview help for paralegals and legal assistants; the attorney-side interview is covered in AI interview help for legal interviews, and the confidentiality answer in how do you handle confidential information. This page gives 10 questions with what a strong answer contains, 3 sample answers you can adapt, a table of the rounds to expect, and a practice plan for the week before.

- How do you manage deadlines and calendaring? Docketing system, rules-based dates, double entry, reminders, confirming with the attorney.

- How do you handle privileged or confidential documents? Need to know, secure handling, privilege logs, clean desk, no discussion outside, careful with email.
- Walk me through preparing a document production or a closing binder. Scope, collection, review, logging, Bates or indexing, quality check, delivery.
- How do you research a question of law or procedure? Secondary sources first, primary authority, checking currency, summarising for the attorney.
- How do you work with an attorney who is short with you under pressure? Do not take it personally, get what they need, raise patterns later.
- Tell me about a mistake you made and how you handled it. Specific, disclosed promptly, fixed, process changed.

Sample answers
You discover a filing deadline is tomorrow and the attorney does not know.
I walk into their office, or call, within the minute: here is the deadline, here is what we have, here is what is missing. Then I start assembling the filing while they decide how to handle it. I would never sit on it hoping to fix it quietly, because the attorney may need to seek an extension today. Afterwards I look at why it was not calendared and fix that, because the system failed, not just the day.
How do you handle a client who wants legal advice from you?
I listen first, because an upset client mostly wants to be heard. Then I say plainly that I cannot give legal advice but I can tell them where their matter stands and get their question to the attorney today. I write up the call with their exact question and send it to the attorney within the hour, and I follow up to make sure the client heard back. The client feels taken care of and nobody has crossed a line.
Tell me about a mistake you made.
I sent a draft to opposing counsel with internal comments still in the document's metadata. I realised within minutes and told the attorney immediately. We assessed what was exposed, which was limited, and she decided how to handle it. Since then every outgoing document goes through a metadata scrub as a checklist step, and I have taught it to two newer paralegals.
Mistakes to avoid
- Vague deadline answers; name the docketing system and the double check.
- Hiding a missed deadline or an error.
- Giving legal advice in a scenario answer.
- Overstating practice-area depth.
A practice plan for the week before
- Rehearse your calendaring system and your privilege-handling rules aloud.
- Write stories for a deadline crisis, a mistake, a difficult attorney moment, an upset client and a production or closing you ran.
- Practice a short writing exercise: summarise a document in one page.
- Run a mock interview from the posting and answer aloud.
- Prepare questions about caseload, billable expectations, systems and supervision.
