An interview AI assistant is software that listens to interview questions and helps you answer them, either in practice, where it scores you afterwards, or live, where it shows an answer during the call. The same words in the other order, AI interview assistant, mean the same thing, and search engines treat them as one topic.
This page is a buyer's guide rather than a definition: the three kinds you will meet, the five things to check before you choose one, the red flags, and where CoPilot Interview sits. For the plain definition, read what is an AI interview assistant.
The three kinds of interview AI assistant
- Practice assistants simulate an interview before it happens: an AI interviewer asks questions, often built from your resume, and scores your spoken answers with feedback and a model answer. No policy question arises.
- Live assistants work during the real call: they caption the interviewer's question from the computer's audio and show a structured answer within a couple of seconds. They are useful only where the employer allows them.
- Hiring-side assistants help the interviewer rather than the candidate: generating questions, scoring answers and writing evaluation reports. They raise consent, bias and data-retention questions for the employer.
Most products are one kind. A few, including CoPilot Interview, are the first two with a hiring-side mode added. AI interview tools: the six types widens this to question banks, answer generators and AI interviewers.
Five things to check before you choose
| Check | Why it matters | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| 1. How it hears the call | A browser tab cannot hear the Zoom or Teams desktop app; microphone capture picks up echo | A desktop app that reads the computer's audio output and never joins the meeting |
| 2. Speed to a usable answer | Help that arrives after you have started talking is a transcript, not help | A structured answer in about 2 seconds, which you can verify on the free plan |
| 3. What free includes | Many free tiers are one-off trials; practice may be paywalled | A daily allowance that resets, mock interviews included, no card |
| 4. Where your audio and transcript go | You are handing over your voice, your resume and the interviewer's words | Audio not stored on the vendor's servers; transcript saved on your own machine; a named model provider |
| 5. Platform and install path | Clones and unsigned installers are common in this category | A named publisher, a store listing or a signed download, and a website that matches |
How to choose an AI interview copilot expands each check into questions to ask a vendor.
What the prices tell you, and what they do not
The spread is wide. As of October 25, 2026, monthly prices in this category ran from Hedy at $12.99 to Interview Coder at $299, with Final Round AI at $25, Cluely at $19.99 and Sensei AI at $89 in between. CoPilot Interview is $0 on the free plan, $24.99 for Standard, $39.99 for Pro and $49.99 for Pro+, with a $9.99 hour pack that never expires.
Monthly price alone tells you little, because the products differ in kind: a $299 tool and a $12.99 tool may be a live assistant and a practice coach. Decide which kind you need first, then compare prices within it. Which AI interview assistant should I choose? walks through that decision.
Red flags
- No publisher name, no company address and no support contact anywhere on the site.
- A countdown timer on a lifetime deal, or an "original price" several times the asking price.
- Marketing built around not being noticed rather than around answer quality. The policy question is the employer's to set, and a vendor that waves it away is telling you something.
- No free way to test the answer flow before paying.
- No statement about where audio and transcripts go.
- App-store listings whose screenshots show a generic chatbot. How to spot fake AI interview assistant apps has eight checks.
Rules before features
Practice comes first and carries no restriction. Live help is for interviews where it is allowed: some employers permit it, some require disclosure and some prohibit it, especially in assessments. Ask when the rule is unwritten, and follow your employer's rules. A good tool is useful as a practice coach even if you never use the live part.
Where CoPilot Interview fits
CoPilot Interview is a desktop AI interview assistant for Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 12 and later, made by NeuraSense AI LLC. Against the five checks: it reads the computer's audio output and never joins the meeting; it returns a structured answer in about 2 seconds; the free plan includes AI mock interviews and 15 minutes of live help a day with no card; audio is streamed in short segments for transcription and not stored on our servers, with a text transcript saved only in your Documents folder; and it is published under our name on the Microsoft Store and as a direct download.
Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
What is an interview AI assistant?
Software that listens to interview questions and helps you answer them, either in practice, where it scores your spoken answers afterwards, or live, where it shows a structured answer during the call. It is the same thing as an AI interview assistant; only the word order differs.
What are the main kinds of interview AI assistant?
Three: practice assistants that run scored mock interviews, live assistants that caption the call and answer in about two seconds, and hiring-side assistants that help interviewers generate questions, score answers and write reports. Some products combine the first two.
What should I check before choosing one?
How it hears the call, how fast a usable answer arrives, what the free tier really includes, where your audio and transcript go, and whether the publisher and install path are legitimate. Verify speed yourself on the free plan rather than trusting a claim.
How much do interview AI assistants cost?
As of October 25, 2026, from $12.99 a month (Hedy) to $299 a month (Interview Coder). CoPilot Interview is free with a daily cap, $24.99 for Standard, $39.99 for Pro and $49.99 for Pro+, with a $9.99 hour pack that never expires.
Is it allowed to use one in an interview?
Practice is always fine. Live use depends on the employer: some allow it, some require disclosure and some prohibit it. Check the invitation, ask the recruiter if nothing is written, and follow your employer's rules.
