How Long Should Answers Be in an AI Interview? Timing by Question Type

Most answers land best at 60 to 120 seconds. Here is how to fit the time limit, structure a behavioral answer and time yourself.

How long should answers be in an AI interview? For most questions, aim for 60 to 120 seconds: long enough for one specific example with your actions and a result, short enough to stay inside the time limit and keep the transcript focused. Go shorter for factual screening questions, and use two to three minutes only when the question asks for depth and the limit allows it.

Time limits are set by the employer, not by a universal rule. HireVue's 2026 explainability statement lists the response time per question as configurable from 30 seconds to 15 minutes or unlimited, with three minutes recommended to employers, and preparation time from 0 to 5 minutes, with one minute recommended (as of October 2026). Its candidate FAQ says you get "several minutes to respond to each question" and that most video-based assessments have five to eight questions. Always plan from the settings on your own screen.

These ranges are our guidance for spoken answers, not any vendor's rule. If your screen shows a shorter limit, the limit wins.

Factual screening (availability, work authorization, notice period)10–20 secondsThe direct answer plus one useful detail

Why focused answers tend to score better than long ones

A 90–120 second structure for behavioral answers

TimePartWhat to say
0:00–0:15Situation and taskOne or two sentences: where you were, what was at stake, what you owned
0:15–1:15ActionsThree steps in order, with "I" for what you did and a reason for each
1:15–1:40ResultWhat changed, with a number if you have one, and what you learned
1:40–2:00Link to the role (optional)One sentence connecting the skill to this job

Example answer (we wrote this; about 90 seconds at a calm pace). Question: "Tell me about a time you handled a difficult customer."

"At a regional internet provider, I handled escalated support calls. A small-business customer had lost service three times in one week and called to cancel. My job was to keep the account by fixing the real cause, not just apologizing. First, I let him walk through the whole history without interrupting, then summarized it back so he knew I had it right. That calmed the call down, because he had already explained it to two other agents. Second, I pulled the outage logs for his line and the lines near it, and saw that all three drops lined up with a faulty card at the local hub, not his equipment. Third, I booked a technician for the next morning, gave him my direct extension and called back after the repair to confirm the line was stable. I also added a note to his account so the next agent would see the full history. He stayed, and the hub repair also stopped repeat complaints from four other customers on the same card. Since then, I check for patterns across tickets before treating a complaint as a one-off."

That's about 190 words. Setup takes three sentences, the three actions take most of the time, and the answer ends on a result and a lesson. For a deeper look at timing each STAR section, see how long a STAR answer should be.

Before and after: trimming a three-minute answer

Long version (example)Tight version (example)
"So, to give you some context, I've been in support for about six years, and before this company I was at a telecom, and the culture there was really different...""At a regional internet provider, I handled escalated support calls."
"We tried a bunch of things, we had meetings, we talked to the network team, and eventually somebody figured out it was the hub.""I pulled the outage logs and saw that all three drops lined up with a faulty card at the local hub."
"In the end it all worked out and he was happy, which was great.""He stayed, and the hub repair also stopped repeat complaints from four other customers."

Cut in this order: backstory, then any action you didn't personally take, then repetition. Never cut the result. More drills are in how to stop rambling in interviews.

How to fit the time limit in a one-way video interview

  1. Read the settings first. Spark Hire's candidate help center says you're told the think time, takes and time limit before each question starts, and that the time limit is your answer's maximum, which you don't need to use in full (as of October 2026).
  2. Use think time to choose three things: the story, your first sentence and your result. Don't script the rest.
  3. Plan to finish with 10 to 15 seconds to spare. That's our rule of thumb; it protects your result if you speak slower on camera.
  4. Glance at the timer once, halfway. If more than half the time is gone and you're still on the situation, skip straight to your actions.
  5. If time is nearly up, say the result now. "The result was..." in one sentence beats a cut-off sentence.
  6. Don't fill leftover time. Stop after your closing line. A clear ending at 1:30 beats repetition until 3:00.

How to time yourself in practice

  1. Find your pace. Read a 150-word paragraph aloud with a stopwatch. That tells you roughly how many words fit in your 90 seconds.
  2. Time each story. Say it out loud and note two timestamps: when you say your first action verb and when you reach the result. If the first action comes after 30 seconds, your setup is too long.
  3. Draft with limits built in. The free STAR story builder keeps each part short.
  4. Run scored rounds. Our free AI interview assistant includes a Mock Interview mode that builds questions from your résumé and the job description, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer. You choose 3, 5 or 8 questions and the mix, and the free plan includes 15 minutes every day. The free AI interview demo adds 145 real interview questions across 10 tracks, graded by AI, in your browser.

FAQ

How long should an AI interview answer be?

For most questions, 60 to 120 seconds. Keep factual screening answers to 10 to 20 seconds, and use two to three minutes only for technical or deep-dive questions when the time limit allows. The limit on your screen always wins.

Is it bad to finish early in a one-way video interview?

No. The time limit is a maximum, and Spark Hire, for example, says you don't need to use the full amount. Finishing with a clear result is better than filling the time with repetition.

What happens if I run out of time?

The recording usually stops at the limit, so whatever you hadn't said is lost. If you see time running low, say your result in one sentence. Check whether you have another take before you submit.

Can an answer be too short for AI scoring?

Yes. HireVue says that when its AI can't detect enough content in a response, it isn't scored by AI and is flagged for human review instead. A 20-second behavioral answer rarely shows your actions and a result.

How many words is a two-minute answer?

Roughly 250 to 300 words for most people at a calm pace, but it varies. Time yourself reading a short paragraph aloud to find your own pace rather than counting words.

How long does a whole AI interview take?

It depends on the platform and the employer. HireVue says most video-based assessments take under 20 to 30 minutes, and Mercor says most of its AI interviews take about 20 minutes (both as of October 2026).
