Automated interviewers draw on a surprisingly small bank of questions, because they are built from the same screening logic employers have always used: a self-introduction, motivation, two or three situational or competency questions tied to the role, a few role-knowledge checks and the logistics. What changes is the scoring, which reads your transcript against criteria rather than listening for charm. Below are the questions by type with what the scoring looks for in each, and how to rehearse them aloud. How these systems work is explained in what is an AI interviewer and how employers use AI to score interviews.
Self-introduction and motivation
| Question | What the scoring looks for | Answer shape |
|---|---|---|
| Tell me about yourself | Relevance, structure, length | Present role, two relevant achievements, why this role; 60 to 90 seconds; see tell me about yourself in an AI interview |
| Why do you want this job? | Specificity about the role and company | One reason about the work, one about the employer, both concrete |
| Why are you leaving your current role? | Positivity, consistency | One forward-looking sentence |
| What do you know about us? | Research | Two specifics, plainly stated |
| Where do you see yourself in a few years? | Realism, alignment | A plausible path through this role |
Situational and competency questions
- Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult customer or colleague. Scored for a specific situation, your actions, a resolution.
- Describe a time you worked under pressure or met a tight deadline. Scored for method and outcome.
- Give an example of working in a team. Scored for your specific contribution.
- Tell me about a mistake and what you learned. Scored for ownership and change.
- What would you do if a customer asked for something against policy? Scored for policy awareness and tone.
- How do you prioritise when everything is urgent? Scored for a method.
- Describe a time you showed initiative. Scored for action beyond the role.
- These answers are scored on completeness: a situation, what you did, what happened. Missing any part costs points regardless of how well the rest was said.
Role knowledge and logistics
- Role knowledge: definitions and procedures for the job, from food-safety steps to a coding concept to a nursing protocol; scored for accuracy and completeness, so give the full answer rather than the short one.
- Availability and shifts: scored for a direct answer that matches the posting.
- Salary expectations: scored for a number or range, consistent with your application.
- Start date, notice period, location, authorisation: one sentence each.
- Do you have any questions? Some systems record this; have one ready.
How to rehearse for the format
- Write a 60- to 90-second answer for each question above that applies to your role, with a situation, your actions and a result where relevant.
- Say them aloud with a timer; the common failure is finishing in twenty seconds and the rarer one is running over; see how long answers should be in an AI interview.
- Speak in complete sentences and pause after the prompt ends; transcription is the scorer's only input.
- Run a full mock with an AI interviewer that reads questions aloud and scores answers, in the room and setup you will use.
- Keep your answers consistent with your application and with earlier rounds; some systems compare them.
