Bar raiser interview preparation with an AI interview assistant comes down to one drill: two stories per Leadership Principle, each rehearsed out loud against a chain of five “why” follow-ups until the data, your personal role and what you would change come out without hesitation. The Bar Raiser is a trained interviewer from outside the hiring team who can veto the hire, and the round is a deep probe of the principles rather than of your skills. Amazon's candidate guidance has restricted the use of AI tools during interviews, so treat the live assistant as a practice tool for this round and read your invitation for the rule that applies to you.
What a Bar Raiser interview is
A Bar Raiser is an Amazon interviewer trained in the company's hiring process, drawn from a different team than the one hiring, and given the power to veto a hire the hiring manager wants to make. Their job is to keep the standard above the current average of the team. In the loop, their round looks like any other behavioral interview, but the follow-ups go deeper and they are listening for specific Leadership Principles rather than general competence. For the structure of the full loop, read what a Bar Raiser interview is.
How Bar Raisers dig
Three lines of questioning do most of the work:
- Data. “How much?” “Over what period?” “How did you measure it?”
- Your role versus the team's. “What did you personally do?” “Who made that decision?” “What would have happened if you were not there?”
- What you would change. “Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?”
The five-why chain is the shape of the whole round: each answer earns a “why?” or “how do you know?” until the Bar Raiser reaches a specific action you took and a measured result. A story that survives five whys has data, a personal decision and a lesson in it.
Eight Bar Raiser questions by principle
- Customer Obsession: “Tell me about a time you made a decision a customer would have liked but your team did not.”
- Ownership: “Describe a problem that was outside your remit and what you did about it.”
- Dive Deep: “Tell me about a time the data told a different story from what everyone believed.”
- Bias for Action: “Give an example of a decision you made with 70 percent of the information.”
- Earn Trust: “Tell me about a time you were wrong in front of your team.”
- Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit: “Describe disagreeing with your manager. What happened after the decision went against you?”
- Deliver Results: “Tell me about a goal you missed.”
- Insist on the Highest Standards: “Give an example of rejecting work that was good enough.”
All sixteen principles are in Amazon Leadership Principles, all 16.
A practice plan with the AI mock interview
- Build a story bank: two stories per principle, each written as situation, your action, the number, the lesson. Many stories cover more than one principle; aim for roughly 20 distinct stories.
- Paste the job description and your resume into the AI mock interview, pick the level and a behavioral mix, and add a focus such as “Amazon Leadership Principles, follow every answer with why and how do you know”.
- Answer out loud. Each spoken answer is scored out of 10 with what worked, what to improve and a model answer. Track which follow-up breaks each story.
- Fix the break, usually the missing number or the “we” that should be “I”, and rerun until five whys reach no gap.
| Follow-up | What the Bar Raiser wants | Tell that you are not ready |
|---|---|---|
| “How much?” | A number with a baseline | “Significantly” or “a lot” |
| “What did you do?” | A decision you made alone | “We decided…” |
| “What would you change?” | A specific different action | “Nothing, it worked” |
| “Why did that matter?” | Link to a customer or business outcome | Stops at the technical result |

Live use and Amazon's rules
Where an employer permits outside tools, the live value in a principle-based interview is mapping: the captions show the question's exact wording, and the structured answer names the principle it most likely targets, so you pick the right story from the bank. Ctrl+Shift+Q (Cmd+Shift+Q on macOS) adds a “why” the interviewer tacks on mid-answer.
Amazon is the clearest case where this is not the plan. Its candidate communications have stated that AI tools are not to be used during interviews, and the invitation you receive is the authority on what applies to you. Read it and follow your employer's rules. For a Bar Raiser round, the story bank and the mock interview do the work in advance, and nothing runs during the call.
Where CoPilot Interview fits
CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant whose mock interview, included on the free plan, is the part that matters for a Bar Raiser round: it scores your spoken answers out of 10, so you find the story that breaks under “why?” at home rather than in the loop.
Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Bar Raiser at Amazon?
A trained interviewer from outside the hiring team who joins the loop to keep the hiring standard above the team's current average. The Bar Raiser probes Leadership Principles with deep follow-ups and can veto the hire.
How many stories do I need for a Bar Raiser interview?
Aim for two per Leadership Principle, about 20 distinct stories once overlaps are counted. Each should carry a number, a decision you made personally and a lesson, because those are what the follow-ups go after.
Can I use an AI interview assistant live in an Amazon interview?
Amazon's candidate guidance has restricted the use of AI tools during interviews, and your invitation is the authority. Read it and follow your employer's rules. Plan on mock interviews beforehand and nothing during the call.
What does the Bar Raiser ask that other interviewers do not?
The same questions, pushed further: how much, over what period, what you personally did, who decided, and what you would change. Expect four or five follow-ups on one story rather than five stories.
Which Leadership Principles does the Bar Raiser focus on?
Each interviewer in the loop is assigned principles, and the Bar Raiser's set varies. Prepare all sixteen, with extra depth on Ownership, Dive Deep, Earn Trust and Have Backbone, which produce the hardest follow-ups.
