Do not use an AI interview assistant during a proctored assessment. You accept the test's rules when you start, the proctoring software records your screen and camera, and a breach can void your application and, at some companies, bar you from reapplying. Use the assistant before the test to prepare, which is where it helps most anyway.
This page explains what proctoring is, what you agree to when you click start, what is at stake, and the legitimate way to use an AI interview assistant for a proctored test: before and after it, never during.
What a proctored assessment is
A proctored assessment is a timed test where software or a person monitors you, and starting it means accepting its rules. Online assessments for large employers, coding tests on platforms such as Codility, and many graduate-scheme tests are proctored.
Monitoring typically includes webcam recording, screen recording, a locked-down browser or a check for other open applications, identity verification, and review by a person or an automated flagging system afterward. Some record audio as well. The point is not to trick you; it is to make the result comparable across thousands of candidates.
What you agree to when you click start
Before the test begins you are shown terms and usually an honor statement. They commonly include: no outside help, no other people in the room, no second device, no other applications, and no AI tools. Clicking start is your agreement to those terms. An AI interview assistant is outside help by any plain reading, and most honor statements now name AI tools explicitly.
We write this as engineers, not lawyers, and it is not legal advice. But the ethical point does not need a lawyer: you gave your word when you started the test, and the employer is trusting it.
What is at stake
| Consequence | How it happens |
|---|---|
| Flagged result | Automated review marks the session; a person then reviews the recording |
| Voided application | The employer withdraws you from the process without an interview |
| Reapplication ban | Some large employers record a breach and decline future applications for a fixed period |
| Rescinded offer | A breach discovered later, including during a reference or background check, can end an accepted offer |
Employers also compare assessment results with live performance in later rounds, and shared editors keep editing history, which our page on coding interview plagiarism detection describes. The consistent lesson is to follow your employer's rules on every stage, and a proctored test has the clearest rules of all.
The legitimate path: prepare, then take the test alone
Everything an AI interview assistant does well for an assessment happens before it.
- Learn the format. Read our guides to the Amazon online assessment and the Codility test so the structure holds no surprises.
- Run timed practice sets. Work problems under the real time limit with nothing open, exactly as the test will be.
- Review afterward with Coding mode. Compare your attempt with a solution, its Big-O and its edge cases, and redo the problems you missed.
- Practice talking through solutions with AI mock interviews using a coding mix, since the live rounds that follow a passed assessment often ask you to explain your approach. Mock interviews are included on the free plan; our page on how to practice for an AI interview for free has a schedule.
Then close every tool and take the test as the terms require.
After the assessment
Once the test is submitted, the restrictions end. Write down the problems you struggled with while they are fresh, work them again with Coding mode, and prepare for the live rounds that usually follow. Those rounds may have a different AI policy; some employers allow AI in later interviews and say so in the invite. Ask the recruiter when the policy is unclear, and follow the answer.
If you did not pass, the same preparation loop is what raises the next score. The assistant cannot take the test for you, and it should not; it can make sure you walk in ready.
Where CoPilot Interview fits
CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant built around preparation: AI mock interviews with scored spoken answers, Coding mode for reviewing solutions, and practice questions in the browser with no signup. For proctored assessments that is the only role it should play.
Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an AI interview assistant during a proctored test?
No. Proctored assessments record your screen and camera, and the terms you accept when you start almost always prohibit outside help and AI tools. Using an assistant breaks that agreement and can void your application or bar you from reapplying.
What does proctoring software actually record?
Typically the webcam, the screen, and sometimes audio, along with checks for other open applications or a second device, identity verification, and automated flagging reviewed by a person afterward. Terms vary by platform and employer.
How should I use an AI interview assistant for a proctored assessment?
Before it: learn the format, run timed practice sets with nothing open, and review your attempts with Coding mode. After it: redo missed problems and run mock interviews for the live rounds that follow. Never during it.
Do the same rules apply to the live interviews after the assessment?
Not always. Live rounds have their own policy, and some employers allow AI tools and say so in the invite. If the invite is silent, ask the recruiter in writing and follow the answer for that round.
