A video interview assistant is a desktop app that listens to a live video interview on Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, shows a caption of the interviewer's question and drafts a structured answer you can say in your own words. CoPilot Interview does this in about 2 seconds on live two-way calls; for one-way recorded video interviews and AI-interviewer sessions, use it only to practice beforehand.
This page covers the parts that are specific to video: which kinds of video interview an assistant fits, how to set up your camera, microphone and lighting around it, and what plan length you need for a typical call. If you already know your call app, the app-specific guides go deeper: AI assistant for Zoom interviews, AI assistant for Microsoft Teams interviews and AI assistant for Google Meet interviews.
What a video interview assistant does on a live call
CoPilot Interview is a desktop app for Windows 10+ and macOS 12+. It runs as its own window, not a browser extension and not a plugin inside your call app. It listens to your computer's audio output, so it works alongside any video app that plays sound through your computer. In this guide we name Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. Webex also works for the same reason, but run a 2-minute test call first, as our Webex guide explains.
Here is the loop on a live video call:
- Open CoPilot Interview, then join the call in Zoom, Teams or Meet as you normally would.
- The interviewer asks a question. The app shows a live caption of it, so you can read what was asked as well as hear it.
- About 2 seconds later, a structured answer appears in the app window: talking points for a behavioral question, an approach and code for a coding question, or a design outline.
- You glance at the structure, pick two or three points and answer out loud in your own words.
- If the interviewer adds a follow-up, the new question gets its own caption and answer.
Two features matter most on video. Dual AI Mode shows answers from two AI models side by side, so you can pick the clearer one. Coding mode gives complete code in your chosen language, with complexity and an example run. CoPilot Interview supports 50+ languages and lets you choose among 9 AI models. For the technical side of how the app hears the call, see how AI interview assistants capture system audio.
Follow the rules of the employer or assessment you're in — many people use it only to practice, which works on the free plan.
Which video interviews a video interview assistant fits
"Video interview" covers several formats, and they are not the same. A live call with a person is one thing; a recorded answer to a prompt, or a session run by an AI interviewer, is another. Use this table to decide how CoPilot Interview fits each one.
| Video interview format | Who is on the other end | How to use CoPilot Interview |
|---|---|---|
| Live one-on-one on Zoom, Teams or Meet | A recruiter or hiring manager, in real time | Practice with Mock Interview first; live help only where the employer allows it |
| Live panel on video | Two or more interviewers taking turns | Same as above; read the caption to catch who asked what (see our panel interview guide) |
| Live technical round on video | An engineer watching you solve a problem | Practice coding and system design questions in Mock Interview; follow the employer's rules on the day |
| Other call apps (for example Webex) | A person, in real time | Works through your computer's audio; run a 2-minute test call first |
| One-way recorded video interview | No one; you record answers to prompts | Practice only, before you start recording |
| AI interviewer session on video | An AI that asks the questions | Practice only, before the session |
For the last two rows, the line is simple. Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand. The same goes for any recorded or AI-run screen: take the interview yourself.
Set up a video interview assistant before the call
Most problems on the day are setup problems, not answer problems. Do this the day before, on the same computer and network you will use for the interview.
- Install the app. Download, unzip and run it. On Windows the file is CoPilot_Interview_Setup.zip; on macOS it is CoPilot Interview.zip. No signup is needed to start.
- Set the interview language. Pick the language the interviewer will speak before the call, so captions don't have to guess.
- Use headphones. Laptop speakers can echo back into your microphone. Headphones give the interviewer clearer audio from you and give the app a cleaner signal from them.
- Run a test call. Join a short call with a friend in the same call app the employer uses. Check that the caption matches what your friend said.
- Arrange your windows. Keep the call window and the CoPilot Interview window side by side, and close everything else.
- Check your plan length. A free session runs up to 15 minutes. Most interviews run longer, so see the plan table below.
Our real-time interview assistant setup checklist covers the day-before, 30-minute and 2-minute checks in more detail, including what to do if the call drops.
Camera, mic and lighting checklist for video interviews
An assistant can't fix a dark face or a muffled voice. These checks apply to any video interview, live or recorded.
| Check | What good looks like | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|
| Camera height | Lens at about eye level, head and shoulders in frame | Raise the laptop on books or a stand |
| Eye contact | You look at the lens while you speak | Put a small sticker next to the lens as a reminder |
| Light | Light falls on your face from the front or side | Face a window or place a lamp behind your screen; avoid a bright window behind you |
| Microphone | Clear voice with no echo or hum | Use a headset mic; close windows and turn off fans |
| Headphones | You hear the interviewer clearly; no echo for them | Wired headphones avoid low-battery surprises |
| Background | Plain and tidy, nothing moving | Turn the camera toward a wall or use your call app's blur |
| Network | Stable video with no frozen frames | Sit near the router or use a cable; pause other downloads |
| Notifications | No pop-ups or sounds during the call | Turn on Do Not Disturb and quit chat apps |
One-way recorded video interviews: practice only
In a one-way video interview, you get a link, read or watch a prompt, get some time to think and then record your answer against a timer. Nobody is on the call. The employer sets the think time, answer time and number of takes, so read the instructions on your invitation. Our guide on what a one-way video interview is explains the format.
Treat these as something you do yourself. Take the interview yourself and follow the employer's rules. What an assistant can do is help you rehearse before you press record:
- Rehearse spoken answers. CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview builds questions from your résumé and the job description, reads each one aloud, listens to your spoken answer and scores it out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer. You get a report card at the end.
- Practice to a clock. Choose 3, 5 or 8 questions and answer each one as if a timer were running. Aim to finish early.
- Try the browser version. With nothing to install, the free AI mock interview has 113 real questions across 9 tracks, from behavioral and system design to SQL and security.
For timing strategies and a recording-day checklist, read our guide to practicing for recorded and one-way video interviews.
Habits for using it during a live video interview
Follow the rules of the employer or assessment you're in — many people use it only to practice, which works on the free plan. If you do use live help where it's allowed, these habits keep you sounding like yourself on camera:
- Read the caption first. If it doesn't match what you heard, ask the interviewer to repeat the question. "Could you say that again? I want to answer the right question" is a normal request.
- Take the structure, not the script. Pick two or three points and speak them your way. Reading full sentences on camera sounds flat, and the first follow-up shows whether the story is yours. Our guide on using AI answers in your own words has drills for this.
- Look back at the camera when you talk. Glance at the app between points, then deliver the point to the lens.
- Pause before you answer. A two-second pause on video reads as thinking, not as a problem.
- Keep your examples true. Never tell a story you didn't live, and never claim a number you can't defend.
If you want captions mainly to follow the question, not for answer drafts, our page on live captions for interviews compares the caption options, including the ones built into your call app.

What is a video interview assistant?
A video interview assistant is a desktop app that listens to a live video interview, shows a caption of the interviewer's question and drafts a structured answer. CoPilot Interview does this in about 2 seconds beside Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. It also includes Mock Interview, which scores your spoken practice answers out of 10.
Does CoPilot Interview work with Zoom, Teams and Google Meet?
Yes. It runs as its own desktop window on Windows 10+ and macOS 12+ and listens to your computer's audio, so it works alongside Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and other call apps that play sound through your computer. It is not a plugin and has no official integration with any call app.
Can I use a video interview assistant on a one-way recorded interview?
Use it to practice, not during the recording. Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand. Mock Interview reads questions aloud and scores your spoken answers, which suits rehearsing for a timed recording.
Is it allowed to use an AI assistant in a live video interview?
It depends on the employer. Follow the rules of the employer or assessment you're in — many people use it only to practice, which works on the free plan. If you're unsure, ask the recruiter before the interview.
How long can a session run on the free plan?
Free sessions run up to 15 minutes, with 15 free minutes every day. For a full 30- to 60-minute interview, Standard gives 60-minute sessions for $14.99 a month on sale, and pay-as-you-go hours start at $5.99 for one hour.
What camera and microphone setup do I need?
A built-in laptop camera works if it's at eye level and your face is lit from the front. Use headphones with a microphone, so the interviewer hears you clearly and your speakers don't echo into the call. Test everything in a short call the day before.
Is CoPilot Interview the same as Microsoft Copilot?
No. CoPilot Interview is made by NeuraSense AI LLC and is not affiliated with Microsoft, Microsoft Copilot or GitHub Copilot.
