Wonderlic Test: Format, Scoring and How to Prepare

What Wonderlic Select includes, how the 12-minute cognitive section works, what employers and candidates see afterward, and how to practice in a week.

The Wonderlic test most job seekers get today is Wonderlic Select (formerly WonScore), a hiring assessment that takes about 35 minutes on average: a timed cognitive section of 50 questions in 12 minutes, plus two untimed sections on motivation (58 items) and personality (150 items). As of October 2026, Wonderlic says there is no passing or failing grade, you aren't expected to finish all 50 cognitive questions, and the test is free for candidates.

Everything factual below comes from Wonderlic's candidate FAQ and its cognitive ability page, both checked in October 2026. The practice plan and examples are ours. If your invitation describes a different Wonderlic product, follow the invitation.

What is on the Wonderlic test?

Wonderlic Select measures three things: how quickly you learn and solve problems, what kind of work motivates you, and your work-relevant personality traits. Only the first part is timed.

SectionItemsTimeWhat it covers
Cognitive ability5012 minutesSimple math, basic logic, language comprehension, spatial reasoning and pattern identification
Motivation58UntimedVocational interests: the kinds of work you prefer
Personality150UntimedHow you tend to behave and work

Three details from Wonderlic shape how you should practice:

How is the Wonderlic test scored?

Wonderlic scores the cognitive section from your overall response pattern, weighting each question by its difficulty and the impact of guessing. Results from all three sections are then combined and compared with the demands of the specific job using a proprietary method. That is why Wonderlic says there is no universal good or average score for Wonderlic Select.

What each side sees, as of October 2026:

In practice, your goal is simple: answer as many cognitive questions correctly as you can in 12 minutes, and answer the untimed sections honestly and consistently.

Wonderlic vs CCAT: which test are you taking?

Many candidates confuse the two because both are short, timed cognitive tests with 50 questions. The differences matter for pacing.

How to prepare for the Wonderlic test in a week

Wonderlic says preparation isn't required and offers free sample questions. Still, a week of short, timed practice makes the 12-minute section feel familiar. This plan is ours.

DayFocusWhat to do
1BaselineWork through Wonderlic's free sample questions untimed, then note which question types slowed you down.
2Mental mathTen-minute sets of percentages, fractions, ratios, averages and simple rates, without a calculator.
3LanguageWord meanings, analogies and short reading questions. Practice picking the answer in one read.
4Logic and patternsNumber series, shape patterns and "if A then B" statements. Say the rule before choosing.
5Timed setAnswer 50 mixed questions in 12 minutes. Review only the misses and the slow ones.
6Second timed setRepeat with new questions. Track how many you answered and how many were right.
7Logistics and restCheck the invitation deadline, plan a quiet 40-minute window and get a good night's sleep.
Tip: Because questions get harder as you go, the early questions are your cheapest points. Move briskly but carefully through the first half instead of rushing it to save time for questions you may not reach.

An example we wrote

Question: A printer prints 45 pages in 3 minutes. How many pages does it print in 8 minutes? The quick route is the unit rate: 45 ÷ 3 = 15 pages a minute, and 15 × 8 = 120. Drilling unit rates like this until they take a few seconds is the single best use of Wonderlic practice time.

The untimed sections

The motivation and personality sections have no right answers to study. Read each item, answer the way you actually work, and don't overthink it. Answering the way you imagine an employer wants tends to produce an inconsistent profile, and Wonderlic matches results against the job, not against an ideal candidate.

What should you know before you start?

Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand. CoPilot Interview doesn't contain Wonderlic questions. Use Wonderlic's sample questions for the test, then use CoPilot Interview to rehearse the interviews that come after it.

After the Wonderlic: prepare for the interview

A Wonderlic result usually decides who gets an interview, not who gets the job. Once you're through, practice speaking your answers. The free AI mock interview runs in your browser, and the CoPilot Interview desktop app for Windows and macOS builds a mock interview from your résumé and the job description, reads each question aloud and scores your spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer. Build your examples first with the STAR story builder, and see how online assessments fit into hiring if this is your first one.
