Welder interviews are practical: which processes and positions you are certified in, how you read a welding symbol and a WPS, how you set up for a joint and avoid common defects, how you work safely around fumes, fire and confined spaces, and whether your work passes inspection. Nearly every employer follows the interview with a weld test. Neighboring trade interviews share the safety questions; see electrician interview questions and maintenance technician interview questions. The people who will check your work are described in quality inspector interview questions. This page gives 10 questions with what a strong answer contains, 3 sample answers you can adapt, a table of the rounds to expect, and a practice plan for the week before.
What the interview looks like
| Round | What happens | Prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | Processes (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW), positions, certifications and codes (AWS D1.1, ASME IX, API), materials, shifts | Certifications with dates and the test positions you passed |
| Supervisor interview | Setup, defects, symbols, safety, behavioral | Specific answers with parameters and causes |
| Weld test | A test coupon in the process and position the job requires, inspected visually and sometimes by bend or X-ray | Practice the exact test; bring your own hood and gloves |
Welder interview questions and what strong answers contain
- Which processes and positions are you certified in, and on what materials? Honest list with codes, positions (1G to 6G, 1F to 4F), thicknesses, dates.
- Walk me through setting up for a specific joint, for example a vertical-up fillet in FCAW. Machine settings, wire and gas, joint prep, fit-up, technique, travel speed, interpass cleaning.
- What causes porosity, and how do you prevent it? Contamination, gas coverage, moisture in electrodes, wind, wrong parameters; cleaning, shielding, storage.
- How do you read a welding symbol? Arrow and other side, weld type, size, length and pitch, contour, field weld flag, tail notes.
- What is a WPS and how do you use it? Welding procedure specification: the qualified parameters you must stay within; you follow it, you do not improvise.
- Describe your safety practices. Fume extraction, fire watch and hot work permits, confined space procedures, PPE, grounding, gas cylinder handling.
- Tell me about a weld that failed inspection and what you changed. The defect, the cause, the correction.
- How do you control distortion? Sequence, tack spacing, fixturing, heat input, back-stepping.
- How do you handle production pressure to move faster? Stay within the WPS; speed comes from setup and fit-up, not from skipping passes.
- What do you want to learn next? A real goal: a process, a position, a code, pipe.
Sample answers
What causes porosity, and how do you prevent it?
Something is contaminating the weld pool: oil, paint, mill scale or moisture on the base metal, moisture in the electrode or flux, inadequate gas coverage from a wrong flow rate, a damaged nozzle or wind outdoors, or parameters that are off. I prevent it by grinding to bright metal, keeping rods in the oven, checking the gas flow and the nozzle before I start, and shielding outdoor work. If I see porosity I stop and find the cause rather than welding over it.
Tell me about a weld that failed inspection.
A root pass on a pipe test showed lack of fusion on the X-ray. I had my root gap too tight after fit-up moved on me during tacking. I started measuring the gap at four points after tacking and adjusting before the root, and I slowed my travel slightly at the start of each pass. The retest passed and I have not failed a root since.
How do you handle production pressure to move faster?
I do not change the parameters or skip a pass, because the WPS is not a suggestion and a rejected weld costs more time than it saved. What I can do is get faster at the parts around the arc: fit-up, tacking, cleaning, moving between joints. Most of a shift is not arc time, and that is where the speed is.
Mistakes to avoid
- Claiming certifications you cannot show or that have lapsed.
- Vague defect answers; name causes and fixes.
- Treating the WPS as a guideline.
- Safety answers with no specifics about fire watch or fumes.
A practice plan for the week before
- Gather your certifications and know the codes, positions and dates on each.
- Review defect causes and fixes, welding symbols and the WPS basics for the company's work.
- Practice the likely test coupon in the exact process and position until it is routine.
- Run a mock interview from the posting and answer aloud with parameters and causes.
- Prepare questions about the materials, codes, inspection methods and overtime.
Where CoPilot Interview fits
CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant whose free AI mock interview builds welder questions from your résumé and the job description, reads them aloud, scores each spoken answer out of ten and shows a model answer, which is the fastest way to turn the outlines above into answers that sound like you. The free plan gives 15 minutes a day of live help in sessions of up to 15 minutes, with AI mock interviews included. Most welders use it to practice; if you ever consider live help in a video interview, follow your employer's rules.
Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
What questions are asked in a welder interview?
Processes and positions, setup for a joint, porosity and other defects, welding symbols, the WPS, safety, a failed weld, distortion control, production pressure and what you want to learn.
Is there a weld test?
Almost always, in the process and position the job requires, inspected visually and sometimes by bend test or X-ray. Practice that exact coupon.
How should I answer the porosity question?
Name the causes, contamination, gas coverage, moisture, wind, parameters, and the prevention for each, and say you stop to find the cause rather than weld over it.
What do welding supervisors look for?
Verified certifications, defect understanding, WPS discipline, safety habits and consistency under production pressure.
