TestGorilla Assessment: What to Expect and How to Prepare

How a TestGorilla assessment works from invitation to results, what the test library covers, what the platform monitors, and how to prepare for the tests in your invitation.

A TestGorilla assessment is an online, timed skills assessment that an employer sends you by email: up to five tests from TestGorilla's library plus up to 20 custom questions, which can include video answers, taken in your browser in full-screen mode. As of October 2026, TestGorilla lets you use pen, paper and a calculator but asks you not to use AI or other tools, and skipped questions count as wrong, so prepare for the specific tests listed in your invitation and answer every question.

The facts below come from TestGorilla's candidate guide to taking your assessment (updated July 2026) and its help article on test-integrity measures (updated September 2026), both checked in October 2026. The preparation advice is ours. You don't need a TestGorilla account to take an assessment; you start from the link in your invitation.

How does a TestGorilla assessment work?

Every assessment follows the same flow, though employers switch some steps on or off.

  1. Invitation. An email from TestGorilla with the subject "Your application at" followed by the company name. It lists the contents of the assessment and how long you'll have. If you don't start, a reminder follows within 48 hours, and TestGorilla says it never sends more than two reminders per assessment.
  2. Landing page. Enter your name and email and accept the privacy policy.
  3. Welcome screen. Shows how many timed tests and custom questions you'll get and the approximate total time. It may take you less time, but not more.
  4. Accommodations. If the employer enables it, you're asked whether you're fluent in the test language and whether you have a condition that affects memory or concentration.
  5. Honesty agreement. You agree to complete the assessment without AI tools, without retaking it and without other prohibited behavior.
  6. Camera and microphone check. Used for periodic snapshots, if the employer enables them, and for video questions.
  7. Tests. Many tests open with practice questions that don't count toward your score. Each test has a timer, sometimes per question too.
  8. Breaks. You can pause only between tests, when prompted, and resume later from your invitation link.
  9. Results. Your results go to the employer. You can see them on a TestGorilla profile only if the employer chooses to share them.

What tests can be in a TestGorilla assessment?

The employer picks the tests. As of October 2026, TestGorilla's test library filters tests into these categories:

CategoryTests listed (Oct 2026)How to practice
Role-specific skills162Review the core tasks in the job description and the vocabulary of the field
Programming skills83Timed problems in the named language; know its standard library basics
Software skills59Do real tasks in the named tool, such as formulas and pivot tables in a spreadsheet
Language37Grammar, reading and short writing exercises in the test language
Cognitive ability17Timed numerical, verbal and pattern questions without a calculator habit
Situational judgment13Think through how the role handles customers, conflicts and deadlines
Personality and culture6No drilling; answer as you actually work
Typing speed4A few timed typing runs to warm up

The library also lists an AI fluency category. Test lengths vary: typing tests are a few minutes, while some simulations run about an hour. Question types include multiple choice, essay, file upload, video, AI interviews, typing and coding.

What does TestGorilla monitor during the assessment?

TestGorilla's help article for employers on test integrity lists what it records, as of October 2026:

Employers see a summary tier: No Issues, Some Issues or Major Issues. TestGorilla says these signals are not proof of wrongdoing and recommends employers contact a candidate rather than reject on a flag alone. Even so, a clean session is easier for everyone, so close other tabs, silence notifications and keep your webcam on before you start.

Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand. CoPilot Interview doesn't contain TestGorilla tests. Practice the skills your invitation names, and use CoPilot Interview for video questions and the interviews that follow.

How to prepare for a TestGorilla assessment

You can't preview real TestGorilla questions: the company keeps questions and answers hidden and blocks personal and school email addresses from signing up as customers. So prepare the underlying skills. Our plan:

  1. Read the invitation closely. It lists every test and the total time. Write down each test name.
  2. Map each test to a practice task using the table above, and spend most of your time on the tests closest to the job's core work.
  3. Practice under a timer. TestGorilla timers are fixed, so get used to answering and moving on.
  4. Rehearse video answers out loud. If the employer added video questions, record practice answers and watch them back.
  5. Prepare your setup. A laptop or desktop with a working webcam and microphone, a reliable connection, pen, paper and a calculator.
Tip: Test your camera and microphone on the setup screen by recording the short test video TestGorilla suggests. It takes a minute and removes a common source of stress before video questions.

Rules that change your strategy

Video questions and what comes next

Employers can add custom video questions, for example "Why do you want this role?" You record your answer with your webcam inside the assessment. Treat each one like a short interview answer: lead with your point, give one example and finish within the time shown. Our guide to one-way video interviews covers the format, and recording yourself for practice covers the setup.

To rehearse, a free AI mock interview runs in your browser with nothing to install. The CoPilot Interview desktop app for Windows and macOS builds a mock interview from your résumé and the job description, reads each question aloud and scores your spoken answer out of 10 with what worked, what to fix and a model answer. If your assessment includes coding, the coding interview cheat sheet is a quick refresher. For other test formats, see our guides to the CCAT and online assessments.

FAQ

How many tests are in a TestGorilla assessment?

Up to five tests plus up to 20 custom questions, according to TestGorilla's candidate guide as of October 2026. Your invitation lists the exact contents.

Can I use a calculator on a TestGorilla assessment?

Yes. TestGorilla says you can use pen, paper and a calculator, but asks you to avoid AI and other tools.

Can I go back to a skipped question on TestGorilla?

No. Once you skip a question you can't return to it, and skipped questions count as wrong answers, so guess if you're unsure.

Does TestGorilla use my webcam?

If the employer enables it, TestGorilla takes webcam snapshots during the assessment, every 15 seconds according to its help center. Your camera is also used for any video questions.

What happens if I leave full-screen mode?

The current question is hidden until you return, and the exit is recorded. TestGorilla tells employers such signals are not proof of wrongdoing on their own.

Can I see my TestGorilla results?

Your results go to the employer. You can view them on a TestGorilla profile only if the employer chooses to share them.

Can I retake a TestGorilla assessment?

TestGorilla allows one attempt per email address and blocks repeat registrations. Contact the employer if something went wrong technically.
