Tell Me About a Time You Met a Target: Sample Answers

To answer "tell me about a time you met a target", state the target as a number, explain the one or two things you did differently, and finish with your result compared with the target. For example: "My CSAT target was 85 percent; I changed how I closed calls and reached 88 percent in two months." Sales, call center and retail interviewers ask this to see whether you understand goals and can talk in numbers.

Sales, call center and retail interviewers ask this to see whether you understand goals and can talk in numbers. If you have never had a formal quota, school, volunteer and personal targets work too.

What the interviewer is listening for

Three things. First, that you know what a target looks like in this job: sales per week, sign-ups, handle time, customer satisfaction, units picked per hour. Second, that you met it through actions you could repeat, not luck. Third, honesty. Numbers are easy to check with a reference, so round carefully and never invent them. Call center candidates can review the common metrics in our guide to AHT, CSAT and FCR.

STAR with a number in every step

STAR stands for situation, task, action, result. For this question, put a number in each part:

If you don't remember exact figures, say "about" and stay close to the truth. Our STAR method guide has more examples.

Sample answers with real-looking numbers

Call center

"In my second month on a telco account, my CSAT target was 85 percent and I was at 79. I listened to five of my low-scored calls and heard that I rushed the ending. I started summarizing the fix and asking if anything else was needed. By month four I was at 88 percent, and my team lead used two of my calls in training."

Retail

"Our store asked each cashier to sign up 20 loyalty members a week, and I averaged 12. I changed my line from 'Do you want a loyalty card?' to showing customers what they'd save on today's basket. Within three weeks I averaged 24 a week, and I shared the line at our morning huddle."

Entry level

"Our volunteer group aimed to collect 300 books for a community library in one month. I handled social media: a photo update every two days and a request for classmates to tag friends. We collected 340 books, about 13 percent over the goal, and I learned that regular updates keep people involved."

Turn vague claims into numbers

Vague claimSame claim with numbers
"I always hit my targets.""I met my weekly sales target in 10 of 12 weeks last quarter."
"Customers loved me.""My CSAT rose from 79 to 88 percent in two months."
"I was one of the best.""I ranked third of 18 agents for first-call resolution."
"We did really well.""Our team beat the book drive goal by 40 books."

Also avoid a team result with no clear role for you, a long setup before the numbers, and any story where you hit the target by pushing customers or bending rules.

Two-minute target drill

Write two numbers on a sticky note: the target and your result. Say the whole answer in 60 seconds: 10 seconds for situation and task, 30 for action, 20 for result. Then answer the likely follow-up, "Tell me about a time you missed a target," in 30 seconds, naming what you changed afterward. If missing hurts to talk about, our guide on handling rejection in sales helps with tone.

Frequently asked questions

What if I have never had a sales target?

Use any goal with a number: a fundraising amount, books or donations collected, grades you aimed for, a fitness goal, or a deadline at a part-time job. Explain the target, what you did, and the result compared with the goal.

What if I didn't meet my target?

Pick a different story for this question, but be ready for "tell me about a time you missed a target." For that one, own it briefly, explain what you learned and show a later result where the change worked.

Can I use a team target in my answer?

Yes, as long as you explain your own part clearly. Say what the team goal was, what you personally did, and how your work affected the result. Use "I" for your actions and "we" only for the shared outcome.

How exact do my numbers need to be?

Close and honest is enough. Saying "about 15 percent above target" is fine if it is true. Never invent or inflate figures, because a reference check or a follow-up question can expose them quickly.
