The TD Bank interview process has three steps on TD's careers site: explore openings, apply through a TD candidate account, and interview. TD's careers FAQ adds that it is typical to be interviewed at least twice before a hiring decision is made, that you may be asked to come in for an in-person interview, and that only candidates selected for interviews are contacted.
This guide covers TD (Toronto-Dominion Bank) roles in Canada, from branch and contact centre jobs to head office, technology and student programs. It sticks to what TD publishes, labels what candidates commonly report, and gives you practice questions we wrote around TD's values. For the national picture, see our job interview tips for Canada; to compare banks, read the RBC interview process and the BMO interview process.
What are the steps in the TD interview process?
The first three rows come from TD's Getting started page and its careers FAQ, both checked in October 2026.
| Step | What TD says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Explore | Postings describe the team, key responsibilities and qualifications; you can filter by keyword, job title, location and workplace model | Pick roles where you meet most of the listed qualifications and note the work model before you apply |
| Apply | You need a candidate account to apply; tailor your résumé to the posting; a submitted application cannot be edited | Check every field on the review screen before you click Submit |
| Interview | Typically at least two interviews before a decision; you may be asked to interview in person | Prepare for a screening conversation and a deeper interview with the hiring manager |
| Decision | Only candidates of interest are contacted; TD says it does its best to email outcomes to all applicants | Track status in the My Applications section of your account |
Two account details matter. If you withdraw an application, TD's FAQ says you cannot reapply to that posting; reactivation goes through TD's hiring support team, with no changes allowed. And you can set job alerts in your account so new postings that match your filters reach you by email.
Candidates commonly describe the first interview as a phone or video screen with a recruiter or the hiring manager, and the second as a behavioural interview, sometimes with a panel. Some technology and student roles add an online assessment. Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand.
The TD Way: values and leadership principles to prepare for
As of October 2026, TD's Who we are page describes "the TD Way", a framework that brings together its ambition, values and leadership principles. Its stated purpose is to reimagine what banking can be for clients, colleagues and communities, and its promise is "Remarkably human. Refreshingly simple." Under "Who we are", it lists five behaviours. Map one story to each:
| TD Way behaviour | Story to prepare |
|---|---|
| Build deep client relationships | A time you turned a one-off request into a lasting relationship, or kept a customer who was about to leave |
| Execute brilliantly | A time you delivered accurate work under a tight deadline |
| Simplify and deliver faster | A process you made simpler, with a before-and-after number |
| Do the right thing – own it, raise it, know it | A time you raised a concern or owned a mistake before anyone asked |
| Win together | A time you helped a teammate or another team succeed |
For people-leader roles, TD also lists "How we lead" principles: take accountability, be courageous, disciplined execution with speed, live inclusion, and hire and develop the best. If you are interviewing for a manager role, prepare a story about hiring or developing someone.
TD's careers page still asks candidates to think about how they would contribute to its vision to "Be the Better Bank". Prepare a 60-second answer that links one of your strengths to the role and to how TD describes itself.
What does TD advise you to do before an interview?
TD's own interview tips are short and practical. In summary:
- Learn who TD is: its purpose and the values behind it.
- Share your experiences: show how your skills match the role and bring career success stories.
- Come with thoughtful questions about TD and the job.
- Test your technology for virtual interviews, and tell the interviewer if you have technical problems.
- Reschedule properly: if you need to, contact the person who scheduled the interview.
"Career success stories" is the key phrase. TD is asking for specific examples, which is exactly what a behavioural interview tests. Our guide to behavioural interview questions in Canada shows how to build them, and the free STAR story builder turns rough notes into a structured answer.
Practice questions for a TD interview
We wrote these practice questions to match the TD Way and the behavioural style candidates describe. They are not questions TD has published or asked.
- How would you contribute to TD's vision to be the better bank? (TD's careers page poses this idea; prepare your own version.)
- Tell me about a time you built trust with a customer who was frustrated.
- Describe a time you found a simpler way to do a routine task.
- Tell me about a time you raised a concern about something that did not seem right.
- Give an example of a goal you reached by working with another team.
- Tell me about a time you had several urgent tasks at once. How did you decide what came first?
- What would you do if a client asked for advice outside your area of expertise?
- Why TD, and why this role?
Example answer we wrote (Do the right thing, contact centre role): "In my last customer service job, I noticed that a refund script we were using told customers their money would arrive in three days, but our payment system actually took up to ten. Customers were calling back angry. I collected five examples, raised it with my team lead and suggested new wording. The script was updated within the week, and the callbacks on that issue mostly stopped. I learned that raising a small problem early saves everyone time."
For branch and sales roles, add a question about meeting targets ethically. Banks pay close attention to whether you put the client's needs first, so build a story where you recommended a smaller product because it fit better.
Who can apply, and how student hiring differs
TD's careers FAQ says applicants must be a citizen of the country where they are applying, hold landed immigrant (permanent resident) status, or hold a valid work visa. If you are on a work permit, have your permit type and expiry date ready, because a recruiter may ask. This is general information, not immigration advice; check your own situation on the Government of Canada website. Our guide to job interview tips for newcomers to Canada covers how to talk about international experience.
For students, TD runs Early Talent programs that offer paid work experience to undergraduate, master's and PhD students and recent graduates, plus Graduate Leadership Programs. As of October 2026, TD's student page says it primarily offers an office-focused experience, so expect questions about working on site with your team. Our co-op interview tips cover the student process.
Before any screen, decide on your pay range. Many TD postings are in Ontario, where publicly advertised postings by employers with 25 or more employees must include expected pay or a range as of January 1, 2026, so use the posted range as your anchor. Our guide on how to answer salary expectations in Canada explains how.
How to prepare for your TD interview
- Read the posting and TD's purpose. Underline the skills and connect each to a story.
- Write five stories, one per TD Way behaviour, in STAR form with a number in the result.
- Prepare your "better bank" answer and your "why TD" answer, each under a minute.
- Practise out loud. Answers that read well on paper often run long when spoken.
- Prepare two or three questions, such as how the team measures success in the first 90 days.
- Test your setup for a virtual interview, or plan your route for an in-person one.
For step 4, CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview builds questions from your résumé and the TD job description, reads them aloud, and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer, then gives you a report card. The free plan is 15 minutes a day with no account or credit card; the browser mock interview runs without installing anything. Follow the rules of the employer or assessment you're in — many people use it only to practise, which works on the free plan.
