Sterile Processing Technician Interview Questions and Answers

Sterile processing technician interviews test the discipline of decontamination, assembly, sterilisation and quality checks on instruments that go into patients, how you handle a tray with a missing or damaged item minutes before a case, how you read and follow manufacturer instructions, and how you stay accurate through a shift of repetitive work. Expect scenario questions and sometimes a practical.

The operating-room side you serve is covered in surgical technologist interview questions, the lab discipline overlaps with medical laboratory technician interview questions, and the repetition question has a standard answer in how do you handle repetitive work. This page gives 10 questions with what a strong answer contains, 3 sample answers you can adapt, a table of the rounds to expect, and a practice plan for the week before.

Sterile processing technician interview questions and what strong answers contain

  1. Walk me through the flow from a used tray arriving to it going back to the OR. Decontamination with correct PPE, cleaning per instructions for use, inspection, assembly with count sheets, packaging, sterilisation by the right method, biological and chemical indicators, storage.
  2. A tray is missing an instrument minutes before a case. What do you do? Check the count sheet and the area, source a sterile replacement or an equivalent set, communicate with the OR immediately, document, find the cause after.
  3. How do you decide which sterilisation method an instrument needs? The manufacturer's instructions for use, material compatibility, lumen and complexity, facility policy.
  4. What do you do if a biological indicator fails? Quarantine the load, recall items per policy, notify, investigate the steriliser, document, re-process.
  5. How do you inspect instruments for damage and function? Magnification, function tests on hinges and scissors, checking for bioburden and corrosion, removing and tagging defects.
  6. How do you maintain accuracy through a long shift? Routine order, count sheets every time, no shortcuts under pressure, breaks, flagging fatigue.
  7. Describe a time you found a problem others had missed. What, how, what you did, what changed.
  8. How do you handle pressure from the OR to rush a tray? Explain the cycle and the standard, offer alternatives, never release an unverified load.
  9. How do you keep up with instructions for use and standards? Reference systems, in-services, asking rather than assuming.
  10. Tell me about a mistake you made and what changed. Specific, owned, process fix.

Sample answers

A tray is missing an instrument minutes before a case.

I confirm against the count sheet that it is really missing and not mis-sorted, check the assembly area, and look for a sterile replacement, either a peel-packed single or an equivalent set. While I am doing that, I call the OR so the team knows the status and can decide whether to delay or proceed with the substitute. I document the shortage. Afterwards I trace where it went missing, because a missing instrument is a process failure, not a one-off.

What do you do if a biological indicator fails?

I treat the whole load as non-sterile. I quarantine everything from that cycle, start the recall process for anything already released, and notify the supervisor and the OR. The steriliser comes out of service until it passes the required retests. I document every step. It is disruptive, and that is the point; the alternative is an instrument in a patient that was not sterile.

How do you handle pressure from the OR to rush a tray?

I understand the pressure and I say what is actually possible: the cycle takes what it takes, and I will not release a load before the indicators are read. What I can do is look for a substitute set, prioritise the next cycle, or get a loaner. The OR staff I have worked with respect that once they have seen that I will move heaven and earth within the rules and never outside them.

Mistakes to avoid

A practice plan for the week before

  1. Rehearse the full workflow aloud with PPE, indicators and documentation named.
  2. Review sterilisation methods, parameters and the biological-indicator failure response.
  3. Write stories for a missing instrument, OR pressure, a problem you caught and a mistake.
  4. Run a mock interview from the posting and answer aloud.
  5. Prepare questions about tray volume, instrument tracking systems, shifts and certification support.

Where CoPilot Interview fits

CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant whose free AI mock interview builds sterile processing questions from your résumé and the job description, reads them aloud, scores each spoken answer out of ten and shows a model answer, which is the fastest way to turn the outlines above into answers that sound like you. The free plan gives 15 minutes a day of live help in sessions of up to 15 minutes, with AI mock interviews included. Most technicians use it to practice; if you ever consider live help in a video interview, follow your employer's rules.

Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

What questions are asked in a sterile processing interview?

The decontamination-to-OR workflow, missing instruments before a case, choosing sterilisation methods, biological indicator failures, instrument inspection, accuracy through repetition, problems you caught, OR pressure, standards and mistakes.

How should I answer the biological indicator question?

Quarantine the load, recall released items per policy, notify, take the steriliser out of service until it passes, document everything.

Is there a practical?

Sometimes: identifying instruments, assembling a tray or reading a sterilisation record.

What do sterile processing managers look for?

Workflow discipline, respect for instructions for use, zero tolerance for unverified loads, attention through repetition and calm with OR pressure.
