Shopify Interview Process: Every Stage, the Life Story and How to Prepare

The stages, lengths and formats Shopify publishes, what its craft assessment and Life Story involve, what it looks for, and practice questions we wrote.

The Shopify interview process, as Shopify publishes it, runs through five stages after you apply: an initial call with a recruiter or hiring manager, a craft assessment, the Life Story interview, meeting the team, and a decision. Shopify says the order and number of interviews vary by role and team, and engineering (R&D) candidates skip the initial call and go straight to pair programming before the Life Story. Prepare for two things above all: showing your craft on a realistic problem, and explaining the decisions behind your career honestly.

Everything below comes from Shopify's own careers FAQ and candidate guide, checked in October 2026. Where we add practice questions or advice, we label it. For engineering-specific coding prep and a deeper look at the Life Story round, see our Shopify coding interview questions guide. If you're interviewing from Canada, our job interview tips for Canada cover local norms.

What are the stages of the Shopify interview process?

StageWhat Shopify saysLength (as published)
ApplyPick one or two roles that fit you; you can apply to at most two within a 30-day period.-
Initial callA phone or virtual conversation with a recruiter or hiring manager. R&D applicants skip this and go directly to pair programming before the Life Story.15–30 minutes
Craft assessmentAn interview with at least one person in your craft, plus a brief predictive assessment of how you approach problems, think critically and notice details.60–75 minutes
The Life StoryA conversation-style interview with a recruiter about the themes of your career, the problems you solved, the decisions you made and what you learned.30–60 minutes
Meet the teamConversations with three to five future co-workers, who may ask how you would solve a problem and communicate the solution.Up to an hour each
DecisionThe hiring team meets and weighs feedback from people of varying seniority, experience and perspective.Varies

Shopify's candidate guide describes the same building blocks in a slightly different order and adds detail: the craft assessment starts with an online assessment, followed by a discipline-specific exercise; deeper "craft interviews" come next; and a recruiter then matches you to a team, ending with a 30-minute chat with your potential manager. Because the two official pages differ, ask your recruiter for your exact sequence. Shopify says recruiters and coordinators can answer questions about what to expect and who you'll meet.

Timing isn't published; Shopify says it varies by role and number of applicants, and only candidates who move forward are contacted.

What is the Shopify craft assessment?

Shopify's candidate guide says "Craft > everything at Shopify", and the craft stage is where that shows. The format depends on your discipline:

Follow-up craft interviews "dive deeper into your experience and technical aptitude" and, according to the guide, may include a technical deep dive on a past project, a design critique, exploring a dataset with SQL, or solving a problem with the interviewer as your "co-pilot". Shopify says it tells candidates in advance what to expect and how to prepare, so read that briefing closely.

The predictive assessment is a short online test of problem solving and attention to detail. Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand.

Tip: In a pair programming round, narrate your choices: why this data structure, what you would test next, what you'd do with more time. Shopify's guide even calls the interviewer your "co-pilot" in some craft interviews, so treat them like a teammate rather than a judge.

How do you prepare for the Shopify Life Story interview?

Shopify describes the Life Story as a conversation about "the themes of your career journey so far", what you've learned and how you made a difference, and tells candidates to expect to discuss "the trophies and the bruises". Its advice is to reflect on the experiences and decisions that brought you to where you are, including your hits and misses, pivotal moments, proudest work and hardest projects. Manager candidates also have a Management Life Story, built on concrete examples from their management experience.

A practical way to prepare (our method):

  1. Write your timeline: each school, job and major project, with the reason you started and the reason you moved on.
  2. For each turn, note one thing you learned and one thing you would do differently.
  3. Pick two failures you can discuss without blaming anyone, and what changed afterwards.
  4. Say the whole story out loud in about ten minutes, then let a friend interrupt with "why?" at any point.

What does Shopify look for in candidates?

On its careers page, Shopify sums up who it hires in three phrases: "Accept our mission", "Thrive on change" and "Chase excellence". Its candidate guide is also candid that the work can be demanding and that people need to be comfortable in an ambiguous environment. Here is how each idea can show up in your answers:

What Shopify saysEvidence to bring (our advice)Practice question (ours)
Accept our missionReal interest in entrepreneurs and merchants; anything you've built or sold yourself"Why do you want to help merchants, specifically?"
Thrive on changeA time priorities shifted and you adapted quickly without losing quality"Tell me about a project that changed direction halfway through."
Chase excellenceA piece of work you raised above "done", with a measurable result"What's the best thing you've built, and how did you know it was good?"
Comfort with ambiguityA problem you solved without clear requirements"Describe a time you had to define the problem before solving it."

Shopify's careers page also describes the way it works as "Digital by Design", with people working where they work best and the option to drop into an office, and it mentions the company's "reflexive use of AI". Be ready to talk about how you work remotely and how you use AI tools in your own work.

Shopify internships, Dev Degree and early-career programs

Shopify publishes four early-career routes: the Dev Degree program (a three-to-four-year program to earn a computer science degree while working), paid four-month engineering internships, a 12-month Apprentice Product Manager (APM) program and a six-month Design Apprentice program. If you're a student in a Canadian co-op program, our co-op interview tips explain how school-run recruiting works, and our software engineer intern interview questions cover the technical side.

How to prepare for the Shopify interview process

  1. Ask your recruiter for your stage order and the format of the craft round.
  2. Practise your craft in realistic conditions: pair-style coding with tests for engineers, a tight portfolio walkthrough for designers, a structured case for product managers.
  3. Prepare your Life Story using the timeline method above.
  4. Prepare for meet-the-team conversations by explaining a past solution clearly to someone outside your specialty.
  5. Rehearse out loud. CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview builds questions from your résumé and the Shopify job description, lets you choose the mix (behavioural, technical, system design, coding) and an optional focus, and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer. It's free for 15 minutes a day with no account. The browser AI mock interview needs nothing installed.
  6. Know the pay model. Shopify's FAQ describes "Flex Comp", which lets you choose your balance of base salary and equity and change it during the year. Our guide to answering salary expectations in Canada helps with the conversation.
