Restaurant server interviews are about how you behave when every table wants you at once. Managers ask server interview questions about busy shifts, juggling tables, calming an upset guest, suggesting drinks or desserts without being pushy, and working smoothly with the kitchen and hosts. Personality counts: they are picturing you at a full section on a Friday night.
Below are the questions, four sample answers (one for first-time servers), a table of what each question checks and a one-week practice plan.
What restaurant managers are testing
Managers listen for calm multitasking, warmth, teamwork and honesty. A strong server says “I’d let the table know” rather than hiding a problem, and “I’d help the runner” rather than “that’s not my section.” Some restaurants add a short trial shift or ask you to describe a dish, so read the menu before you go.
If the job includes serving alcohol, some places require responsible-service training or a minimum age; the rules vary by state and country, and the restaurant will tell you what applies.
Server interview questions
Getting to know you
- Why do you want to serve here?
- What is your availability, especially weekends and holidays?
- What is your favorite dish on our menu?
Mid-shift scenarios
- Five tables are seated within ten minutes. How do you prioritize?
- A guest says their steak is overcooked and they’re angry. What do you do?
- The kitchen is backed up and a table asks where their food is. What do you say?
Your track record
- Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer.
- Describe helping a coworker during a rush.
- Tell me about a mistake you made with an order.
Sample answers for servers
Five tables at once: “I’d greet every table within a minute or two, even just ‘I’ll be right with you, can I start you with water?’, so nobody feels forgotten. Then drink orders in seating order, grouping my trips. If I fell behind, I’d ask a teammate for help before guests noticed.”
The overcooked steak: “I’d apologize, take the plate right away and tell the kitchen exactly how they wanted it. I’d let my manager know and check back sooner than usual. I want them to leave remembering how we fixed it, not the mistake.”
Upselling: “I suggest rather than sell. If someone orders the burger, I might say, ‘The sweet potato fries are great with that.’ I recommend what I genuinely like and read the table: a family on a budget gets a different approach from a birthday dinner.”
First-time server: “I haven’t served before, but I worked the counter at a busy ice cream shop for two summers. I took orders in long lines, remembered regulars and restocked between rushes. I’m quick on my feet and I want to learn your menu inside out.”
Each question and the manager’s real concern
| Question | Manager’s real concern | How to start |
|---|---|---|
| Five tables at once | Can you stay organized? | “I’d greet everyone first, then…” |
| An angry guest | Will you make it better or worse? | “I’d apologize and fix it quickly…” |
| Tell me about upselling | Can you raise checks without annoying guests? | “I suggest what I genuinely like…” |
| Why here? | Did you look at our restaurant? | “I came in last week and noticed…” |
A practice week for servers
- Day 1: Read the menu and describe three dishes in one sentence each.
- Day 2: Write answers to the nine questions, under 70 words each.
- Day 3: Act out the overcooked-steak scenario with a friend.
- Day 4: Run an AI mock interview using the restaurant’s job ad.
- Day 5: Visit the restaurant if you can and watch how the team works.
- Day 6: Run a second mock interview and improve your weakest answer.
- Day 7: Confirm your availability and set out neat clothes and non-slip shoes in case of a trial shift.

Frequently asked questions
How do I answer server interview questions with no experience?
Point to fast, people-facing work such as retail, fast food, events or volunteering, and show you can multitask, stay friendly and learn quickly. Say you are ready to learn the menu and systems. Many restaurants train new servers when the attitude is right.
What is a trial shift at a restaurant?
Some restaurants ask candidates to work a short shift, or part of one, shadowing a server so both sides can see if it is a good fit. Ask whether it is paid and what to wear. Practices differ by restaurant and country.
What should I say when asked about upselling?
Describe suggesting items you genuinely like, matched to the guest, rather than pushing the most expensive option. Give a short example, such as a side or dessert that fits their order, and say you read the table first.
What should I wear to a restaurant server interview?
Wear clean clothes that match the restaurant’s style, a little smarter than its uniform, plus comfortable closed non-slip shoes in case you are asked to shadow a shift. Keep hair tidy and skip strong perfume.
