Two routes in
- Campus recruiting, where the pipeline runs through university events and often compresses several rounds into a single day.
- The standard application, where you apply online and move through screens at a more normal pace.
The campus route is faster and the compression is real - candidates sometimes complete most of a loop in an afternoon. If your university is in the programme, it is usually the better door, because volume per interviewer is lower and the timeline is shorter.
The stages
| Stage | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Online assessment | Timed coding, where used | Not universal; varies by role and season |
| Phone or campus screen | 30-45 min, coding plus discussion | Conversational in tone |
| The loop | 3-4 rounds | Coding, design discussion, behavioral |
| As-appropriate round | An additional senior conversation | Does not always happen; not inherently a bad sign |
Why conversational changes the preparation
Microsoft interviewers tend to treat the problem as a shared exercise rather than an exam. They will hint, ask what you are thinking, and respond to your reasoning. Candidates who have only practised solving problems alone, in silence, perform worse than their raw ability predicts - not because they are judged harshly, but because they do not use what is on offer.
- Think out loud continuously. The interviewer is listening for the reasoning, and in this format they will help if you are audibly close.
- Take the hint. An offered hint is not a penalty; ignoring one because you want to solve it unaided reads as poor collaboration.
- Ask real questions about the problem rather than performing the clarification ritual.
- Expect to be asked why, repeatedly - why that data structure, why that trade-off. Have reasons, not just working code.
The technical content
Conventional data structures and algorithms at medium difficulty: arrays and strings, hash maps, linked lists, trees and graphs, recursion, and entry-level dynamic programming. Microsoft asks linked-list and string-manipulation problems somewhat more often than peers who lean graph-heavy. The Blind 75 covers the range, with the company's question history in Microsoft coding interview questions and the loop structure in Microsoft interview process and loops.
There is usually a light design discussion even at new grad level - model a system, sketch the components. It is testing whether you can structure an unfamiliar problem, not whether you know distributed systems.
The behavioral half
Less rigidly scored than Amazon's, but genuinely weighted. Expect questions about a project you are proud of, a time you disagreed with a teammate, something you learned quickly, and what you do when stuck. Build them from real work in STAR form and keep each under two minutes.
One honest caveat: Microsoft's process varies considerably by organisation and hiring season, and the as-appropriate round in particular is inconsistently applied. Treat your recruiter's description as authoritative.
Where CoPilot Interview fits
Disclosure: we build an interview assistant, so treat this as a disclosed pitch. CoPilot Interview is a native Windows and macOS app that puts suggested answers on your own screen in about four seconds, across coding, system design and behavioral rounds, with a permanent free tier that needs no credit card.
Frequently asked questions
How many rounds is the Microsoft new grad interview?
Usually a phone or campus screen followed by a loop of three to four rounds covering coding, a light design discussion and behavioral questions. An additional senior conversation sometimes happens, and it is not inherently a bad sign.
Is the Microsoft interview easier than Google or Amazon?
The problems are not easier, but the rounds are more conversational - interviewers hint, ask what you are thinking and respond to your reasoning. That rewards candidates who practise talking through problems rather than solving them silently.
What is the as-appropriate round at Microsoft?
An additional conversation with a more senior interviewer that sometimes follows the main loop. It is applied inconsistently across organisations and does not by itself indicate that the earlier rounds went badly.
Does Microsoft ask system design questions to new grads?
Often a light one - model a system or sketch the components of something familiar. It tests whether you can structure an unfamiliar problem rather than whether you know distributed systems, so a clear approach matters more than vocabulary.
