The micro1 AI interview is a spoken, real-time interview with Zara, micro1's AI recruiter. micro1 says Zara asks open-ended questions tailored to the skills a role requires, you answer out loud as you would with a person, and the session is recorded so human recruiters can review it. It runs 20 to 40 minutes depending on how many skills are assessed, at around 7 minutes per skill. Every micro1 fact below comes from micro1's own interview guide, expert library and knowledge base, checked in October 2026.
You can meet Zara in two ways: by applying to micro1's own expert and AI-training roles through its Opportunities Portal, or through another company that uses Zara for its hiring and configures the interview itself. Either way, take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand.
How the micro1 AI interview works
| Detail | What micro1 says |
|---|---|
| Interviewer | Zara, micro1's AI recruiter, interviews every candidate applying to roles on the platform. |
| Questions | Tailored to the role's predefined skills, which recruiters set from the client's requirements. micro1 says no two candidates receive the same questions and Zara adapts to your background. |
| Format | Real time and spoken, available on demand, so you can take it whenever suits you. The session is recorded for human recruiters. |
| Length | 20 to 40 minutes, about 7 minutes per skill evaluated. |
| Question types | Open-ended technical questions for your role, scenario-based questions, a coding challenge for technical roles and a human data exercise for annotator roles. |
| Result | A real-time result showing whether you meet micro1's certification criteria, with the option to request feedback if you don't. |
| Reuse | Skills certified in interviews completed after July 2025 carry over. A later application may skip skills you have certified ("Partial interview") or skip the interview entirely ("Fast-Track"). |
micro1's AI interview guide gives three preparation steps: choose one core skill or job type to be evaluated on, use its free Interview Prep tool to simulate an interview first, and optionally prepare questions in advance that showcase your expertise.
The question types, and how to answer each
Open-ended technical questions
micro1's published examples for full-stack developers are deep "explain the trade-offs" prompts, such as comparing microservices, monoliths and serverless, or diagnosing an intermittent latency problem across several services. They reward reasoning, not recall. A structure that works: define the problem in a sentence, lay out two or three options, compare them on the dimensions that matter (cost, scale, failure modes, team effort), say what you would choose and when you would choose differently, then give one real example from your work.
Scenario and soft-skill questions
Zara also asks scenario-based questions about judgment and communication, in the style of handling a disagreement with a teammate or deciding under uncertainty. Use STAR for anything about the past: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Our STAR examples show the shape, and the free STAR story builder helps you draft six to eight stories before the interview.
Coding exercise
micro1's knowledge base describes a timed exercise of up to 25 minutes in a simple browser-based editor where you write, edit and run your code. Listed languages are C, C++, C#, Go, Java, JavaScript, PHP, Python, Ruby, Rust, Swift and TypeScript. Practice in a plain editor without autocomplete, in the language you will choose, against a 25-minute timer. Our core LeetCode patterns guide is a good map of what to drill.
Human data (annotation) exercise
For annotator and AI-training roles, the exercise asks you to evaluate AI-generated responses against instructions: identify errors, suggest improvements or confirm correctness. To practice, take an AI answer in your own field and write a short critique against four checks: factual accuracy, completeness, quality of reasoning and whether it followed the instructions. Say exactly what is wrong and why.
What Zara rates
| Area | What micro1 says is assessed | Rating scale |
|---|---|---|
| Role skills | A dynamic conversation per skill, with follow-ups based on your answers | Not Experienced, Junior, Experienced, Senior |
| Custom questions | Scripted questions read word for word; you get one opportunity to answer each | Not Impressive, Average, Good |
| Soft skills (every interview) | Critical thinking, empathy and active listening, communication clarity, adaptability and composure | Average, Good, Excellent |
| Language proficiency | Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency, conciseness and structure, in the interview's language | Average, Good, Excellent |
Three details from the knowledge base matter for how you speak. Custom questions give you one opportunity, so answer completely the first time. Languages can't be mixed within an interview, and switching to a second language may count against your score. And transcript accuracy depends on your speech clarity and audio quality, so background noise can hurt how your answers are captured. If English isn't your first language, our tips for non-native speakers apply directly.
When a company uses Zara for its own hiring
Employers build their own Zara interviews, so the format depends on what they chose. The knowledge base lists these types:
| Interview type | What it can include |
|---|---|
| Standard | Up to 5 skills, up to 10 custom questions and an optional typed or audio exercise |
| Based on résumé | Zara tailors the interview to your résumé; up to 20 custom questions and an optional coding exercise |
| Software engineer full | Up to 5 skills, up to 10 custom questions and an optional coding exercise |
| Human data | Up to 5 skills, up to 10 custom questions and a required data annotation exercise |
| Single-focus formats | Custom questions only, a coding exercise only, or one custom exercise only |
Employer interviews add time per block: about 5 minutes per skill, 1 to 4 minutes per custom question, up to 5 minutes for your own questions about the company, which Zara can answer, and up to 25 minutes for a coding exercise. Read your invitation closely, because employers can insert the interview's duration, type and skill list into it. That list is your study guide.
Employers can also turn on proctoring. When it is on, micro1 says you must share your entire screen, keep your webcam on throughout and use a single monitor. If the employer enforces it, adding a second monitor, ending screen sharing or turning off the webcam suspends the interview until you undo the change. Set up with one display before you click start.
Setup and troubleshooting
- Device: a laptop, desktop or mobile phone (iOS or Android), with at least 8 GB of RAM and 4 vCPUs.
- Connection: stable 4G or faster.
- Browser: Google Chrome, or the latest Safari. micro1 advises against Incognito or private mode and against Firefox and Brave.
- Permissions: allow camera, microphone and screen sharing, then run micro1's system check before the interview.
- Room: quiet and well lit. Close unnecessary apps and tabs, keep your camera centered and speak clearly.
If something breaks mid-interview, click the "Having Trouble?" button in the bottom-right corner for camera, microphone and connection fixes. If that doesn't solve it, email help@micro1.ai with your full name, the email you applied with, the role and a screenshot or description. micro1's candidate troubleshooting page says support is by email only and replies within 24 hours, Monday to Friday.
After the interview: statuses, feedback and ID checks
- Under review: recruiters are reviewing your interview, which can take up to 48 hours.
- Did not qualify: you can request detailed feedback from the Talent Dashboard. It arrives by email with what went well and what to improve.
- Hiring manager reviewing: you did well and your profile is in human review. It doesn't guarantee placement and can take up to 30 days.
- Certification and ID: after you meet the criteria, you complete your profile and verify your identity through a third-party provider with an unexpired passport, driver's license or national ID scanned from the original, plus a selfie.
- Official emails: micro1 says its emails come from @micro1.ai, @micro1.io or @micro1.co, a useful check against fake recruiter messages.

A 7-day prep plan for the micro1 interview
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Pick one core skill or job type, as micro1 advises. List the role's skills and map two stories or examples to each. |
| 2 | Take micro1's free Interview Prep practice interview for your role and note what surprised you. |
| 3 | Run a scored mock in CoPilot Interview built from your résumé and the role description, with the focus set to your main skill. |
| 4 | Trade-off drills: answer three "compare and choose" technical questions out loud in two minutes each. |
| 5 | Coding roles: one 25-minute problem in a plain editor. Annotation roles: critique three AI answers in your field. |
| 6 | A second mock aimed at your lowest score, plus a recording check of your audio. |
| 7 | System check on your real device, then rest. Take the interview when you're fresh. |
For day 3, CoPilot Interview's desktop Mock Interview builds the interview from your résumé and a job description. You choose the level, 3, 5 or 8 questions, the mix (behavioral, technical, system design, coding), your coding language and an optional focus. It reads each question aloud, listens to your spoken answer and scores it out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer, then gives you a report card. With nothing to install, the browser AI mock interview has 113 real questions across 9 tracks, including data science and ML.
