A Mercer Mettl assessment is an online test that an employer or institution delivers on the Mercer | Mettl platform, usually a mix of aptitude (cognitive) questions, coding problems, and personality or skills questions. Most are proctored: you pass a system check, allow your webcam and microphone, capture a photo of your face and your ID, and work in a full-screen window where switching tabs can lead to a warning or disqualification.
The best preparation is to run the system compatibility check and mock test a day or two early, practice timed aptitude and coding questions, and learn the test-day rules before you start. The platform details below come from Mercer | Mettl's own product pages and support articles, checked as of October 2026. The employer configures your specific test, so your invitation email is the final word.
What is a Mercer Mettl assessment?
Mercer | Mettl is the assessment business of Mercer, used for hiring, campus recruitment and exams. Employers build a test from its catalog or their own questions, so the content varies widely. These are the formats you're most likely to see:
| Test type | Mettl's published format (as of October 2026) | What it checks |
|---|---|---|
| Cognitive Ability Test | 44 questions in 60 minutes, rated moderate difficulty | Critical thinking and abstract reasoning; Mettl describes it as covering perception, memory, reasoning, problem-solving and verbal skills. |
| Coding assessment | 2 coding problems in 40 minutes in a back-end coding simulator | Real coding skill, basics and object-oriented programming |
| Separate aptitude tests | Numerical, verbal, abstract reasoning and critical thinking tests; length varies by test and region | Specific reasoning skills |
| Personality and behavioral tests | Listed in Mettl's catalog; length varies | Work style and preferences; there are no right answers to cram |
| Role-based technical tests | Built per role (front-end, back-end, database, full-stack and more) | Job-specific knowledge |
The figures for the first two rows come from Mettl's Cognitive Ability Test page and its coding assessment page. Your test may be a different version, so check the section list and timers on the instructions screen.
What happens on test day, step by step?
Mettl's support article on attempting a proctored test describes the flow:
- Open the invitation. It comes from admin.mettl@mercer.com, so check your spam folder. You can also start from an assessment link, or enter an 8 to 12 character invitation key at tests.mettl.com.
- Check system compatibility. A system check also runs automatically before the test.
- Allow camera and microphone access when the browser asks.
- Allow full-screen capture. Proctored tests ask you to select your entire display when prompted.
- Register and accept the terms.
- Capture your face and your ID. You can retake either photo before submitting.
- Choose a section and start. You read a consent message about the monitored session, then the test opens in full-screen mode.
- Finish. Clicking Finish Test shows a summary of attempted, unattempted and marked questions. Choosing Yes, End Test submits, and you can't change answers after that.
Technical requirements
- Computer: a laptop or desktop with a webcam and microphone. Mettl says its proctored assessments are not supported on mobile devices.
- Browser: Mettl's candidate guide lists Chrome 63 and above or Firefox 52 and above, with pop-ups allowed for tests.mettl.com.
- Internet: at least 512 kbps without interruption for browser-based proctored tests. The Mettl Secure Browser article asks for 1 Mbps.
- Mettl Secure Browser: some tests require it. It has Windows and macOS installers, closes running applications before the test starts, and launches from the test link rather than by double-clicking it.
How is a Mercer Mettl test proctored?
As of October 2026, Mettl's proctoring page lists three main modes, and the employer chooses one:
| Mode | How it works | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Live proctoring | A human proctor watches in real time through your video feed. | A person can see you throughout the test. |
| Recorded proctoring | AI monitors the session and human proctors review the recording afterward. | Flags are checked by a person after the test. |
| Advanced (AI-only) proctoring | AI flags unusual activity and scores the session's integrity without a human. | Keep your face in frame and stay in the test window. |
Mettl also produces a Credibility Index report that logs each flagged event and how long it lasted, and its Secure Browser runs in a lockdown kiosk mode that limits you to the test screen. Identity checks can include email authentication, a one-time code sent to your phone and an official ID.
The rules that trip people up
- Turn off all notifications before you start, as Mettl's support article instructs.
- Don't switch windows or tabs. Mettl says this may lead to a warning or disqualification.
- Don't refresh the page. Mettl says a refresh leads to immediate submission of your responses.
- Don't panic if you disconnect. Mettl says responses are saved automatically, so you can resume after a disconnection or shutdown.
Take the assessment yourself and follow the employer's rules — use CoPilot Interview to practice beforehand.
How does the Mettl coding simulator work?
Mettl's support article on its back-end programming environment explains the coding experience:
- Languages: you can choose from more than 30 and switch languages in the middle of the assessment.
- Compile and Test runs your code against default test cases and lists compile errors with a link to each line. Code compiles for a maximum of 30 seconds.
- Custom input lets you debug with your own data.
- Submit Code runs against all the weighted test cases. You can edit and resubmit as often as you like, and a code history shows earlier versions.
- Scoring: each test case carries a grade, and your score for the question is the sum of the grades for the cases you pass.
That last point matters. Because each passing case earns points, a correct solution for most inputs is worth submitting even if you can't finish the optimal version. Submit a working version early, then improve it.
How should you prepare for a Mercer Mettl assessment?
This is our suggested one-week plan. Shorten it if your test is only aptitude or only coding.
| Day | Focus | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read the invitation | List the sections, timers, proctoring mode and any Secure Browser requirement. Ask the recruiter about anything unclear. |
| 2 | Aptitude: numbers and words | Timed sets of numerical and verbal reasoning. At 44 questions in 60 minutes, you have about 80 seconds per question, so practice skipping and returning. |
| 3 | Aptitude: patterns | Abstract reasoning and critical thinking sets. Note which question types cost you the most time. |
| 4 | Coding | Two medium problems in 40 minutes in a browser editor. Use your own test inputs before submitting. |
| 5 | Coding review | Re-solve the problem you found hardest. Review edge cases and complexity with the Big-O complexity visualizer. |
| 6 | System check and mock test | Run the compatibility check and Mettl's mock test on the exact computer, browser and network you'll use. |
| 7 | Set up | Prepare your ID, a quiet room with good light, a charged laptop on power, and notifications off. |
Prepare for the interview after the test
A good Mettl score usually leads to an interview where you explain your thinking out loud. CoPilot Interview's Mock Interview builds questions from your résumé and the job description, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what to fix and a model answer. You can mix behavioral, technical and coding questions, and coding questions never auto-submit. There's also a free AI mock interview in your browser with 113 questions across 9 tracks, and a coding interview cheat sheet for revision.
Navigating the test window
- Two timers: the overall assessment time sits at the top right, with a separate timer for the section.
- Question palette: colors show status, including questions marked to revisit, attempted and unattempted. Mark hard questions and come back.
- Sections: a drop-down switches sections. A locked section can't be edited again, so lock it only when you're done.
- Calculator: a floating calculator is available for some assessment types. If yours has one, practice without leaning on it for simple arithmetic.
- Instructions: a button at the top left reopens them at any time.
Common Mercer Mettl mistakes
- Skipping the mock test. Camera, browser or pop-up problems are much easier to fix the day before.
- Refreshing when the page stalls. A refresh can submit your answers. Wait for the connection to recover, and contact the test administrator or Mettl support if it doesn't.
- Leaving notifications or apps open. Pop-ups and background apps cause flags and Secure Browser prompts.
- Spending too long on one aptitude question. Mark it, move on and come back if time allows.
- Waiting for a perfect coding solution. Partial test-case credit means a working submission beats a blank one.
