A McDonald's crew member interview is usually a quick, friendly chat with a restaurant manager after you apply online, and candidates commonly report that some locations add a short online questionnaire first. Many McDonald's restaurants are owned and run by independent franchisees, so the process varies by owner, role and location.
For many people this is a first job interview. The McDonald's interview questions below come with sample answers written for teens and first-time workers.
Who you are really interviewing with
At a franchised restaurant, the manager across the table works for the local owner, not directly for the corporate office. That is why two restaurants a few miles apart can ask different questions, schedule interviews differently or move at different speeds. Read the posting for the exact restaurant you applied to, and check McDonald's own careers pages for current steps and values.
What stays the same almost everywhere: managers want people who show up, stay polite during a rush and follow food safety steps.
McDonald's interview questions for crew members
“Why do you want to work at McDonald's?”
“I'm saving for my first car, and I want a job where I learn to work fast and with a team. My friend works here and says the shift leaders train you properly. I'm 16, I live ten minutes away, and I can walk here after school.”
“Front counter, drive-thru or kitchen: which would you prefer?”
“I'm happy to start wherever you need me most. I think I'd enjoy the front counter because I like talking to people, but I'd also like to learn the kitchen so I can cover different spots when someone calls out.”
“A customer says their order is missing an item. What do you do?”
“I'd say sorry, check the receipt to see what's missing and get it to them as fast as I can. I wouldn't argue about whose fault it was. If they were still upset, I'd ask my shift manager to help.”
Shift roles: “A crew member is skipping a food safety step. What do you do?”
“I'd stop it right away, kindly, because food safety isn't optional. I'd show them the correct step and ask why they skipped it, since they might have been rushed or never trained properly. Then I'd tell the manager so it can be covered in training.”
Fitting a job around school
Managers ask about availability in almost every interview, and they listen for honesty. Give the hours you can actually work, including weekends and holidays, and mention sports or exams that will change your schedule. Work-hour limits for young workers are set by law and differ by state and country, so ask the manager if you are unsure; this is not legal advice.
Our guide to answering the availability question has wording for students, and our first job interview guide covers what to say when you have no work history.

What to bring and wear
Bring a photo ID if you have one, your school schedule, and a parent's or teacher's phone number as a reference. A resume helps but is often not required for crew roles. Wear clean, simple clothes, such as plain pants and a neat shirt, and closed shoes. Turn your phone to silent before you walk in.
Getting practice reps with CoPilot Interview

Practice the five table questions until each feels natural.
Almost every McDonald's interview is in person, so use the app to prepare, not in the room. For video interviews it can work as an AI interview assistant only where that is allowed, so follow your employer's rules. Frequently asked questions
How old do you have to be to work at McDonald's?
It depends on the restaurant owner and on the work-hour laws where you live, which set different rules for younger workers. Check the posting or ask the restaurant directly. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do I need a resume for a McDonald's crew interview?
Often not for crew roles, but bringing a short one-page list of school activities, volunteering and references looks prepared. It also helps you remember examples when the manager asks about teamwork or responsibility.
Can McDonald's hire you on the spot?
Some candidates report getting an offer at the end of the interview, while others wait for a call. It varies by restaurant, owner and how urgently they need staff. Either way, thank the manager and ask when you should expect to hear back.
Why do McDonald's interviews differ between restaurants?
Many McDonald's restaurants are run by independent franchisees who make their own hiring decisions. So the number of steps, the questions and the timing can differ, even between restaurants in the same town.
