A leasing consultant interview is mostly a sales interview set in an apartment community. Hiring managers want to see that you can give a warm tour, follow up without being pushy, handle objections about price or space and close a lease, while treating every prospect the same under fair housing rules. Many community managers also ask you to "lease them" an apartment on the spot.

The mock tour: "Thanks for coming in. Before we walk, what's bringing you to the area, and what matters most in your next home? ... You mentioned you work from home, so let's start with the two-bedroom on the courtyard side. It's the quietest, and the second bedroom fits a desk by the window."

Price objection: "That's fair to compare. Our rent includes water and parking, which many renters forget to add. You also said a short commute matters, and we're ten minutes from your office. Is that worth the difference to you? If not, I understand, and I'm happy to stay in touch."

Silent prospect: "I'd send a short message the next day that mentions something from the tour, like the dog park for their beagle, and one clear next step. After two more polite tries with no reply, I note it in the system and move on."

No leasing experience: "I've worked a year at a phone store, where I listened, matched people with the right plan and handled 'I need to think about it.' I hit my monthly target in eight of twelve months. An apartment is a bigger decision, but the skill is the same: find what matters, then show how this fits."

Frequently asked questions

What is a mock tour in a leasing consultant interview?

The manager plays a prospect and asks you to show them an apartment or the community. They watch whether you ask questions first, connect features to the prospect's needs and ask for the application at the end.

Do leasing consultants need a license?

It depends on where you work; some places require a license for certain leasing activities and many apartment leasing jobs do not. Check the posting and your local rules. This is not legal advice.

What should I wear to a leasing consultant interview?

Business casual is standard: a collared shirt or blouse, clean trousers or a skirt, and comfortable closed shoes, because you may walk the property during a mock tour.

How do I show sales ability without sales experience?

Use any time you persuaded, recommended or upsold: retail, restaurants, fundraising or student clubs. Give one number, such as a target you hit, and describe how you handled a customer who hesitated.
