Kroger and its family of grocery stores usually hire hourly workers through an online application followed by a short, friendly interview with a store or department manager, and some roles add an online assessment. That is how candidates commonly report it, but it varies by role, store name and location.
Below are Kroger interview questions for cashier, stocker, deli, bakery and pickup roles, each with a sample answer for a first-time or entry-level candidate.
Kroger and its family of stores
Kroger runs grocery stores under several names, such as Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Fry's and Harris Teeter, and many of their job applications run through Kroger's careers site. So you might apply to “Kroger” and interview at a store with a different sign. The questions are similar across the family, but steps and timing differ by store and region. Read Kroger's own careers pages for current steps and values.
Kroger interview questions by department
Cashier: “How would you handle a customer who is short on money at checkout?”
“I'd keep it quiet and kind, and ask which items they'd like to put back. I wouldn't sigh or make it awkward, because it happens to everyone. Once it's sorted, I'd thank them and keep the line moving.”
Stocker: “How do you decide what to stock first?”
“I'd ask my lead what matters most for that shift, then start with empty spots on popular items and anything that needs to stay cold. I'd rotate older dates to the front so nothing expires on the shelf.”
Deli: “A customer asks for a very specific slice thickness during a rush. What do you do?”
“I'd slice one piece and show them before cutting the whole order, so it's right the first time. Taking ten extra seconds is faster than redoing a pound of turkey. I'd smile and keep the next customer informed.”
Bakery: “Are you comfortable with early starts and following recipes exactly?”
“Yes. I bake for my family most weekends and I measure carefully, because guessing ruins bread. I'm a morning person and I'm already up at 5 for my brother's school run, so a 5 a.m. start works for me.”
Pickup: “How would you handle an item that's out of stock?”
“I'd follow the store's substitution steps and pick the closest match the customer allows. If they said no substitutions, I'd leave it out and make sure the order notes are accurate, so nobody gets a surprise at the car.”
How to talk about food safety and cleanliness
Deli, bakery and pickup managers often ask how you keep food safe. You do not need technical knowledge. Say you would follow the store's training exactly, wash your hands and change gloves when the task changes, keep your station clean and ask when unsure. Never claim certifications you do not have.

What to prepare for a short in-store interview
Bring a photo ID, your weekly availability on paper and a list of past jobs, school activities or volunteering with dates. Wear clean, simple clothes and closed shoes. Arrive early and ask for the manager by name at the customer service desk.
CoPilot Interview as a practice tool
Grocery interviews are short, so every answer counts. In our AI mock interviews, you paste the posting and your resume, an AI interviewer asks questions out loud, and each spoken answer gets a score out of 10 with what worked, what to improve and a model answer. That is on the free plan, which also includes 15 minutes of live help a day.
Live help, where our app works as an AI interview assistant on a video call, is only for interviews where it is allowed, so follow your employer's rules. For an in-store interview, use it to prepare beforehand. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Ralphs or Fred Meyer interview the same as a Kroger interview?
These stores are part of the Kroger family, so questions are often similar: availability, customer service and teamwork. Steps and timing can still differ by store and region, so read the specific posting and follow its instructions.
Does Kroger have an online assessment?
Some Kroger postings include an online assessment and some do not, and the application will tell you. Answer honestly and consistently. The questions usually ask how you would act at work, not test knowledge.
Which Kroger department is easiest to get hired in?
It depends on what the store needs that week. Saying you are open to more than one department, such as front end and pickup, can help, as long as you are honest about the work you would enjoy and the hours you can cover.
What should I wear to a Kroger interview?
Clean, simple clothes a step neater than everyday wear, such as plain pants and a collared shirt or neat top, with closed shoes. For deli or bakery roles, tidy hair and short, clean nails make a good impression.
