Early childhood and daycare teacher interviews ask how you manage a room of two- to five-year-olds with warmth and structure, how you handle biting, tantrums and separation anxiety, how you plan developmentally appropriate activities, and how you communicate with parents who want to know everything. Expect a classroom observation or a demonstration lesson for many roles. The K-12 question set is in teacher interview questions, and the support-role version in teacher assistant interview questions. This page gives 10 questions with what a strong answer contains, 3 sample answers you can adapt, a table of the rounds to expect, and a practice plan for the week before.
What the interview looks like
| Round | What happens | Prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Director screen | Credentials (CDA, ECE units, degree), age groups, ratios, availability, background check | Credentials and age groups with dates |
| Director and lead teacher interview | Classroom management, curriculum, parent communication, safety, behavioral | Scenario answers with the child's development in mind |
| Classroom observation or demo | You lead a circle time or activity with real children | A 15-minute activity you have run before |
Early childhood teacher interview questions and what strong answers contain

- How do you handle a child who bites? Immediate calm response, attend to the bitten child, redirect, look for the pattern and cause, communicate with both families, document.

- How do you plan activities that are developmentally appropriate? Observation, learning goals, play-based activities, differentiation for the range in the room.
- A parent is upset that their child had an accident or a scratch. Listen, explain what happened and what you did, how you will prevent it, follow up.
- How do you support a child with separation anxiety? Predictable goodbye routine, a comfort object, engagement, honest communication with the parent.
- How do you handle a tantrum in front of other children? Safety first, calm presence, name the feeling, wait, reconnect, do not shame.
- What does a typical day look like in your classroom? Arrival, free play, circle, activity, outdoor, meals, rest, with the why for each.
- How do you communicate with families? Daily notes or app, photos, conferences, early contact about concerns.
- Tell me about a child who was hard to reach and what worked. Observation, trying approaches, what changed.
Sample answers
How do you handle a child who bites?
I go to the bitten child first, comfort them and check the skin, while staying calm with the biter: 'Biting hurts. You wanted the truck. You can say my turn.' Then I look for the pattern, because biting at this age usually means teething, frustration or crowding at a particular time of day. I adjust the environment, tell both families the same day without naming the other child, and document it.
How do you support a child with separation anxiety?
I ask the parent to keep the goodbye short and the same every day, a hug, a phrase, a wave at the window. I have something ready that the child likes so there is a reason to come in, and I stay close for the first minutes. I tell the parent honestly how long the crying lasted, because it is usually much shorter than they fear, and that honesty builds trust fast.
A parent is upset about a scratch.
I take it seriously even when it is small. I explain exactly what happened, what I did at the time, and what I am changing so it is less likely to happen again. Then I check in the next day. Parents forgive accidents; they do not forgive feeling brushed off.
Mistakes to avoid
- Describing discipline in terms of punishment or time-outs without reconnection.
- Activities with no developmental purpose behind them.
- Vague answers about parent communication.
- Sounding as though you tolerate children rather than enjoy them.
A practice plan for the week before
- Prepare a 15-minute activity you have run successfully, with materials, in case of a demonstration.
- Write stories for biting, a tantrum, separation anxiety, an upset parent and a hard-to-reach child.
- Run a mock interview from the posting and answer aloud; keep the child's development visible in every answer.
- Review the center's curriculum approach (play-based, Montessori, Reggio, HighScope) and be ready to say how you fit; role-specific preparation is in AI interview help for teachers.
- Prepare questions about ratios, planning time and staff turnover.
