An AI interview assistant like CoPilot Interview does not record the interview the way a meeting recorder does. The interviewer's voice is streamed in short encrypted segments through CoPilot Interview's proxy to a speech-to-text model, turned into caption text, and not stored on CoPilot Interview's servers. The question text goes to the AI model you picked, and the answer comes back to your screen; those are not stored on the servers either. What the app keeps is a set of session files, the transcript, the answers and the interview report, saved in the Documents folder on your own computer. No video is captured at all. This page lays out each piece of data, where it goes, how long it exists, and the one legal matter you should handle yourself.
Recording versus transcribing
The word "record" usually means keeping an audio or video file you can play back later. That is not what happens here. The app listens to what your meeting app plays, sends that audio in short segments for transcription, and works from the text. There is no audio file among the session files and no playback of the interviewer's voice afterward. The idle pause, which stops the app listening after 10 minutes with no voice, is sometimes described as stopping "recording," but what stops is the live audio stream to the speech-to-text model.
The distinction matters for two reasons. Practically, text is what you can actually use: you can search a transcript, reread the questions, and feed the report into your preparation. Audio you would never listen to. And on privacy, text is smaller, local, and under your control, which is where most people want their interview data to be.
What is sent, what is stored, and where
| Data | Leaves your computer? | Kept on CoPilot Interview's servers? | Kept on your computer? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interviewer's voice (meeting app audio) | Yes, in short encrypted segments to the speech-to-text model via the proxy | No | No audio file |
| Caption text (the transcript) | Returned to your screen | No | Yes, in the session transcript in Documents |
| Question text | Yes, to the AI model you picked | No | Part of the transcript |
| Answers | Returned to your screen | No | Yes, in the session files |
| Interview report (📊 Summary) | Generated after the session | No | Yes, in Documents |
| Your own voice (your microphone) | Yes, mixed with the interviewer's audio and streamed the same way for transcription, unless you use Mute mic | No | No audio file; your words are part of the transcript |
| Video of you or the interviewer | Never captured | No | No |
| Screen captures (Read screen, Pin screen) | Yes, sent to the AI model to answer what is shown, only when you press Ctrl+Shift+S or pin | No | The resulting answer is in the session |
| Anonymous question statistics | Optional: titles, categories, scores | Only if left on | n/a |
Two rows deserve comment. In Candidate Mode, the app captures two sources and mixes them: the computer's audio, which carries the interviewer, and your microphone, which carries your own answers. Both are transcribed, which is how the 📊 Summary report can score what you actually said; a Mute mic toggle keeps only the interviewer's audio if you prefer. And Read screen only captures when you ask it to, by pressing Ctrl+Shift+S (⌘+Shift+S on Mac) or pinning a region; nothing is captured from your screen otherwise.
The session files in your Documents folder
After a session, the app writes the transcript, the answers that were generated, and the interview report to your Documents folder. The report lists every question asked with its category and difficulty, a scorecard, the questions a next round is likely to ask, areas to improve with a practice drill for each, and your strengths. These files are yours: you can read them, copy them into your notes, or delete them. They are not synced anywhere by the app. If your Documents folder is itself backed up to a cloud service by your operating system, that is your backup, not ours, and you control it.
This is also the reason to run the app on your own computer rather than a shared or company one, since the transcript of your interview and anything you pasted in, including your résumé and the job description, live in that folder.
The anonymous statistics option
Separately from sessions, the app can send anonymous question statistics: question titles, categories and scores. It never sends answers, transcripts, résumés or contact details as part of this. The purpose is to understand which question types people face. If you would rather send nothing, turn the option off in Options; the app works identically either way. The security page describes the handling in full and is the place to check for any changes after version 1.3.16.
Consent laws are a separate question
Many places regulate recording a conversation, and the rules differ by country and by state: some require that one party consent, some require all parties. This page cannot tell you which applies to you, and we do not give legal advice. What we can say is how the app's behavior relates to the question. The real-time interview copilot does not save an audio recording of the call. It transcribes audio in short segments for the purpose of showing you captions and does keep a text transcript on your computer.
If you make any recording of your own, for example using a meeting app's record button, a phone, or any other tool, that is your recording and the consent rules for your jurisdiction apply to it. Check them before you press record. If an employer records the interview, their consent notice covers their recording, not anything you do. When in doubt about whether assistive software is welcome in a given interview, check the invitation and ask the recruiter.
What the app is not good for here
The honest limitation: if what you want is a recording you can replay, to hear your own tone or review exactly how the interviewer phrased something, a desktop AI interview assistant is the wrong tool. It keeps text, not sound: your own voice is captured through the microphone during a live call unless you mute it, but what you get afterward is a transcript of your words, never an audio file you can replay. The AI mock interview is the closer fit for self-review: it reads each question aloud, you answer out loud, and each answer is scored out of 10 with what worked, what to improve and a model answer, so you get feedback on your answers without any recording at all.
Questions to ask of any tool
If you are comparing products, the recording question comes down to four specifics that marketing pages often skip. Ask whether audio is stored on the vendor's servers and for how long. Ask whether a transcript is kept and where, local or cloud. Ask whether video is captured. And ask whether there is any telemetry, what it contains, and whether you can turn it off. You can compare AI interview assistants on these points; the right answers for most people are no stored audio, local transcript, no video, and optional telemetry. For the broader data picture, see AI interview assistant privacy.
Follow the rules of the employer or assessment you're in — many people use it only to practice, which works on the free plan.

Run a free session, then open your Documents folder. The transcript, answers and report are there; nothing else is kept anywhere.

Does CoPilot Interview save an audio file of the interview?
No. Audio is streamed in short encrypted segments to a speech-to-text model and is not stored on CoPilot Interview's servers. The session files saved to your Documents folder are the text transcript, the answers and the report; there is no audio file among them.
Is my video recorded?
No. The app never captures video of you or the interviewer. It works from the audio the meeting app plays and, only when you press Read screen or pin a region, from a capture of what is on your screen.
Where is the transcript stored?
Only in the Documents folder on the computer you ran the session on. It is not uploaded to or kept on CoPilot Interview's servers. You can read, copy or delete it like any other file.
Is my own voice transcribed during a live interview?
Yes, by default. In Candidate Mode the app captures the interviewer from the computer's audio and mixes in your microphone, so your answers are transcribed too and the Summary report can score them. Use the Mute mic toggle to capture the interviewer only. Either way, no audio file is kept; the transcript is text in your Documents folder.
Do I need the interviewer's consent to use the app?
The app does not keep an audio recording, but it does transcribe the call and save a text transcript on your computer, and recording and consent rules vary by country and state. We do not give legal advice. Check the rules where you are, especially for any recording you make yourself, and when unsure about assistive tools, check the invitation and ask the recruiter.
What are the anonymous statistics and can I turn them off?
They are question titles, categories and scores, sent anonymously to understand which question types people face. They never include answers, transcripts, résumés or contact details. You can turn them off in Options.
